Let's stop calling it a mass suicide. Enough people found with needle punctures to know that's not true. Too many people shot, too many kids not old enough to choose to die. This is so sad, dark and was an absolute tragedy. Some people in the comments make me sick and are the reason some of the people went there and wanted a better world. You type of people made them easy to manipulate 👌
It was a mass murder and a suicide. People were coerced into drinking the laced drink. In the end Jim Jones was even too cowardly to drink it himself. He died with a bullet in his brain. Only Jim Jones committed suicide that day.
+Let'sgetrightintothecripplingdeppression There was a speculation his nurse shot him but the official verdict on his autopsy report was said to be most likely suicide, due to the close contact bullet wound.
@em D: Precisely. Most of the adults (specifically, 83 out of the 100 that Leslie Mootoo was able to examine in the field, under grueling conditions) had fresh needle marks at the rear of the left shoulder blade. They did not die willingly.
+em D Let's stop calling ANY law "justice". ALL laws by ALL NATIONS are VIOLENT FORCE. So the ONLY thing worth discussing is whether that violent force is GREATER than or EQUAL to the harm/pain/suffering caused by the person that that violence is applied to.
What an awful burden, for a son to endure; knowing that his father was responsible for the death of so many. Hopefully he may find some closure soon, if he hasn't already.
That's scary. I recently left a large church in the Atlanta area that boasts of being the most racially diverse church in the country. The pastor is a powerful, charismatic speaker with a degree in psychology. I don't know if he uses that to control the members, but everyone seems to worship this man and his messages of social justice. BTW, this church also has a clinic and a school for the children. I listened to a message online last week and was shocked to hear the pastor saying that not everything in the Bible is from God! At that point, I knew I had made the right decision in leaving this godless place. I'm not expecting to hear that he served kool-aid to the members of his church, but in effect, he is already serving them a type of kool-aid by telling them that they should listen to him and not God's Word. I'm a firm believer that EVERY word in the Bible is God-breathed...as is stated in 2 Tim 3:16. If you're attending a church that doesn't believe that or is teaching something different from what God already said...LEAVE that place and find a church that believes and teaches the Bible.
Well, he is right. The Bible was picked apart and many books are missing from it. I am curious though. When he said that about the Bible, why did you want to leave?
Don't you think that God is able to preserve His Word? The Bible is not missing anything and it hasn't been "picked apart". If you believe that some parts of the Bible aren't from God, then you have to ask yourself...which parts? If I can bring any part of the bible into question, then all of it becomes questionable.
I was in Jr High when this happened. It was horrific. So hard to wrap your head around at adolescence. It impacted my life in ways I could have never imagined at the time.
@@lylealee9704 all you have to do is think of what happened that day in Jonestown and being a 12-13 year old seeing the photos, the video and the cover of time magazine. It was scarring. Even more scarring than watching people escaping Saigon years before.
@@lylealee9704 Seeing over 900 corpses neatly laid out in layers. Almost 300 were children. And the news and magazines had no problem publishing the bodies over and over again!
I first heard of this story a few years ago while I was in college. We watched the documentary in Sociology class. I read the book A Thousand Lives just sad.
It was close to a thousand people die some of them took the poison cyanide some of them were Force to take it some of them were shot killed if they didn't take it tragedy occasionally I go to church but I don't go to different churches
It really upsets me that, in my research at least, he started off as a seemingly great guy, but became one of the most evil human beings ever. My heart aches for the survivors. Seeing how they went from so happy to being murdered. Killing their children and watching their children get murdered. He was truly the worst kind of human being.
I believe he was aware of his evil streak early on in his 20s and he quite possibly thought he could control it but the drugs gave him comfort in letting it out
He didn't start off great, from the beginning he sought to control a large amount of people. He wanted power, he wanted to hurt people. People that grew up with him say he was odd and killed animals as a child, then as a young adult he abused patients in a hospital he worked at. He was never a good person. All of the stories of him being a "good person" came from Jim himself, and therefore cannot be taken as truth.
I was just listening to a book about the beginning of it as personally by the sounds of it, his mother was no better as she was just as crazy as he was. Kept on filling his head with the idea that he was special that he was meant to do special things.
Despite his apparent initial good intentions, Jim Jones became corrupted by his need for, and his love of power - the drugs he took didn't help either !
Her name is Hyacinth Thrash. She actually fell asleep. I don't think she was ever interviewed on video, but there is a memoir of her life called "The Onliest One Alive."
I find that story fascinating, as well as the few others who survived. The elderly lady who hid under the bed woke up saw nearly everybody dead. However, she claimed that there were people who were alive and gave her a sandwich. Either she was delusional or there's more to the story than we are being told.
@@isidoraveronica Her book is a little difficult to find but well worth the effort. She and her sister Zippy were with Jim Jones from the days in Indianapolis. Zippy died in Jonestown.
It is sad to know that people like Jim used the hunger of people to somewhat belong to something that would create for them a perfect world. Believing that something is real and good. People would like to believe that and he took advantage of it
“Jim Jones could not kill 900 people by himself.” True. The inner circle executed most of his work. He was merely the mouth piece and the scapegoat. He was the justification for other people’s actions. He knew this. He had guards to do his shooting and he had mistresses to administer the potion and poison injections in the end. The very last mistress to die was rumored to kill Jim by gun shoot. Not even he could commit his ideology on himself. He needed someone else to do it. He brainwashed them and then they took it further than it was meant to go. He created a monster and he begged for that monster to kill everyone.
Avatar007. I haven't seen him in 12 years. The funny thing is is that I now work with his mother who is about as ignorant as a glass jar. I don't think she has much to do with her kids.
"I've got to destroy this paper idol!" In one sermon, Jones said that, "You're gonna help yourself, or you'll get no help! There's only one hope of glory; that's within you! Nobody's gonna come out of the sky! There's no heaven up there! We'll have to make heaven down here!"
I saw this other documentary where this women said she went to school with Jones, that she was in the first grade with him, and her brothers would go over to his house to play. She said that he was a very odd child, obsessed with religion and death. Her brothers told her that he would hold fake funerals for animals. Told her that they’d been to one for a cat. She also heard from another person that they saw him kill the cat. This man was a sociopath from the beginning. He never changed, because he was never good in the first place. It was all a front. Until it wasn’t.
The parents were lost..which lead those innocent children screaming and crying to thier deaths..Once the congressman was murdered bit was over😕why couldn't he just been good all the way through his soul changed.. completely a predator..how many did he himself violent 😥
In the beginning, when Jones was still a teenage street preacher without a congregation of his own, he forged connections with a Richmond, Indiana police officer named Dan Mitrione. In 1960, Mitrione became an undercover CIA operative and was dispatched to Brazil; Jones followed, bringing his entire family with him. In the town of Belo Horizonte he was actually outed as a spook by the local newspaper. (Mitrione, still a CIA operative, was assassinated in Uruguay in 1970.) Jones's misadventures in South America began long before Jonestown. So when the question "Who was Jim Jones?" is posed by a mass media outlet that omits crucial sections of the historical record, it is posed dishonestly. What happened at Jonestown had nothing to do with Jones's mother or the Pentecostal Church, and Jones *never* had good intentions.
@@rafaelasabchucalovato9439 RUclips hates it when I post links, but in Part 3 of Jim Hougan's essay "Jim Jones, Dan Mitrione and the Peoples Temple," there are some fascinating details about Jones's time in Brazil.

Don't praise a predator in any way who forced vulnerable people to get suicide. If he got a good heart this would never happen to those people, and it's a fact. He is just a covert narcissist.
@@joelm4847 I've read nearly everything there is to read about it. There are alot of books, publications and websites. The story is, as I understand it, that in 1961 Jones was admitted to Methodist Hospital and was, by mistake, placed in a black ward. This was because he had a black personal physician. When the mistake was realized, he refused to be moved. That started it. By the way, I was born at Methodist Hospital...lol. He was actually, at one time, head of the Indianapolis Human Rights Commission. There are many sources you can go to. For one, indianahistory.org. There's one article in particular "Countdown to Armageddon, The Reverend Jim Jones and Indiana". It kind of outlines the whole thing and it's a pretty quick read.
Understanding the history of the times it's easy to see how the victims got caught up in this. Some people saw red flags early on and left the People's Temple and others realized the mistake after moving to Guyana. Every time they air a new documentary on this tragedy it's always hard to watch especially because of the little children. On that day I wish the men or women could have rose up and fought to the end. Attempted to overpower the guards. Grabbed a gun. Something. At that point, they had nothing to lose, but the fear must have been paralyzing.
He took advantage on the weak .. people that had problems .. people who have fear .. at first everything is wonderful.. but after he shows he true colors..
Well, we tested "democratic socialism" in our country for one year 1968. And democracy and socialism can not be in the same regime together. Then Soviets occupied us
Christianity and Socialism are polar opposites... The Bible says "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat." Socialism says .. "let those who vote Democrat take that of those who work".
Jim Jones was a socialist. It was a socialist cult. Did you not watch the video ? All socialism is a cult. A charismatic leader makes an illogical / impossible promise and the idiots follow them. Which is basically the best way to sum up the Democrat party.
It was not socialism to that drove Jim Jones to madness. He was a sick fellow regardless of what dogma he follows. There are many maniacs in US history who followed other discourses and came up with their own shit anyway.
Tobias Forge - you are full of 💩 on socialism, you are just pushing your skewed “Christian” views. If what you said about Dems were true there would be 50%+ of the population not working. Quit spewing your hateful bullshit. The democratic theme is that EVERYONE should pay equal taxes, for example, 25% (I’m just putting a number out there), 45 lowered what was termed the “corporate tax” from 30% or 35% to 15%. The reality is that corporations were paying on average 18%. What was your tax burden? Mine was much higher than 18%. I haven’t seen any new jobs because of it, but some corporate fat cats have taken home some nice bonuses because of it. So before you start to try and belittle the side you don’t agree with, get your facts lined up because you are looking quite foolish otherwise.
The Guyanese government sold land near the boarder to the People's Temple dirt cheap because Guyana was having a boarder dispute with Venezuela that was on the verge of breaking out into a war, and they felt that having a village of Americans in the disputed region would make Venezuela think twice about invading.
I think at the beginning he actually had great ideas, to see those kids and adults, whites and blacks all together back in those years, its actually amazing..it was beautiful. Then something bad happened into his mind..
This is by far the most and if not the Darkest episode special of "Turth & Lies", Seen and rewatching all this footage of The Peoples Temple and especially. Jim Jones himself.
My dad (44), Uncle (47) and grandmother (68) are all still alive. They were all born and raised in Guyana, I find it hard to believe they were born during this time (Something funny is that my brother was born on November 18th but not in 1978)
While I appreciate Stephan Jones sharing his thoughts and feelings on this video, one has to know that he had it a whole lot easier than 99 percent of the folks enslaved in that hell hole. Plus the fact that his mother made sure he was away playing basketball during the congressman's visit. These poor people were fooled and brainwashed and then held captive in a stinking jungle....Held by fear, hunger, Jones's daily brainwashing and the lost hope and apathy that all of that contributed to. To imply that the victims were somehow mad ( 2:39 ...."Jim Jones by himself could not kill 913 people....) .... is to imply they were complicit in their own deaths. No, Jim Jones was the mad and selfish one who spread his sickness unto the very ones who trusted and supported him.
I feel so sorry for Stephen Jones, Jim Jr., and basically all of the "rainbow family" Jim Sr. and his wife built. To say their feelings have got to be incredibly complex is putting it mildly. It also sucks that one of the people who was ahead of his time where it came to racial integration was also so evil in every other way.
I find Jim Jones to be the most fascinating cult leader. It's amazing how he held so much power over so many people. He had over 1,000 followers who thought he was the most wonderful, caring and loving person in the world. Sadly he was not. By the time his congregation discovered who and what he really was it was too late.
I watched the jonestown paradise lost and jim jones and the peoples temple as many times and some others too. Including the jonestown massacre on RUclips and the demolished timelines video of returning to jonestown was the wildest of the greatest adventures in dangerous place on earth in jonestown Guyana( November 18, 1978).
Stephan seems like such a kind, gentle soul. I cried when I saw him cry when he went back to Jonestown. Would it be wrong to say how handsome he is as well? Jim Jones was a very good looking guy with some really great ideas, but sadly paranoia, greed, and drugs got in the way of what could have been a beautiful thing. Very sad.
Why in the hell do people think that JJ was handsome, he was ugly and evil... he was a monster. Now I will agree his son is gorgeous though. JJ was not anywhere near handsome.. he was if anything homely.
+Shannon Elaine A lot of people agree Jim Jones was a good looking man! He did bad things but that has nothing to do with his appearance. Even his son Stephan who doesn't like him very much said he was handsome.
@@shannonsmith1522 well it's OK, we've all got our own opinions of what we consider good looking. I am definitely not alone in that thought. He certainly did lose that when he got older though. @@KattyKoo-g5n I don't know when you are referring to Jim Jones losing his good looks, but I don't think he lost them at all. He was still just as handsome in the late 70s and at the end of his life. I know of a lot of other people who agree with that.
@@ishrendon6435 Throughout his career he never practiced what he preached as in his own congregation, only one black person was on his board. I think it was to be contrarian as his whole approach was to feel superior to others and he never truly had compassion towards anyone including his wife who he never listened to but forced his own views on her.
"His eyes would just burn through those sunglasses". It's just ashame that Jim will always be remembered for that day in November 18, 1978, and not for too much of anything else. This is the case for so many men seeking power. It only leads to destruction...SBN RESONATE
I can't help but wonder what caused Jim Jones to "flip" as he did. He took what would be an otherwise glorious gift of God, and not only squandered it, but used it to commit murder. I consider it a mass premeditated murder. It's bad enough to murder someone who has done evil to you or your family, but these were people who loved him, and would have followed him to hell with a pick and shovel. Sad to think some of them actually did, because they were influenced to do so. Nothing but pure evil.
The saddest (and most personally frightening) thing about this story is how much I also believe in what this monster was saying. Losing racial profiling, building a better society, helping the victims of unfair treatment… Even now, I can understand why people believed in the fight to eradicate these things from our society. It’s really hard to accept, but I can see this kind of stuff happening nowadays. People just want to be loved and Jim made these poor folks feel that they would be valued AND loved. Who doesn’t want that? And I know that some aren’t ready to accept it, but I wish nothing but good for Mr. Stephan Jones. He’s warning everyone to be careful. This could, very easily, happen again. Finally, let’s not forget the desperate souls who were silenced and killed in Guyana. They were people like all of us. They were good people. R.I.P., everyone who was erased by this “man” just because you all wanted to matter. You all did and you still do. 🙏🏽

So many people like post malone and lana del Rey's put this man in their song. None of them were agreeing or glorifying him, they were all judging and criticising him.
Actually, we don't know the reason why he did it. It would be good if he explain it to us but even if he doesn't, that doesn't mean there is bad intentions. We just don't know, everything we can do now is just read the speech, read the lyrics and try to understand.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil." (PROVERBS 3:5-7, NKJV) Had Jim Jones lived by these pure words of God, he would have not ended his life tragically.

What's sad is how he was treated like a criminal at the time for his father's actions
He brought his family to see Jonestown. He was brave enough to return.
Glad u didn't drink their koolaid
That's a real pastor right there, he's enlightened and knows the truth

It really upsets me that, in my research at least, he started off as a seemingly great guy, but became one of the most evil human beings ever. My heart aches for the survivors. Seeing how they went from so happy to being murdered. Killing their children and watching their children get murdered. He was truly the worst kind of human being.
I believe he was aware of his evil streak early on in his 20s and he quite possibly thought he could control it but the drugs gave him comfort in letting it out
It’s happening now. See it.
The Devil incarnate. Beware of false prophets who are like wolves in sheeps clothing.
Despite his apparent initial good intentions, Jim Jones became corrupted by his need for, and his love of power - the drugs he took didn't help either !
Exactly !! He just used religion to reel them into his sickness !!
Jones was always a devil. He always wanted to run a mind control cult. He felt he was made for that job.
When Jim moved to Jonestown, he became a dictator. Day by day he inculcated paranoia in the people.
He was doing that before they even moved full time to CA. It's just when they got to the jungle, their options were gone.
Funny they didnt mention his heroine use.
a heroine is a female hero. did you mean heroin? cuz thats funny as is...
It's only the first part of the documentary
It mentions drug use on the later parts, but not the heroin.

He didn’t use heroin. Mostly speed
I want to see an interview with that old lady that was hiding under the bed when the sirens to start the suicide sounded!
Her name is Hyacinth Thrash. She actually fell asleep. I don't think she was ever interviewed on video, but there is a memoir of her life called "The Onliest One Alive."
Ismail thank you
I find that story fascinating, as well as the few others who survived.

“Jim Jones could not kill 900 people by himself.”
True.
I onced worked in a 1st grade classroom where one of the young boys actually looked like a young Jim Jones and just as intelligent. He spooked me.

"I've got to destroy this paper idol!" In one sermon, Jones said that, "You're gonna help yourself, or you'll get no help! There's only one hope of glory; that's within you! Nobody's gonna come out of the sky! There's no heaven up there! We'll have to make heaven down here!"
The greatest quote of all time... Spoken by a deranged madman. :/
Jones was capable of saying intelligent things, he also just happened to be a.... flawed human being.
That was a very brilliant statement by him
I saw this other documentary where this women said she went to school with Jones, that she was in the first grade with him, and her brothers would go over to his house to play. Until it wasn’t.

ruclips.net/video/jMt3nKd-QZY/видео.html Jim Jones and his followers singing the Communist National Anthem.
That's a interesting chunk of info, taking into consideration I'm Brazilian and we had never heard of it.

Good People die when others fail to intervene
never underestimate the power of brain washing by a very charismatic and manipulative person

Well, we tested "democratic socialism" in our country for one year 1968. And democracy and socialism can not be in the same regime together. Then Soviets occupied us
I'm really surprised ABC did a story on the dangers of socialism and it's cult leaders. All of todays youth needs to watch these videos.
Socialism has nothing to do with cults.

I actually get an eeeie feeling from him… like he’s leaving a lot out, like he has a different and scary side to him…
I feel so sorry for Stephen Jones, Jim Jr., and basically all of the "rainbow family" Jim Sr. and his wife built. To say their feelings have got to be incredibly complex is putting it mildly. It also sucks that one of the people who was ahead of his time where it came to racial integration was also so evil in every other way.
Shades as windows to the soul!
I find Jim Jones to be the most fascinating cult leader. It's amazing how he held so much power over so many people. He had over 1,000 followers who thought he was the most wonderful, caring and loving person in the world. Sadly he was not. By the time his congregation discovered who and what he really was it was too late.
I can’t imagine the guilt and sorrow that Stephan Jones carries because of his psychotic father. I hope he can find peace.

Nothing but pure evil.
he didnt flip...if you research the truth about him before Guyana...he was always a devil...even as a child.
there is a strange and fascinating hole that will always surround your understanding of this incident until you acknowledge it was a government psyop.
