Best dang boot I have ever owned. Wore them all sunmer in the heat and dust at my kids' motocross racing while camping 3 to 6 days at a time in a tent. Boot surprisingly kept my feet cool and although the terrain was hard on my feet, I felt really good and never uncomfortable wearing boots all day and into the evening. ESC is the best for hiking too, made my feet go up half a size and wider.

Sharp rocks shouldn’t be an issue as you should be more Careful with foot placement! That’s the point of barefoot shoes. The cause you to walk really carefully. As someone who actually walks barefoot every summer as much as possible including in towns and shops, you just become better at scanning ahead. What you find happens is your brain automatically registers things to be careful of and it doesn’t take looking down or conscious effort so much.
I just ordered a pair of these for work (I’m required to wear black boots) from Revivo. I’m really excited to try these out when they arrive! I do tons of hiking and I’m considering snagging a pair of these for the trails. Thank you for the review!
Cracking review, Mike...and nice to see you put some hard miles into them 👍 The lack of a toe buffer was a big issue I had with my Tracker FG's and while it's a bit disappointing they haven't sorted this with these boots, they still look the absolute business. Glad to see you back in the game, sir!

Great review Mike, I'd say it 100% matches my experience with them. Definite pros being comfort, grip and breathability/quick drying - so much nicer than getting a soaked through Gore-Tex style boot that can take days to dry out. The cons, as you mention, scuffs and battered feet on rocky trails. I think the latter is my biggest issue as most of my hiking in the Lakes is on very uneven rocky trails and my feet know all about it, there's no way to walk on such ground to avoid some rock stabbing you in the heel at some point unfortunately. When hiking in woodland, grassland, moors and tarmac though they're amazing which I guess with where they're really aimed at with the whole "forest" thing in the name! I did try my old Altbergs for the first time the other day, I felt like I'd grown 6 inches and had stuck a ton of lead on each foot, so restrictive it was crazy. I pretty much wear the Vivos as my everyday shoe now because they're so comfy. If Vivo did come up with a Mountain style boot I'm not sure how they'd be able to resolve the battered foot issue as in the barefoot ethos the soles need to be thin and flexible, here's hoping for a miracle though 😉 I have tried my FG Trails up on the limestone crags thinking that being designed for 'firm ground' they'd maybe be better but if anything they were worse. On a vague tangent I think the world needs some better barefoot sock options in general but obviously not the mental looking 5 toe jobs 🤣 I feel like most socks restrict toe spreading to some extent (my running socks are very tight around the toes for example but really help with blister protection) this obviously defeats the purpose of a wide toe box. Time for Vivo to think up something to match their shoes I think or better yet improve the shoe linings so socks aren't required at all.
Thanks Rob, for the kind words and the extensive comment. I'm also wearing Vivo's as my everyday shoe except when I run for that I have a pair of Salomon's. As you mentioned they are very comfy and I find standardised shoes fairly restrictive particularly around the toes. I've a pair of solid Zamberlan boots for winter, as you said I've experienced the same feelings. Very heavy and very restrictive, yet they offer so much protection underfoot and have excellent waterproof capabilities. Yet I have had issues with blisters in them particularly on the back of the heels but it's about the trade off I suppose. Well you never know, engineers do sometimes come up with the impossible and I live in hope that one day there will be a mountain tracker. However, as you said I also have no idea how they would be able to give more protection and yet keep the sole thin with a zero heal drop. Very interesting tangent with the socks, I never actually considered that but some better barefoot sock options would be amazing.
I had the same issue with the Trackers, trying to avoid the rocky surfaces on Lakeland trails, but after 5 months of daily dog walks, I now enjoy it like a foot massage, to the extent it makes the once edgy nigh-time walk in my Gobi`s, feel positively tame.
The five toe socks like Injinjii have always been comfy for me, however they aren't really thick enough for cold weather. It looks like they now offer a liner + thick outer combo, and the outer has a wide toe box so maybe those are worth a try?
Do you think the Forest ESC boots would these survive Patagonia in November? More worried about warmth than comfort, been on the barefoot train for 5 years. It'd be Spring time, Basically in between 5 and 15 degrees celcius
I've just ordered Tracker textile FG. They have toe cap, should be completly waterproof. I have 28.1 - 28.2cm long feet, so hopefully i didn't make mistake regarding the size i oredered, which is 45EU. What lenght is your feet? Nice review, btw!

I find the collar really stiff when I do it up for a tight fit. It is currently quite restrictive on my ankle forward movement. Does it soften up over time as you break it in or do you just not do it up tight?
Awsome review!! Need your help!! I was lucky enough to try these on in person today! They are soo comfortable but I’m in between a 43 and a 44 in sizing! The 43 is the better fit although on the tighter side and the 44 just feels to loose. Does that leather actually loosen up a bit after breakin period??? I would think so since it’s so soft?? If it does loosen up then I think I would go with the smaller size??? Please help!!
Thks for the review, had a pair of these in for repair, one eyelet had failed. Was impressed with them and was looking at getting a pair, I hunt, mainly bush hunting and was looking for a light weight boot, the grip looked great, but straight away noticed the lack of toe protection, some rubber there wouldn't be amiss. Their $400 ...still deli eating, thk again for the review, very informative
spot on about the toe cap. i received a pair of these about a month ago. i have taken them on two arduous mountain hikes. a toe cap is a must. not only for wear and tear but you can stub your toes pretty well too. also have worn them through brush and ended up with a deep gouge in the leather. The soles work well enough. i was considering gluing a rand on them for kicks.
Yeah, the toe cap is an issue but I have spoke to people that have worn them 500km+ and they are still hanging in there. Ha, did you go for that rand in the end?
Great barefoot boots. Have worn them a lot on some very long / cold / wet hikes in Scotland a few weeks ago, as well as winter hikes at home here in Eryri. Longest one was 22km with 1200m of ascent. No problems, even with some sections of really rough rocky sections. Had to be a bit more careful with foot placements, just as I would I suppose if I was actually barefoot. I like the thinish sole for the ‘feelground’ sensation, please don’t make them any thicker! Repanur wax (as recommended by Vivobarefoot) makes them waterproof enough for me. Breathability is very good. Only issue for me is catching the toe on steeper rocky ground. Never any foot pain at all, just scuffing on the leather. So far, the wax makes them look ‘as new’. But not sure how long they will last before holes will appear. Some sort of rubber toe rand raising might be an option? In response to Mike’s review, they work fine for me on rocky mountains 😉
Strengthening your ankles is the other side of no ankle support. It's a plus or a minus, depending on your perspective. I've watched several of these reviews and I'm still wondering if these are suitable for backpacking with heavy loads (40-50 pounds). I'm a fan of barefoot shoes, but as a serious hiking boot, I'm still skeptical.
How are they holding up? I wish they did a fg tracker upper (waterproof and not hot) with a ESC tread for grip. These boots look great but they seem hot and a faff to keep having to treat them
Have they updated the durability, I have owned two pairs of FG trackers for the last 6 years and they never last as long as I would like. Usually you will see the sole seperate from the top slightly within the first few months ruining any water proofing, by about 8 months the sole is worn down flat or has holes. Been waiting for them to use something more durable for a while.
The durability has been quite good thus far but I haven't been using them as much over the winter. I have had reports from others how have tested them longer than me and they are holding well for them.
I just got these in the mail today. Wore them all day. Loving them so far. Hope they hold up well. I'm planning to work, hike, and live in these full time. They were running a good sale on their website the past week. $210. Thanks for your video. Oh also I didn't get any of the leather balm in my package. Maybe they don't do that anymore.
187 miles DNF at Moab 240. I loved them. Leather treated them when I got home and I'll keep using them. Only bashed my toe twice the whole time and the tread saved me. Pick your feet up and you got nothing to worry about. 10/10
Hey Mike, first of all, thanks for the review. I'm using Vibram FiveFingers for well over a decade for training and so understandably I'm looking for hiking/outdoors barefoot shoes for, probably, the last two years... I'm glad they are made of leather and not that "vegan shoes" nonsense. You covered every possible aspect I could think of so that was great. I'm always sceptical about some sort of fancy tech lining inside boots. It always deteriorates after a year or so and doesn't do what it is supposed to do. Unfortunately, 3 hours of resisting water is definitely not enough for me. I wonder if you'd treat them mountain-hunting boot style (make them wet + waterproofing product (wax) + 24h + remove the excess of the product) would that make them last for a day? Thanks for the kind words. A very interesting point with the treatment but I'm not sure it would work. I only realise now that I never mentioned where I thought the water was coming in. There's a thing on the boot that I believe is a vent to help with breathability. So even if you wax the boots as you've suggested I think they will still let in, unless you block up the vents. I'll send you a picture on Insta of what I'm talking about.
I am thinking of trying these- I've had great satisfaction going without socks with the new balance 10v1 and the xero aqua shoe. Less ankle pain and back/sciatic pain. I’m wondering if these are also comfortable without socks. I like the idea of something minimalist that is water resistant and haven’t found anything so far. Would you suggest sizing down if socks are not worn? Thanks
Great review, I love barefoot/minimalist shoes and have a pair of these in the post now, should be perfect for playing in the woods as my Altras aren’t great when there’s a bit of wet around on short trips. Thanks for the video 👍

I am too transitioning to barefoot shoes currently trialling the Vivobarefoot primus FG's just for gym and everyday. Looking forward to a hiking boot for long distance multiday hikes, I am happy to feel the ground beneath my feet, but do they offer puncture protection?
I've not tried stepping on nails and that but the soles are hardy. I'd also check out the Magna Forest ESC they are an excellent hiking shoe option. I use the FG's for everyday use also and love them. Sorry about the delay in reply.
I tried them this week and unfortunately I have to send them back for a reason. The pros: As soon as I put them on I felt that they are very comfortable, the toe has good space, the leather of the shoes is very soft and flexible, it seems to wear a pillow,, I think they are the most comfortable I have ever tried. Neutral: the ankle support is a little too high for me, if I lace up all the way up the restriction of movement bothers me a bit, but if I lace up halfway they still feel comfortable enough. Cons: This is the reason why I decided not to keep them. under the heel, walking you can feel the spur of the Michelin sole, which compared to other soles is very big and annoying. I feel like I'm walking with a big stone stuck under my heel and every time I put it down I feel its pressure. for this reason I think that walking some hours could hurt or be very annoying. with the other vivo soles it doesn't happen to me, only with this one.
Please help... I'm going back to the south coastal path and last time my souls got quite tender. But I had vivabarefoot with white sole trying to understand whether there is much difference between the Tracker sole and the Forest ESC Tracker Michelin sole. Is the Michelin one a little better for 20 miles a day walking or just the same?

I actually haven't come across that problem but you're not the first person to mention that. The only issue I had was a pressure point on the back of my heel but I sorted that with my socks.

I have a pair of Magna SG (and Primus Trail SG before that) and had to go down 1/2 US or 1 EU size compared to Merrell or Xero. It's good to hear Tracker Esc have decent water resistance! I'm still a little torn about these vs Tracker FG for muddy trails or rainy hikes though. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I was skeptical at first on rainy trails but I was happy with how they dried. It really depends on what trade offs you are willing to take.
@mikechelen If you're going on muddy trails I wouldn't recommend the tracker II FG. They offer no grip on slippery surfaces, how I didn't break something is a testament to my bone strength. They are however great when the terrain is dry. They are also great for traversing rocks too, just not wet ones
Interesting 🤔. No I never experience that issue at all and that's the first I've heard of that. Maybe it's the vent they have on the side of the ankle but it definitely didn't bother me.
I’ve only recently discovered the bear foot shoe/boot thing. Looking at hiking boots after many years “on the couch “😁. I’ve kind of accidentally been wearing almost a bear foot boot for ages,my gum boots fit most of the criteria and are the most comfortable things I own other than bear feet. I really don’t enjoy my standard heeled work boots. I have some Scarpa boots but I just can’t wear them anymore,too ridged around the ankle and like trying to walk with your feet glued to boards. Not to mention crushing my toe’s into them as well. These look really good,but it’s quite an outlay,if I can find some in Australia,and probably not being able to try them on either. How do you think they would go carrying a decent load,say 15-20kg? and most likely on harder ground/rocks. Not that I want to,but sometimes you need to carry all you water here.
A good online shop for barefoot shoes is bprimal. I have a hard time doing away with my Scarpa Kailash boots for snow hiking. But yeah, they're heavy as.
Great review, thank you for going so in-depth! I do mostly mountain hiking so lots of potential for stepping on sharp rocks, some scrambling, wet roots and rocks to look out for, and more. Would you say these would hold up through that?? I've also rolled my ankles countless times so wondering if the ankle support is sturdy. If not, does anyone have good recommendations for a hiking boot with a wide toe box, similar to how Altra shoes allow the toes to spread all the way through the top? Most of the hiking boot 'wide' options still push all the toes together at the top which is horrible for feet in the long run :/
I've read, and also heard from a friend who got a pair of vivo hiking shoes, that while they don't have much ankle support, since your foot is able to move much more freely, it's harder to roll your ankles because if you slip you can use the grip of your foot to avoid putting the weight on your ankles. My friend explicitly told me that she was happy about her vivos because she used to roll her ankles a lot in her old hiking shoes and with vivos this isn't a problem anymore for her. I personally haven't tried a pair yet but I hope this helps.

I haven't tried the Tracker 2 but I have spoke to some people about them and the response was 50-50 in terms of people liking them. However, on the other hand most people I've spoke to about the TF ESC did like them. I wish I could give you a better answer but I just don't have enough knowledge on the Tracker 2.

Thank you for your kind words. The TF ESC is very good in mucky conditions, however, it is water resistant and will let in, so the question is, are you willing for your feet to get damp for breathability? If not the Tracker FG might be what you go for if you are sticking with Vivo.
@@MountainMikesAdventures Heyy, thought I might drop a little update here. I did wind up choosing the Forests, late last spring, had them about 7 mos. I've had them out in all the conditions I wanted them for, including rocky & rooty, through streams & puddles, mud, snow, slush. They've kept my feet dry from the beginning, but I've not had them out as long as 3 hrs in really wet stuff. Just before winter I treated them with Sno-Seal (a great beeswax waterproofing product), and I plan to continue that when & as needed. I'm loving these boots more every time I use them :~)
The sizing it wrong. You need a size smaller than what you normally get. They have an app now, where you photo your foot A4 paper and it tells you your size.
Depends how wide your feet are and how you will use the boots. I have very wide feet and will use the boots for multi day backpacking so I need the room for my feet to expand. YMMV :)
Hi there. Question about the durability of the sole. How quickly is the rubber wearing out? I've had mine for one month and the rubber is wearing out significantly after only approximately 20 miles of soft trail and 7 miles of road.
Excellent review Mike, just like the boot. About the toecaps: I understand the scarring issue, but I think toecaps would make the boot stiffer. By the way: they have about 450 km since september last year.
Mostly muddy terrain and woods. I understand they would be more “abused” in rocky terrain. But also branches and thorns leave marks on the toes. Until now: the perfect hiking shoe.
Brilliant review....I found with my tracker fg’s that I had to size up. I’m normally a 44 & went with a 45. When I put them side by side with my work boots, you’d think they’re the same size though.

@@MountainMikesAdventures hmmm, it’s a bit hard to say atm as I’ve only just bought them but from the times I have worn them, I seem to love them more each time & I can’t wait for a patina to develop on them. I do fear that that these damned boots may have f*cking ruined my expensive boot collection since I don’t think I am go back to normal shoes/boots anymore. I’m actually planning to wear these as work boots (I do construction) but as a private contractor on residential jobs, I can get away without safety toe boots. So it’ll be interesting to see how they last. My last dedicated work boots lasted about 4 years. I’ll be happy if they last the same & I reckon they just might as I reckon these are made with better materials. The only think I worry about is that flex point where I hear the sole separates from the leather, which doesn’t worry me if that’s all that happens (I don’t care about if they leak or not - I don’t need to wade in puddles). Anyway, I’m rambling now.
@@stevej.6674 interested, yeah they are the only type of shoe I wear also, except for running I'm still using salomon running shoes. Ha I also have the same issue lots of money on boots and the like but I still use the heavy leather boots in winter. I'd be interested to see how well they hold up in work suitations, they will be super comfortable though. I work in healthcare so they are perfect for being on my feet for most of the day. And don't worry ramble away.
That's interesting, I've had to size down by 1/2 US (1 EU) for the all Vivobarefoot shoes I've had. Perhaps this is due to comparison with other barefoot style shoes? For example I am 9.5m in Merrell trail glove or Xero brand, but 9 in Vivobarefoot.
How would they do in desert conditions? 40c for example… I can’t decide between the Magna esc or Forrest esc. I think I would prefer the Magna as it will feel more “free” why out the ankle collar, but anyways.
As in terms of the Magna esc are you talking about the Magna Forrest ESC? The new ones? I've actually just gotten a pair of those and will be trying them out this weekend. Desert conditions 🤔 I'm not sure I think they might do well but sadly Ireland is far removed from 40°C. Let me try out the Magna Forest ESC and get back to you.
Hi, so I was testing the Magna forest ESC over the weekend and I like them. Now, the ankle collar as you mentioned is elasticated and it fits very snugly, so I'm not sure if that will create more or less warmth in desert conditions. Also the inside of the boot itself is snug and feels really nice so once again I'm not sure if that would be warmer or cooler in those hot conditions. As you hinted it did make my ankle feel more free in the Magna Forest Esc. I hope that info helps.
@@MountainMikesAdventures how breathable would you say they are? I have the primus II all weather… I love them, but they are not breathable. In warm conditions indoors or even in the car my feet sweat badly. I’m also contemplating the Magna FG as an all around active “work shoe” that is breathable but would help keep crud out. I’m an agronomist by trade, so I walk fields and they are often dewey or dusty. I need something that has some protection and grip, but I’ll also be on tarmac and in town. I’m a bit concerned the sole on the escape is a bit to aggressive for all around use. Is it off putting on tarmac if you were to wear them as an all around shoe? I like that the esc sole is sown on!
I had the same thing with sizing. Been a 44 in all of my Vivos but these felt longer and a bigger gap at the toe despite looking the same as my 44 trackers side by side. I felt the 43 would be too small.
Your comment comes just in time :) Would you say Forest ESC run longer than Tracker II or Magna Trail or Trail Knit or Primus? Because I am just in between sizes, so this can help determine to go up or down.
@@irfannurkanovic3715 I don’t know 🤷. When I stand on the insole they look fine, I’ve put the soles of my tracker FG and Scott boots against each other and side by side and they look the same but there seems to be a larger space between my toes and the end of the boots.
@@requiscatinpace7392 I think I had the same thing happen with Primus Trail II. That is probably due to sewing or the way the sole wraps over the upper material, so effectively the same insole size fits both, but one can feel (and be really) shorter than another model because the sole goes up higher.
I bought these boots, and really like them, but find that I have quite a bit of a hotspot on my heel. I am aware of the fact that I am probably heel striking due to bad habits from regular shoes, but I do find when walking up a hill for example my heel tends to pop up a bit and hit the boot right where the hard ankle support material is. I am trying to determine if it is a bad fit or just bad walking habits. Anyone else have this experience or have any advice? Thanks :)
I had this exact same problem just on my right foot. I had reservations about the sizing because having followed Barefoot’s sizing guide recommendation it came up as 41 where I’d normally take a 42-43. I went with it though and the 41 fit like gloves except for the hot spot exactly where you describe it. Try playing around with the lacing third and fourth lug down. Getting the lacing right there solved the problem. It worked for me but sure, it’s also possible you’re in the wrong sized boots. Just realised you asked this 9 months ago so probably not much use to you now but might be useful to someone else.
U know what, I think if u guys are gonna start getting into barefoot shoes, it may be a good idea to get accustomed to walking barefoot at home like an Asian. Lots of benefits. U get to have more barefoot exposure without overexerting urself or getting overwhelmed from the harsh terrain, doing it daily makes u accustomed to it faster, and u wont bring in the dirt and grime from outside into ur home, making the floors cleaner. Just a suggestion.
100km is not alot! The average walking pace for most adults is around 4.8 kilometers per hour (3 miles per hour). And so you have worn these for maybe 30 hours and apparently put them through there paces..😂🤣😅 That is funny. Are you sponsored????
Not necessarily, it depends on what you want and what trade offs your willing to accept. Some people will happily trade waterproofing for breathability, as I found out on my other review video. Will I be using these on the mountains and hills during winter, not a chance. However, I will be using these during the summer on trails as I find them more comfortable than any waterproof boot I've tried so far.
Waterproof boots are actually not the best for hiking. Your feet will sweat and waterproof layers prevent breathability. Water can still get through the top. As there is no way for the moisture to escape, you will end up with wet feet which is the worst you can have on long trails. It will take forever for your waterproof boots to dry too.
@@Flamdring As I mentioned in the previous comment both have pros and cons depending on what you want. I have a pair of leather Zamberlands and with gaiters they have never let in. Now, I used them in a 1000km thru hike and they weren't very comfortable. However, up the mountains and in bog they are great, plus I can get crampons on them in snowy/icy contiotion.

I want to get these boots for Christmas because they are expensive (ZAR3430.00 with the sale that is going on, this is the woman's. The men's discount is ZAR 3538. ZAR4717 without discount for both) BTW, I like that the men version and women version cost the exact same without the discount. the only diff between them is that the woman's one goes smaller (smallest 35EU, biggest 43EU) while the men's one can goes bigger (smallest 40EU, biggest 49EU) lastly while writing this the date is 2022y/11m/09d (y=year, m=month d=day) idk why mine is backwards
(I'm 13 and 163cm tall. my feet are very wide and I hate wearing shoes because they don't let you move around very well and all most all shoes are very narrow) this is context for the comment I left
Best dang boot I have ever owned. Wore them all sunmer in the heat and dust at my kids' motocross racing while camping 3 to 6 days at a time in a tent. Boot surprisingly kept my feet cool and although the terrain was hard on my feet, I felt really good and never uncomfortable wearing boots all day and into the evening. ESC is the best for hiking too, made my feet go up half a size and wider.

Sharp rocks shouldn’t be an issue as you should be more Careful with foot placement! That’s the point of barefoot shoes.
The cause you to walk really carefully. As someone who actually walks barefoot every summer as much as possible including in towns and shops, you just become better at scanning ahead.
What you find happens is your brain automatically registers things to be careful of and it doesn’t take looking down or conscious effort so much.
I just ordered a pair of these for work (I’m required to wear black boots) from Revivo. I’m really excited to try these out when they arrive! I do tons of hiking and I’m considering snagging a pair of these for the trails. Thank you for the review!

Cracking review, Mike...and nice to see you put some hard miles into them 👍 The lack of a toe buffer was a big issue I had with my Tracker FG's and while it's a bit disappointing they haven't sorted this with these boots, they still look the absolute business. Glad to see you back in the game, sir!

Great review Mike, I'd say it 100% matches my experience with them. Definite pros being comfort, grip and breathability/quick drying - so much nicer than getting a soaked through Gore-Tex style boot that can take days to dry out. The cons, as you mention, scuffs and battered feet on rocky trails. I think the latter is my biggest issue as most of my hiking in the Lakes is on very uneven rocky trails and my feet know all about it, there's no way to walk on such ground to avoid some rock stabbing you in the heel at some point unfortunately. When hiking in woodland, grassland, moors and tarmac though they're amazing which I guess with where they're really aimed at with the whole "forest" thing in the name! I did try my old Altbergs for the first time the other day, I felt like I'd grown 6 inches and had stuck a ton of lead on each foot, so restrictive it was crazy.
I pretty much wear the Vivos as my everyday shoe now because they're so comfy. If Vivo did come up with a Mountain style boot I'm not sure how they'd be able to resolve the battered foot issue as in the barefoot ethos the soles need to be thin and flexible, here's hoping for a miracle though 😉 I have tried my FG Trails up on the limestone crags thinking that being designed for 'firm ground' they'd maybe be better but if anything they were worse.
On a vague tangent I think the world needs some better barefoot sock options in general but obviously not the mental looking 5 toe jobs 🤣 I feel like most socks restrict toe spreading to some extent (my running socks are very tight around the toes for example but really help with blister protection) this obviously defeats the purpose of a wide toe box. Time for Vivo to think up something to match their shoes I think or better yet improve the shoe linings so socks aren't required at all.

I'm also wearing Vivo's as my everyday shoe except when I run for that I have a pair of Salomon's. As you mentioned they are very comfy and I find standardised shoes fairly restrictive particularly around the toes. I've a pair of solid Zamberlan boots for winter, as you said I've experienced the same feelings. Very heavy and very restrictive, yet they offer so much protection underfoot and have excellent waterproof capabilities. Yet I have had issues with blisters in them particularly on the back of the heels but it's about the trade off I suppose.
Well you never know, engineers do sometimes come up with the impossible and I live in hope that one day there will be a mountain tracker. However, as you said I also have no idea how they would be able to give more protection and yet keep the sole thin with a zero heal drop.
Very interesting tangent with the socks, I never actually considered that but some better barefoot sock options would be amazing.
I had the same issue with the Trackers, trying to avoid the rocky surfaces on Lakeland trails, but after 5 months of daily dog walks, I now enjoy it like a foot massage, to the extent it makes the once edgy nigh-time walk in my Gobi`s, feel positively tame.
It's good to know some more conditioning on the feet will help.

The five toe socks like Injinjii have always been comfy for me, however they aren't really thick enough for cold weather. It looks like they now offer a liner + thick outer combo, and the outer has a wide toe box so maybe those are worth a try?
Do you think the Forest ESC boots would these survive Patagonia in November? More worried about warmth than comfort, been on the barefoot train for 5 years. It'd be Spring time, Basically in between 5 and 15 degrees celcius
I've just ordered Tracker textile FG. They have toe cap, should be completly waterproof. I have 28.1 - 28.2cm long feet, so hopefully i didn't make mistake regarding the size i oredered, which is 45EU.

I find the collar really stiff when I do it up for a tight fit. It is currently quite restrictive on my ankle forward movement. Does it soften up over time as you break it in or do you just not do it up tight?
Here's a tip: if you are starting into barefoot shoes and looking to buy these , you can buy insoles with added support to ease the transition.
Awsome review!! Need your help!! I was lucky enough to try these on in person today! They are soo comfortable but I’m in between a 43 and a 44 in sizing! The 43 is the better fit although on the tighter side and the 44 just feels to loose. Does that leather actually loosen up a bit after breakin period??? I would think so since it’s so soft?? If it does loosen up then I think I would go with the smaller size??? Please help!!

Was impressed with them and was looking at getting a pair, I hunt, mainly bush hunting and was looking for a light weight boot, the grip looked great, but straight away noticed the lack of toe protection, some rubber there wouldn't be amiss. Their $400 ...still deli eating, thk again for the review, very informative
spot on about the toe cap. i received a pair of these about a month ago. i have taken them on two arduous mountain hikes. a toe cap is a must. not only for wear and tear but you can stub your toes pretty well too. also have worn them through brush and ended up with a deep gouge in the leather. The soles work well enough. i was considering gluing a rand on them for kicks.
Yeah, the toe cap is an issue but I have spoke to people that have worn them 500km+ and they are still hanging in there. Ha, did you go for that rand in the end?
I'm curious to know what glue you used for this. The sole of my original trackers are tearing off a lot...

Great barefoot boots. Have worn them a lot on some very long / cold / wet hikes in Scotland a few weeks ago, as well as winter hikes at home here in Eryri. Longest one was 22km with 1200m of ascent. No problems, even with some sections of really rough rocky sections. Had to be a bit more careful with foot placements, just as I would I suppose if I was actually barefoot. I like the thinish sole for the ‘feelground’ sensation, please don’t make them any thicker! Repanur wax (as recommended by Vivobarefoot) makes them waterproof enough for me. Breathability is very good.
Only issue for me is catching the toe on steeper rocky ground. Never any foot pain at all, just scuffing on the leather. So far, the wax makes them look ‘as new’. But not sure how long they will last before holes will appear. Some sort of rubber toe rand raising might be an option?

Strengthening your ankles is the other side of no ankle support. It's a plus or a minus, depending on your perspective. I've watched several of these reviews and I'm still wondering if these are suitable for backpacking with heavy loads (40-50 pounds). I'm a fan of barefoot shoes, but as a serious hiking boot, I'm still skeptical.
How are they holding up? I wish they did a fg tracker upper (waterproof and not hot) with a ESC tread for grip. These boots look great but they seem hot and a faff to keep having to treat them

Have they updated the durability, I have owned two pairs of FG trackers for the last 6 years and they never last as long as I would like. Usually you will see the sole seperate from the top slightly within the first few months ruining any water proofing, by about 8 months the sole is worn down flat or has holes. Been waiting for them to use something more durable for a while.
The Forest ESC use stitching rather than relying on glue, so that shouldn't be nearly as much of a problem.

The durability has been quite good thus far but I haven't been using them as much over the winter. I have had reports from others how have tested them longer than me and they are holding well for them.
I used 5-finger shoes almost exclusively for a couple of years and absolutely loved them. Now 90% set on buying these. Great review.

187 miles DNF at Moab 240. I loved them. Leather treated them when I got home and I'll keep using them. Only bashed my toe twice the whole time and the tread saved me. Pick your feet up and you got nothing to worry about. 10/10
Hey Mike, first of all, thanks for the review. I'm using Vibram FiveFingers for well over a decade for training and so understandably I'm looking for hiking/outdoors barefoot shoes for, probably, the last two years... I'm glad they are made of leather and not that "vegan shoes" nonsense. You covered every possible aspect I could think of so that was great. I'm always sceptical about some sort of fancy tech lining inside boots. It always deteriorates after a year or so and doesn't do what it is supposed to do. Unfortunately, 3 hours of resisting water is definitely not enough for me. I wonder if you'd treat them mountain-hunting boot style (make them wet + waterproofing product (wax) + 24h + remove the excess of the product) would that make them last for a day? A very interesting point with the treatment but I'm not sure it would work. I only realise now that I never mentioned where I thought the water was coming in. There's a thing on the boot that I believe is a vent to help with breathability. So even if you wax the boots as you've suggested I think they will still let in, unless you block up the vents. I'll send you a picture on Insta of what I'm talking about.

Use gore Tex type socks if you really want more water proofing. Change em out ...use them only when needed.
I am thinking of trying these- I've had great satisfaction going without socks with the new balance 10v1 and the xero aqua shoe. Less ankle pain and back/sciatic pain. I’m wondering if these are also comfortable without socks. I like the idea of something minimalist that is water resistant and haven’t found anything so far. Would you suggest sizing down if socks are not worn? Thanks

I am too transitioning to barefoot shoes currently trialling the Vivobarefoot primus FG's just for gym and everyday. Looking forward to a hiking boot for long distance multiday hikes, I am happy to feel the ground beneath my feet, but do they offer puncture protection?
I've not tried stepping on nails and that but the soles are hardy. I'd also check out the Magna Forest ESC they are an excellent hiking shoe option. I use the FG's for everyday use also and love them. Sorry about the delay in reply.
Do you think a tumb wide at the front will be perfect size or should i get them one size smaller?
I tried them this week and unfortunately I have to send them back for a reason. The pros: As soon as I put them on I felt that they are very comfortable, the toe has good space, the leather of the shoes is very soft and flexible, it seems to wear a pillow,, I think they are the most comfortable I have ever tried. Neutral: the ankle support is a little too high for me, if I lace up all the way up the restriction of movement bothers me a bit, but if I lace up halfway they still feel comfortable enough. Cons: This is the reason why I decided not to keep them. under the heel, walking you can feel the spur of the Michelin sole, which compared to other soles is very big and annoying. I feel like I'm walking with a big stone stuck under my heel and every time I put it down I feel its pressure. for this reason I think that walking some hours could hurt or be very annoying. with the other vivo soles it doesn't happen to me, only with this one.
Please help... I'm going back to the south coastal path and last time my souls got quite tender. But I had vivabarefoot with white sole trying to understand whether there is much difference between the Tracker sole and the Forest ESC Tracker Michelin sole. Is the Michelin one a little better for 20 miles a day walking or just the same?

I actually haven't come across that problem but you're not the first person to mention that. The only issue I had was a pressure point on the back of my heel but I sorted that with my socks.

I have a pair of Magna SG (and Primus Trail SG before that) and had to go down 1/2 US or 1 EU size compared to Merrell or Xero. It's good to hear Tracker Esc have decent water resistance! I'm still a little torn about these vs Tracker FG for muddy trails or rainy hikes though. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I was skeptical at first on rainy trails but I was happy with how they dried. It really depends on what trade offs you are willing to take.

If you're going on muddy trails I wouldn't recommend the tracker II FG. They offer no grip on slippery surfaces, how I didn't break something is a testament to my bone strength. They are however great when the terrain is dry. They are also great for traversing rocks too, just not wet ones

Interesting 🤔. No I never experience that issue at all and that's the first I've heard of that. Maybe it's the vent they have on the side of the ankle but it definitely didn't bother me.

I’ve only recently discovered the bear foot shoe/boot thing. Looking at hiking boots after many years “on the couch “😁. I’ve kind of accidentally been wearing almost a bear foot boot for ages,my gum boots fit most of the criteria and are the most comfortable things I own other than bear feet. I really don’t enjoy my standard heeled work boots.
I have some Scarpa boots but I just can’t wear them anymore,too ridged around the ankle and like trying to walk with your feet glued to boards. Not to mention crushing my toe’s into them as well.
These look really good,but it’s quite an outlay,if I can find some in Australia,and probably not being able to try them on either.
How do you think they would go carrying a decent load,say 15-20kg? and most likely on harder ground/rocks. Not that I want to,but sometimes you need to carry all you water here.
A good online shop for barefoot shoes is bprimal. I have a hard time doing away with my Scarpa Kailash boots for snow hiking. But yeah, they're heavy as.
Great review, thank you for going so in-depth! I do mostly mountain hiking so lots of potential for stepping on sharp rocks, some scrambling, wet roots and rocks to look out for, and more. Would you say these would hold up through that?? I've also rolled my ankles countless times so wondering if the ankle support is sturdy. If not, does anyone have good recommendations for a hiking boot with a wide toe box, similar to how Altra shoes allow the toes to spread all the way through the top? Most of the hiking boot 'wide' options still push all the toes together at the top which is horrible for feet in the long run :/
I've read, and also heard from a friend who got a pair of vivo hiking shoes, that while they don't have much ankle support, since your foot is able to move much more freely, it's harder to roll your ankles because if you slip you can use the grip of your foot to avoid putting the weight on your ankles. My friend explicitly told me that she was happy about her vivos because she used to roll her ankles a lot in her old hiking shoes and with vivos this isn't a problem anymore for her. I personally haven't tried a pair yet but I hope this helps.

I feel they can handle what you need them for better. Will you have much weight in you pack? or will you be sticking to day trails?

I haven't tried the Tracker 2 but I have spoke to some people about them and the response was 50-50 in terms of people liking them. However, on the other hand most people I've spoke to about the TF ESC did like them. I wish I could give you a better answer but I just don't have enough knowledge on the Tracker 2.

Thank you for your kind words. The TF ESC is very good in mucky conditions, however, it is water resistant and will let in, so the question is, are you willing for your feet to get damp for breathability? If not the Tracker FG might be what you go for if you are sticking with Vivo.

@@MountainMikesAdventures Heyy, thought I might drop a little update here. I did wind up choosing the Forests, late last spring, had them about 7 mos. I've had them out in all the conditions I wanted them for, including rocky & rooty, through streams & puddles, mud, snow, slush. They've kept my feet dry from the beginning, but I've not had them out as long as 3 hrs in really wet stuff. Just before winter I treated them with Sno-Seal (a great beeswax waterproofing product), and I plan to continue that when & as needed.
I'm loving these boots more every time I use them :~)
I really don't know if I should get these forest ESC or the primus fg.
The sizing it wrong. You need a size smaller than what you normally get. They have an app now, where you photo your foot A4 paper and it tells you your size.
Depends how wide your feet are and how you will use the boots. I have very wide feet and will use the boots for multi day backpacking so I need the room for my feet to expand. YMMV :)

Hi there. Question about the durability of the sole. How quickly is the rubber wearing out? I've had mine for one month and the rubber is wearing out significantly after only approximately 20 miles of soft trail and 7 miles of road.

Mostly muddy terrain and woods. I understand they would be more “abused” in rocky terrain. But also branches and thorns leave marks on the toes. Until now: the perfect hiking shoe.

Brilliant review....I found with my tracker fg’s that I had to size up. I’m normally a 44 & went with a 45. When I put them side by side with my work boots, you’d think they’re the same size though.

@@MountainMikesAdventures hmmm, it’s a bit hard to say atm as I’ve only just bought them but from the times I have worn them, I seem to love them more each time & I can’t wait for a patina to develop on them. I do fear that that these damned boots may have f*cking ruined my expensive boot collection since I don’t think I am go back to normal shoes/boots anymore.
I’m actually planning to wear these as work boots (I do construction) but as a private contractor on residential jobs, I can get away without safety toe boots. So it’ll be interesting to see how they last. My last dedicated work boots lasted about 4 years. I’ll be happy if they last the same & I reckon they just might as I reckon these are made with better materials. The only think I worry about is that flex point where I hear the sole separates from the leather, which doesn’t worry me if that’s all that happens (I don’t care about if they leak or not - I don’t need to wade in puddles). Anyway, I’m rambling now.

I'd be interested to see how well they hold up in work suitations, they will be super comfortable though. I work in healthcare so they are perfect for being on my feet for most of the day.

That's interesting, I've had to size down by 1/2 US (1 EU) for the all Vivobarefoot shoes I've had. Perhaps this is due to comparison with other barefoot style shoes? For example I am 9.5m in Merrell trail glove or Xero brand, but 9 in Vivobarefoot.
How would they do in desert conditions? 40c for example… I can’t decide between the Magna esc or Forrest esc. I think I would prefer the Magna as it will feel more “free” why out the ankle collar, but anyways.
As in terms of the Magna esc are you talking about the Magna Forrest ESC? The new ones? I've actually just gotten a pair of those and will be trying them out this weekend.
Desert conditions 🤔 I'm not sure I think they might do well but sadly Ireland is far removed from 40°C. Let me try out the Magna Forest ESC and get back to you.
Hi, so I was testing the Magna forest ESC over the weekend and I like them. Now, the ankle collar as you mentioned is elasticated and it fits very snugly, so I'm not sure if that will create more or less warmth in desert conditions. Also the inside of the boot itself is snug and feels really nice so once again I'm not sure if that would be warmer or cooler in those hot conditions. As you hinted it did make my ankle feel more free in the Magna Forest Esc. I hope that info helps.

@@MountainMikesAdventures how breathable would you say they are? I have the primus II all weather… I love them, but they are not breathable. In warm conditions indoors or even in the car my feet sweat badly.
I’m also contemplating the Magna FG as an all around active “work shoe” that is breathable but would help keep crud out.
I’m an agronomist by trade, so I walk fields and they are often dewey or dusty. I need something that has some protection and grip, but I’ll also be on tarmac and in town.
I’m a bit concerned the sole on the escape is a bit to aggressive for all around use. Is it off putting on tarmac if you were to wear them as an all around shoe? I like that the esc sole is sown on!

barefooting increases fart rate, pressure through your sole especially on rocks travels upwards, you just have to get used to it 😃

I had the same thing with sizing. Been a 44 in all of my Vivos but these felt longer and a bigger gap at the toe despite looking the same as my 44 trackers side by side. I felt the 43 would be too small.

Would you say Forest ESC run longer than Tracker II or Magna Trail or Trail Knit or Primus? Because I am just in between sizes, so this can help determine to go up or down.
@@irfannurkanovic3715 I don’t know 🤷. When I stand on the insole they look fine, I’ve put the soles of my tracker FG and Scott boots against each other and side by side and they look the same but there seems to be a larger space between my toes and the end of the boots.
@@requiscatinpace7392 I think I had the same thing happen with Primus Trail II. That is probably due to sewing or the way the sole wraps over the upper material, so effectively the same insole size fits both, but one can feel (and be really) shorter than another model because the sole goes up higher.
Just bought a pair. They seem to dig into the backs of my ankles. Anybody experience this. Do know whether I’ve fat ankles!
Flexible ankle support = oxymoron?
I bought these boots, and really like them, but find that I have quite a bit of a hotspot on my heel. I am aware of the fact that I am probably heel striking due to bad habits from regular shoes, but I do find when walking up a hill for example my heel tends to pop up a bit and hit the boot right where the hard ankle support material is. I am trying to determine if it is a bad fit or just bad walking habits. Anyone else have this experience or have any advice? Thanks :)
I had this exact same problem just on my right foot. I had reservations about the sizing because having followed Barefoot’s sizing guide recommendation it came up as 41 where I’d normally take a 42-43. I went with it though and the 41 fit like gloves except for the hot spot exactly where you describe it. Try playing around with the lacing third and fourth lug down. Getting the lacing right there solved the problem. It worked for me but sure, it’s also possible you’re in the wrong sized boots. Just realised you asked this 9 months ago so probably not much use to you now but might be useful to someone else.
U know what, I think if u guys are gonna start getting into barefoot shoes, it may be a good idea to get accustomed to walking barefoot at home like an Asian. Lots of benefits. U get to have more barefoot exposure without overexerting urself or getting overwhelmed from the harsh terrain, doing it daily makes u accustomed to it faster, and u wont bring in the dirt and grime from outside into ur home, making the floors cleaner. Just a suggestion.
Be perfect for hilly muddy hills and forests where I live. Just the price for me..

100km is not alot! The average walking pace for most adults is around 4.8 kilometers per hour (3 miles per hour). And so you have worn these for maybe 30 hours and apparently put them through there paces..😂🤣😅 That is funny. Are you sponsored????

If you are not walking at four miles an hour for fitness you can't see all the stone's and rocks so easy answer is proper hiking boots.
Barefoot is about to keep the foot free. Toe CAP doesn't sound it.
They could at least have some kind of synthetic flexible material for the toe cap. Rocky trails will tear apart the leather toes.

Not necessarily, it depends on what you want and what trade offs your willing to accept. Some people will happily trade waterproofing for breathability, as I found out on my other review video. Will I be using these on the mountains and hills during winter, not a chance. However, I will be using these during the summer on trails as I find them more comfortable than any waterproof boot I've tried so far.
Waterproof boots are actually not the best for hiking. Your feet will sweat and waterproof layers prevent breathability. Water can still get through the top. As there is no way for the moisture to escape, you will end up with wet feet which is the worst you can have on long trails. It will take forever for your waterproof boots to dry too.
@@Flamdring As I mentioned in the previous comment both have pros and cons depending on what you want. I have a pair of leather Zamberlands and with gaiters they have never let in. Now, I used them in a 1000km thru hike and they weren't very comfortable. However, up the mountains and in bog they are great, plus I can get crampons on them in snowy/icy contiotion.
Treat them in a good leather treatment and they’ll be a lot more waterproof and probably last longer
@@kevinames2816 Thanks, any recommendations for the leather treatment? The only thing about the waterproofing is the vents on the side of the boot as that is how I believe the water gets in.

I want to get these boots for Christmas because they are expensive (ZAR3430.00 with the sale that is going on, this is the woman's. The men's discount is ZAR 3538. ZAR4717 without discount for both) BTW, I like that the men version and women version cost the exact same without the discount. the only diff between them is that the woman's one goes smaller (smallest 35EU, biggest 43EU) while the men's one can goes bigger (smallest 40EU, biggest 49EU) lastly while writing this the date is 2022y/11m/09d (y=year, m=month d=day) idk why mine is backwards
(I'm 13 and 163cm tall. my feet are very wide and I hate wearing shoes because they don't let you move around very well and all most all shoes are very narrow) this is context for the comment I left
The mens shoes are wider than the same size ladies shoe.
