Crazy to think a AC-130 left its transponder on and did its thing live for ATC/nerds like me on Flightradar24 to watch. Imagine something stalking you for 2 hours, waits till you walk to home base, then turns you and your warehouse into vapor.

The best thing about the AC-47 was that it was built on a hunch from like an LT in Florida (the LT was stationed at Eglin AFB at the time). So you could say that the AC-130 was the brain child of a Florida man.

The MW2(022) "AC-130" is pretty much a cursed hybrid of an Embraer C-390 (the forward 3/4 of the fuselage and the wing angles) and a C-130 (the rear-most 1/4 part of the fuselage and its length along with the engines) with random winglets slammed on there for no apparent reason. And, a clear "yes" that it was done to avoid copyright, as with everything else in CoD nowadays.
I always thought it looked ugly and really hated the "missile 105mm" in the game, not to also mention that everything was a "no-go" on the RoE. I prefer the CoD4 mission much more.

    • @jfv2312
      @jfv2312 2 месяца назад +5

Hm, I always thought they had taken the Airbus A-400 as a reference, but you're right, the Embraer is definitely closer, especially in the cockpit's shape. And yes, the missiles replacing the 105 is cursed as hell

It's funny how inconsistent the MW reboots are with the vehicle alterations. The Harrier and C-130 are hardly recognizable, the MH-53 and the SU-25 are somewhat modified, and the A-10 and Apache are completely unaltered

I was one of the AFSOC’s AC-130 weapon system managers from 2021 - early 2024.
The AC-130J is the first variant where the propellant was intentionally directed out so the aircrew were safer. The additional pylon and tube mounted weapons that augment the 30mm and 105mm is called the Precision Strike Package, which was first used on the AC-130W as a test bed for what would become the AC-130J.

I’ve played a mobile game where you’re the gunner in an AC-130; Zombie Gunship Survival. It’s pretty fun.
It’s notable in that, while your own troops show up bright white on the FLIR you see all the missions through, the zombies show up black, as they don’t have any body heat. I think that’s a cool touch. It certainly makes IFF a lot easier.
The actual game has you providing covering fire for a squad of your men as they scavenge supply depots after the zombie apocalypse. There are spawn points for zombies to come from, and you have to defend your team until they loot all the objectives and get picked up by a black hawk to extract. Back at base, you see what your team found and upgrade your weapons. You can change your loadout, and there are lots of different weapons, half of which have never actually been mounted to a C-130 and have no business sticking out the side of one. Things like a sniper rifle mounted to the gimbal, or rocket pods. Overall, fun game, good way to pass the time. Good AC-130 in a game.
It is a mobile game, so lots of monetization, but it’s not too bad. It‘a all optional, and it stays out of the way of you playing the game. Stuff like buying crates, or “watch an ad to skip this build timer.”

We got to talk to an ex-gunner on an AC130 with my gaming buddies during a session and he told us the reason why they get so sick is because of lead poisoning. He said the environment inside the plane would pretty much require everyone in the back to wear some form of gas masks. When I asked why the military didn't do it, he said something like "Because the military cares about us very much". He said headaches were pretty common among his crew and that they all kind of accepted that they will get cancer at some point in their future.

  • @yomaster12345
    @yomaster12345 2 месяца назад +12

the unfortunate thing about the AC-130 is there is a high rate of cancer in the crew because they do not have proper protective wear for the high lead and other heavy metal content in the air from firing those guns.

The 2015 mishap is actually used in a law of war cbt we have to do in the air force. From how the cbt explains it, it seems like they were told a building description, and the hospital matched it but was close to the actual target and I think there is audio in it that sounds like the crew wasn't absolutely sure if it was the correct building.

Member of the US Air Force here. My Fundies(basic aircraft information) instructor at Sheppard AFB was a AC-130 Crew Chief. On his desk he had a I believe 105mm shell. Told us a story of a haunted AC-130 called Timmy that was used during the Vietnam war but now is decommissioned and at the bone yard. Apparently Crew Chiefs if ever working on that specific plane were either injured or even killed. So people tended to avoid the aircraft and dreaded taking off parts on it.

Just a bit of a tidbit in regards to the Huey, you're right that it had rockets and guns strapped to it however there were two distinct roles Slicks and Guns. The gunships were weapons only and did not (except for rare emergency evacs) carry troops. They were chock full of ammo and some had rockets as well as machine guns or miniguns and would act like planes doing strafe runs across the combat area while remaining in a higher orbit instead of hovering or low and slow movement for the most part.
If you have an interest in aviation and or the vietnam war I highly recommend the books: low level hell, this is minuteman two-three and Gunship Pilot which are all fantastic reads as well as chickenhawk from a "slick" perspective of a draftee who did not want to be there.

great video, probably the most accurate vid on the gunship by a non-military affiliated channel. although at 1:31 those are just regular ol' c130s, not gunships.
other than that, just a couple small things: at 10:00 you mention the PGM loadout. the W models were the first to add PGMs, and the J models actually carry 4x hellfires or gbu-39 sdb's on each wing, with 10 tubes in the back that can launch agm-176's and gbu-69 small glide munitions. the gbu-44 isnt used.
also about 20 secs later you mention the crew complement, the J models dont use navigators or FEs anymore, they have 4x SMAs (special missions aviators), which are basically an aerial gunner that can also sorta kinda do FE and loadmaster things, with one sitting up front doing FE duties, one on the 30mm, and two on the 105mm, a CSO (combat systems officer) who does nav stuff up front but walks to the back to act as the second sensor operator during combat, a WSO (weapon systems officer) who sits full time in the back as the primary sensor operator, and 2 pilots, one of whom is the aircraft commander and one of whom is the co-pilot in the right seat.
as for the gaming models, none of them really look like the inside of the aircraft tbh. the arma one is probably the best. the COD one is pretty terrible despite having the best graphics. if you watch the cutscene again, theres two 105mm guns back there, one front and one aft, despite the aircraft in the game not having a 105mm at all lol. also the computer station in the middle of the aircraft is facing the wrong way, in the real aircraft the two guys sitting there are facing aircraft left not right.
also, cod does the most annoying thing that basically every media representation of military flight does, and depicts the inside of the aircraft as so quiet you can talk to other people in the aircraft. it isnt an airliner! when the engines start up, you need hearing protection to even be in there, and the only way youre communicating with anyone is via intercom built into your headset or helmet. im not sure why 99% of movie directors and game devs misunderstand that.
at 33:45 you mention that the gunship has a better record than other aircraft as far as friendly fire. I'm not an expert, I just flew on the things for a little while, but if I had to make a guess as to why that is, it would be a few things. first, size of the crew. when you have 8 people who are all listening to radios and keeping track of things, youve got a better shot at catching mistakes. another thing is the quality of sensors and amount of info available to the crew. the gunship has crazy good sensors, and two people who's whole job while in combat is to look at the sensors, this kinda plays into the crew thing because if you have the cso, wso, and pilots all looking at a screen, everyone on board has a better idea of what the cameras are seeing and can catch mistakes or help each other identify things. the modern gunship also has a metric ton of situational awareness tools, like the pilots side-HUD, which can project the sensors current target on the ground in front of the pilot, so he can visually see exactly where the sensor operators in the back are looking, and then cross check that with the camera displays themselves which can be displayed elsewhere in the cockpit. theres also a ton more tools like moving maps, and the ability to essentially create and label video-game type floating markers on certain screens that are also populated into the sensor feed, so as the cameras look at something, theyll see an icon projected above certain locations telling them what those locations are. those markers can also be seen in the pilot's side-hud.
long story short, everyone on board who's involved with targeting has multiple ways of verifying where the sensors and guns are pointed at any given time, and multiple ways of keeping track of friendly and enemy positions.
final thing: i dont thing you mentioned it, but ill say it anyway. there's a common misconception that the guns are fixed in place on board the aircraft. this isn't true, they actually sit in electrically controlled mounts and can be aimed independently of the aircrafts attitude, within a certain amount. basically the left side of the plane doesnt have to point directly at the target, it just has to be sorta-kinda oriented that way within however many degrees and the computers can work out how to aim the mount so that the guns impact wherever the sensors are pointed.
    overall great vid!

hate to be that guy- but I feel like you might have missed 2-3 games in this list- granted they would be pretty easy to miss because technically speaking they aren't the first thing that come to mind- but are pretty much dedicated AC-130 games, although 2 of which are only available for mobile platforms- which I don't believe are even available anymore.
Zombie Gunship is (or was if you want to be sentimental), a fully fledged AC-130 game. it only had the FLIR sight, but unlike half of the games on this list the camera did actually pivot where you looked which- at the time I didn't think was very special- but considering it was an early mobile game originally released in 2011, very impressive in retrospect. The game did so many things incredibly well, like the ambience of the humming engines- the FLIR camera blurring when moving it, camera being shaky due to engine rotations and overall giving off a crispy yet satisfying to look at "low-res" look- the Pilot saying "good save" when you manage to save a human (being White-Hot because they aren't zombies) by utilizing the splash damage on your various weapons- weapon sound effects were punchy and felt really good- it did have the CoD gimmick of having different zoom states for different weapons but overall- the game was an incredibly engaging time killer- back when mobile games had effort be put into it and isn't the slop that it is now. even the free version was just fun to mess around with, protecting the bunker from the waves of zombies whilst letting humans in-
the game did have a silly spin-off called 'Zombie Gunship: Arcade' which was an off-shoot of flappy bird where the only way to keep your gunship in the air was to shoot the giant 105 at the zombies below you but avoid shooting/killing any humans in the undead crowd or crash the plane.
these two games were developed by Limbic but the last *official* entry was published by Flaregames- but it seems Limbic were still involved with some aspects of the game- but clearly priorities shifted at some point where the game became an entirely different kind of game from the original ZG.
But essentially "Zombie Gunship: Survival" (or ZG:S as I will call it) was an actual instalment in the franchise. ZG:S is honestly just a straigh down-grade of ZG. No Ambient engine hum- has some semblance of a soundtrack which (although not bad) honestly kills the entire mood- No FLIR "blur" as you move the camera- the camera is also butter smooth and doesn't have a slight shake to it- it's also crystal clear. The game also added some really wackass features like base-building, which- sure it was neat to protect your base from hordes of zombies occasionally but wasn't really something you'd look in an "AC-130 game" let alone a 'Zombie Gunship' game- I don't remember Zombie Gunship having much of a story, but from contextual cues not all of the world went to shit- gov- holdouts and bunkers were a thing and that was kind of the main thing you were protecting in the OG ZG games whilst also saving live people which atleast gave the impression that though desperate the situation wasn't in total shit- not to mention you were flying an actual AC-130 Gunship with real-life complement of it's weapons- unlike in ZG:S where you could basically pick and choose what you wanted to take with you- if that hole "world gone to shit- and we manage to live like nomads in this VALUABLE AND HIGH-TECH MILITARY PIECE OF EQUIPMENT WITH SPECIFIC REPLACEMENT PARTS TO OPERATE EFFECTIVELY THAT AREN'T USUALLY AVAILABLE IN RUN-DOWN WAREHOUSES" wasn't bad enough you also get the typical outrageously obvious Pay-2-Win schemes like lootboxes, where you can find either upgrades or new weapons either for your "ground team" or your Gunship- some of which are supposedly super high-tech which is hilarious considering the situation you find yourself in in ZG:S. the missions are also just boiled down to escort missions. "keep team safe going from Point A to Point B- Oh No zombies are surrounding team! quick shoot them down!- keep team safe from point B to Point A".
honestly- ZG:S was not a very good game and honestly doesn't really deserve the attention it gets considering how much better the original game was. ZG understood it was a mobile game and you'd only pick it up for a few minutes maybe half an hour before putting it back down again- but even then it knew how to make you feel like you were sitting in a gunship. ZG:S just misses all of those marks and is made worse by the fact that you can't get good weapons without shelling out a few dollars- which I believe is asking too much of you- especially for a free mobile game that has Ads in it. remember the time mobile games asked for 99 cents to remove ads permanently? man what happened-
there was another spinoff to ZG:S called 'Zombie Gunship: Revenant' but was mostly Flaregames's attempt at a gimmick with AR. Revenant doesn't feature an AC-130 though and has you pilot an AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter instead.
I hope someone else also remembers Zombie Gunship.

The game itself was designed for singleplayer it's amazing what this community can do. And yes you can go to space with your friends playing the same campaign even with mods

I have personally seen the crew on an AC-130J test the targeting optics during a transit flight. They were watching jetliners takeoff and land at an island airport in the Mediterranean while we were passing by and trying to guess these regional European airlines by their liveries.
If you ever see declassified footage from AC-130 targeting cameras or any other optics used for targeting, they often deliberately publish them in a lower quality than they actually are

The reason gunsips are probably so loved by boots on the ground is because how effective they are in ideal conditions. During veitnam NO village or hamlet under the protection of project gunship 1-3 were ever lost. Not to mention the moral effects of thousands of continuous tracer fire for hours

The Medal of Honor 2010 often features support for the AC-130. In all missions, you either look at it or point it with a laser. This is not accurate, but it seems that you control the guns in one. I fell in love with this plane because of this game, it looks super beautiful in it.
