- Suzanne Watson, a former pastor of an Episcopal congregation in the San Diego area, received her AARP card and Wake Forest School of Medicine acceptance letter in the same week.
At the time of her admission, Watson was a single mother of four-her husband committed suicide after suffering depression in silence for years. Watson, now 54 and a fourth-year medical student, is scheduled to graduate in May and start her psychiatry residency in July.
She hopes to help others find successful treatment for depression and prevent loved ones from having to endure the loss and pain she and her children experienced.

stories like these made me not regret getting a degree in my 40s and now trying to finish my MA. thank you.
Congratulations! I am 40 next month and have finally found the courage that I lacked 20 years ago to admit to my working class peers that I have always dreamt of becoming a doctor. I am using my redundancy package to pay for a medical course. I am scared as I have a 9 month old baby but I hope she will one day be proud of me!
Congratulations on realizing your dreams. Your daughter will be proud of you regardless...Many blessings!
She's really gonna make a great doctor, you can tell by how calm she is
There are 100 year old doctors still practicing, so she's got a long career ahead of her.
This gives me such hope. I am a chaplain and in my mid-40s. My spouse is encouraging me to apply next cycle.
I am 33 and I am a clinical psychologist and I am going to apply for medicine this year. So scared but also so exited.

Wow this is so inspirational. I came across this channel by accident and l am so glad l did. Been wanting to go and study medicine at 32 and l felt l was too old. I guess there is no such thing as too old. Definitely going for that career change
Can I just say thank you. What an inspiration. I’m in my 40’s and after years in military and aviation I really want to pursue this dream. My family are from NC and your school is totally on my radar! What a wonderful and hopeful moment realizing programs don’t discriminate and my dream can potentially become reality
Well done ma'am for sure it's a good challenge. At 40 I wonna go to medical school n pick it from where I left it while I was 20.

I would love to hear more of your story. Did you need to retake courses to satisfy the prerequisites for medical school. How did you prepare for the MCAT? Since many schools require clinical hours how did you fulfill those? What you have shared thus far is very inspiring and encouraging. I wish you and your family the best in your personal and professional life.

wish she would have discussed more what it took to get the Med school, and less of her past job/why she chose her specialty/or the fact that she had kids at home more that one time. Tell and then move on to how you did it.
