    No one or nothing compares to the original Charlie Chan, Warner Oland. However, Ross Martin gives it a unique twist.
    What an underated actor!

    My personal favorite Ross Martin role is Baron Rolf von Stuppe in 1965's "The Great Race". Martin managed to be a menacing villain and demonstrated swordsmanship worthy of Errol Flynn or Basil Rathbone while not quite overshadowing the comedy.
    Like a lot of 70s shows this one slipped under my radar. So far I like how Martin's Chan acts with kids, something both Oland and Toler were great at. And since Chan is supposed to be from Honolulu, kudos for putting him in an Aloha shirt; they were already around in the 1930s, but this the first Chan I've seen in one.

    Ross Martin made a few slipups on the Chinese accent and on the way Charlie Chan spoke reflected in the way Chan said things. Such as his way of throwing in Chinese proverbs for different situations, and Chan's invariable remark after someone he was questioning gave him valuable information. It was always, "thank you so much". I think that the more Chan movies Ross Martin made, the better he would have gotten in acting as Chan. Rivaling the last two of the three actors who played him. This was the only movie I could find on RUclips where Ross Martin played Chan.

    First saw this in the 70s with my mom who got mad that a Chinese man wasn't cast. They almost never casted actual Native Americans back then either.

    • @janegarner9169
      @janegarner9169 5 лет назад +2

      Yes, and they usually had the Native Am. characters (played by non-natives) speak in one syllable grunts or otherwise acting very stupid & very bloodthirsty.
      I can understand if an actor plays a character of a different ancestry/culture part of the time, as long as the character isn't portrayed in a racist way. After all, it's the job of actors to play characters unlike themselves. But when other actors who are of that group are available & often going without work, that's different. And worse, when the films show 'minority' characters in racist ways, there's no excuse.
      The older Charlie Chan movies were much better made than this one, which is awful, and though it would've been preferable to have a Chinese actor playing Chan, at least the Chan character wasn't made to look dumb. The films contain lots of stereotypes but Chan was still an admirable character, which for '30s-'40s America was a step forward. In the '70s, no excuse: those involved in making the film knew that it offended many Chinese-Americans to have a Euro-Am. man play a Chinese, but they apparently didn't care.

    • @WJack97224
      @WJack97224 5 лет назад

      @@@janegarner9169, the older movies were not constrained by prejudice, i.e. they were not censored and so they were more accurate and true to reality. The condemnation of racism is then approval of censorship. However, Jehovah God gave us free will, freedom to choose, and thus any time political government denies us our free will it is evidence that politicians and many of their supporters and bureaucrats are not Christians but Satan's acolytes.

    • @mbp7060

    I won't say that this is a good Charlie Chan mystery, but it is still a pretty good mystery. Just think of Ross Martin playing an imposter, Artemis Gordon's grandson in disguise, a "Charlie Chang", if you will, instead of the actual Charlie Chan.

    All the negative comments are unwarranted. I know the history of the character, the movies & the real Honolulu policeman who was the inspiration for Charle Chan.
    I am watching it to watch Ross Martin, a great character actor who died too soon.
    Not to criticize the teleplay or why no Asian actor did the role.
    However, people forget that the early films were of a different time where having a non Asian in the role was acceptable.
    And producers use name actors & Ross had a track record.

Anyone who doesn't like it is free to take a pass. Or perhaps they can finance a new Charlie Chan movie with Chinese actors for Chans. But they probably find it much easier to just complain about what others try to do....

    Like so many projects in that era, - embarrassing! As though they did not feel it worth it, Poor tech things, etc., just awful- incompetent , thoughtless, and worse - A remake of Charlie Chan should be done - and today it would probably be high art, too. We should petition for it.

    • @ellesmithfagan
      @ellesmithfagan 6 лет назад +3

      It should not be too impossible to work around the Asian and Black stereotyping, and just make supergreat stories of it all. The author of the books designed Chan as a foil to bad stereotype - Asians were badguys till Chan..."Biggers, who disliked the Yellow Peril stereotypes he found when he came to California,[3] explicitly conceived of the character as an alternative: "Sinister and wicked Chinese are old stuff, but an amiable Chinese on the side of law and order has never been used."[4]"

    It was a mistake to cast Ross Martin as Charlie Chan. Ross was a good actor but he just was not close to Warner Oland and Sidney Toler in portrayal of Charlie. I hope some actor will come along with the Warner Oland or Sidney Toler styles and many episodes of Charlie Chan with settings in the 1930s and 40s can be produced.

      @@@davidvincent3948, It will not happen as the political correctness, prejudiced, hate mongering commie/socialist Democrats will not permit the use of the terminology of the bygone eras. We once enjoyed free will, freedom to choose, as a gift from Jehovah God, but since Satan's acolytes have infected and infested politics, especially the Democratic Party, we are just a pack of stinkin' slaves on the plantation state run by masters/politicians and their hired overseers/judges/enforcers. Not worth watching and a slap in the face to the great actors that played in the original movies! Could have been MUCH MUCH better if they had made him look 80 years old and they needed an actor with a much deeper voice. Of course the original Charlie was not Asian, in fact if I am not mistaken he was American and worked hard at developing his character based off the sound of a Chinese coolie voice. I have been a fan of the Charlie Chan movies since I was born - only then they were new. This is a disgrace to the series.

      He stared in a A LOT of other TV guest and film parts. He was considered a 'character' actor in those days and only played secondary or lesser rolls. He was also a voice, radio and stage actor. If you go to the movie database IMDb you will see he did many acting parts from 1951. I think he was happy with what he was doing. He died in 1981 of a heart attack at 61.
      ...........and he could speak 7 different languages. He also suffered a near fatal heart attack in 1968, that weakened his heart, and some TV people / directors were then afraid to hire him in any leading rolls (per info on IMDb). But he still continued to act.

      Of course. They didn't want them to be out of step with the rest of the movie.

    Yes, naturally it's pretty bad, nothing at all like the great Toler and Oland ones.
    Hollywood has a way of making crappy remakes of classics, especially with hokey dialog and cheesy disguises. I had to stop it from time to time, as is was impossible to watch all the way through without having a barf bag handy
    It did get better as it went along, and one good thing, - his son was not a goofball like in the other movies.

    Overall decent film, but why the white actor as Chan? This could have been the best time to reboot the character without the yellowface.

    This was brutally awful. Ross Martin couldn't have been worse if he tried. Do not waste your time, I lost 30 minutes of my life before I finally had to turn it off. Stick to the B/W classics with Warner Oland & Sydney Toler (even Oland was better than Toler) Dont remember who took over the role after Toland died but he was pretty awful. And did you know that Son #1 in the Oland movies went on to play the mentor in the TV show "Kung Fu"?

      Karen Of course. Everyone knows Keye Luke was in Kung Fu. I like how you mixed Oland and Toler into one - Toland. Funny.

    Even for the seventies Hollywood, it~s very sad to see a white guy playing a chinese.
