The minute I hear anything Stockton's Wing or Moving Hearts, modern trad, straight away I'm teleported back to RTE In The 80s. They loved a bit of contemporary trad folk for every occasion - testcard music especially. Theme tunes for programs, incidental music in programs (Bosco comes to mind) and continuity of any kind, they were straight in with that sound. That music, plus in the winter it was already dark by the time RTE came on, so that sound, Bosco, and dark afternoons = The 80s.
Aye, my parents are Irish, and I was born there too. Visit my homeland quite frequently I do. Thanks for the upload, always good to hear some of my native music..:)
If anyone in Ireland at the time was able to see BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4 or S4C from Britain, anymore than just RTE, they would I guess have had more variety than just the test card here of course. But who knows though?
I recognise the first piece of music behind this test card...It is the Irish folk group STOCKTON'S WING with a track called 'The Trip to London'. Will check out name of second track (if I have it) and come back to you. Yes, there are a few TV anoraks out there as well. Ciao!!
The testcard was not really shown from 1997 onward, even though RTE 1 and Network 2 still closed down for the night. RTE 1 would show Aer Tel pages with Radio 1 broadcasting in the background and Network 2 would do the same, but with Radio 2 FM broadcasting in the background. RTE 1 stopped closing down in September 1998, but Network 2 continued to close down until sometime in the early 2000's, possibly when Network 2 reverted to the old name RTE 2.
a lot of good info and entertainment on the Aertel. You got most of the previous week's RTE Guide features and the staff writers (Alan Corr for instance, who wrote album and live reviews) new contributions.
We used to have the annoying beep on ABC in Australia, then we upgraded to music. Now the TV station doesn't even close down for the night. That's how cool we are!!!
Even though RTE didn't start until early to mid afternoon and only having two channels (before this, only one), at least there was better quality programming than there is today. Irish television in general has become very cringing and embarressing to watch, especially the adverts. Rest In Peace, Good Irish Television (1961-2000)
I remember even as late as 1996 that feckin test card would be on the screen on Network 2 until about lunch time on weekends. They'd just put 2FM on for the audio.
Can someone tell me Why since last Thursday,Certain Programmes like The Republic of Telly HAVE NOT been available here in the UK on the RTEPlayer? Disabled UK Carrer. GOD BLESS!
@tubedougz I think if even Ian Paisley, can sign the good friday agreement with sinn fein and put the past behind them, then you can to. Years have past since Ireland was under British rule, don't blame a whole nation and it's population, for somethng the majority of people would now deplore and be disgusted by, don't blame a generation for its predessors.
to irish rover you should see tv in Australia, pure trash and they should bring the test card around again just to replace the junk that is put out there as enterement. We used to have 5 channels and now we have over 20 with nothing to watch
To be honest BBC1 would use any excuse to go back to a testcard rather than broadcasting. BBC2 was as bad as RTE and didn't start up until 5.30, When Channel 4 launched that didn't start until 4.45. So with the exception of ITV that started tv from 9.30 in 1972, the UK was just as bad
This is a blast from the past. I remember as a kid waiting impatiently for the clock to appear and signal the imminent arrival of Bosco.

that blows all nostalgia out the window so it does, the boredom of my childhood is reaffirmed, another two hours till emmerdale!

Ah sweet sweet memories. Back before we had digital... RTE 1 & Network 2. What good friends they were...
If anyone in Ireland at the time was able to see BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4 or S4C from Britain, anymore than just RTE, they would I guess have had more variety than just the test card here of course. But who knows though?
Oh yes! Glory days indeed. And not an evil eyed child or scary clown in sight. God, I miss this testcard so much.
The device which generates this is made by Phillips- many TV stations use the same test card generator.

AH! memories! Im not sure why one test card would make me feel so gloriously nostalgic, BUT IT DOES. thanks a lot for uploading this.
This is actually more entertaining than Tubridy. And cheaper. Bring it back!
Well done. Very nice reproduction.

That show is actually a very good adaption from Color Bars with much wider array of characters and no censoring.
I like the way the testcard tone fades into the Irish music.
all I can say is i'm missing home.
Greetings from Maine
Christ u were lucky to have music with your test card, all I got was a loud drilling beep!
Even though RTE didn't start until early to mid afternoon and only having two channels (before this, only one), at least there was better quality programming than there is today. Irish television in general has become very cringing and embarressing to watch, especially the adverts.

Nice Video from Irland

Like the way the music starts off.

fucking hell.. stocktons wing, my dad is the fiddler for them
This bloody thing was the bane of my life when I was little ha ha
Transmission begins with emmerdale farm at three!! three p.m.!!!
hahaha brilliant, can believe someone put that up
Yes indeed, R.T.E. was soooo cool when we was young uns. Still having said that, R.T.E. still kicks ass when see the shite that ITV has become.
I put up a simple smpte pattern with simulated noise so I would have a user icon. lol I like yours much better
Do ya remember the clock that used to be on before Anything Goes on a saturday morning??
Yes. It is the same clock that they used seven days a week before transmission began.
f*ck, i remember that well!! seems pretty prehistoric now;-)
much better than the big band crap we had to put up with in england lol
What's the name of this song? I'm in love with it...
It is cool.

Ian Paisley didn't sign the Good Friday Agreement, he boycotted it.
zajebista muzyka :D
Someday the City won't shut down at night either.

What date is this broadcast from? Would it be the late 70s by any chance?
yes, really!
huh? wat yr is that from?
LMAO well you have a point..... RTE was pretty sad,
When exactly was this broadcast from?
@tubedougz the past is the past.
When RTE 1 didnt start transmission until 3pm in the afternoon in the early decades, how lazy was that you know.
RTE 1 was still only starting up at 3pm during the summer months until the early 1990's.
