I purchased this bicycle without a proper inspection and Im going to pay for it. Check out the video and tell me what you think. This is a 1980 Competition GS. The frame is in OK condition, riders quality I like to say. However it may be cracked. Which makes this a bag of parts.

Waaah, you never heard of Gipiemme!! It's "GPM" pronounced as a word (in Italian). Their stuff is everywhere - derailleurs, shifters, brakes, brake levers, chainsets, BBs, pedals, seat posts, saddles, wheel hubs & rims ... pretty well full groupset ... and they were a major player in dropouts ... bars & stems too though they are rare. They manufactured a lot but also badge engineered some components, notably some of their derailleurs. Today the brand is all about wheels - nothing else. Nisi is a wholly owned sub-brand. My mid-1980s Giubilato Cromovelato is a Gipiemme project - beautiful thing.

Probably one of my fav. bikes. I got a new one in '78 from where else? Chuck's Cycle Shop in S.Elgin. While stationed in Germany, the rear brake lug tore loose. A letter to Nottingham later, they said go exchange the frame in Bitburg. Euro graphics including a HandBuilt in England on the seattube. No more chrome rear stays though. I upgraded the parts thru a German toy store which ordered all S.R. with titanium pedal stems, and a titanium crank spindle. Home a week in Elgin, stolen! I was devistated. I now have a rare white/blue '72 which is rare. Yes, great ride quality, my next commuting bike. I call those rims dirt trappers. Good rims though.

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage I think it was in '83, the Nottingham frames no longer imported due to the Raleigh USA thing. I have a euro catalog that shows them still available. A Raleigh catalog in Deutch. So yes, very rare on U.S. soil.

You couldn't pry me outta that room once we started talking old steel bikes. I had a 1980 Guerciotti track frame with Shimano 10 mm pitch track gear. No brakes made riding the central PA hills....interesting.

I have what I suspect is a 1984 Carlton framed (or so the frame # says) Raleigh Competition and 700 c wheels fit very well.

I always found the 3 arm crank attractive too, regardless of whether it was the T.A. on the earlier version of the Competition or this Campagnolo G.S. Regarding the possible crack.. is there any chance it's just paint damage from a bottle cage clamp? Hard to imagine how a crack like that could occur.

Great looking bike shame about the crack. Rebuild it with all your damaged and broken components, make a great conversation piece

Check out Louisville Kentucky Craigslist, 50th anniversary Campagnolo record groupo never used with case/documentation. $4800. If I were retired and wealthy I'd buy it in a second for a 50th anniversary schwinn paramount

I would strip it down to look at the crack but I also have a bad habit of removing old bike paint. It almost looks like an odd seam with the bottle boss.

Hey John, found a perfect pristine opaque blue 1975 schwinn paramount frameset w/headset and bottom bracket for $1200 bucks. It literally looks brand new. Think that's a fair price?

My builder is a one man show to keep costs down. Problem is that his queue is out over a year. His tig frames start at about $1700. A great deal and excellent value IF you're a serious rider.
Lugged frames are much more work and will cost accordingly.
I'm learning to braze and fillet weld. Its a lot of hard work, but worth it. Cool thing is I get EXACTLY what I want or I'll keep building bikes until I finally do! DIY is awesome and much cheaper, but you'd better be patient and learn from your mistakes!

  • @rollinrat4850

I think that's a dent from some sort of overtightened frame clamp. Its a very uniform dent. That deep a crease could be serious, but I'd just ride it until it fails. The only way you'd know is by sanding the paint off.
Steel is real. It's got a decent failure mode where it warns you well before it actually breaks IF you keep a sharp eye on it and listen while riding. Been there, done that. Ride 'em till they die! I'm a dedicated underbiker. Ive been riding dirt before MTBs existed! Ive only broken one steel frame in 50 years. This frame builder was better at welding rather than brazing!
    Ive known riders to over
torque their fancy stem and trash an overpriced 'plastic' h'bar. Some folks should never ever touch tools. Let the pros do it!!

There are other videos on that bike. One is comical when I strip off the paint. You were right. I sanded it off and everything was fine. No damage. I think someone did a spray can fix and it was a tape line. It looked like a crack honestly to me. But since I knew I was going to have it painted I didnt mind stripping it. Im sending it out to get repainted.. you'll see more vids on it. Thanks for watching
