  • Reginald (black) and Proximo (grey) are two cats who love being spoiled. And I am a human who loves spoiling them. After a trip to PetSmart I had fun assembling a random Halloween scratching post/house. I have only bought something similar once before and the minute Reginald jumped on it the thing collapsed so I was nervous that this was another that had a "normal cat" weight limit. My cats are huge. Proximo just turned 1 year old and is just massive (but hasn't been weighed yet) and Reginald, who will be 3 in November, was just weighed at the vet around 22 lbs. Maine Coon cats don't stop growing until 3-5 years of age. Being so big means most of their toys are dog toys and most of the cat trees I've tried out have been literally too small for them to use. Still, this was a fun day. Maine Coons are very playful and sociable so it doesn't matter what I bring home, they never disappoint in their curiosity and adorableness.

You know it's good if it can draw these scholars from their studies.

Every great scholar needs a respite every now and then to rest their sore eyes from so much reading and studying 📖

They seem to be taking inspiration from their surroundings and acting very measured and professorial! Love your guys, they’re so confident and sure of themselves. (And don’t seem to realize how entertaining they are!) 🇨🇦💕

They take things very seriously in their library 📚 and sometimes it’s hilarious 😂

Happy Halloween to you too! And yes, cuddling them while I’m reading in the library is the best thing ever.

2:22 Proximo looks soooo funny in this whole clip! 😹
2:25 all the way to 2:30 (and especially when he’s peering over the top and puts his shoulders back!) When he’s all stretched out he looks like some kind of cat-person hybrid - like someone literally wearing a fursuit, a theatrically exaggerated tail, and the little dark grey soles of his feet at the end of his long fluffy grey-white legs! 😸 And then 2:33-2:35 when he does his little jump 😻 I think that might be the most ridiculously magnificent tail I’ve seen.
Side-note (that gets longer than the main comment because I got carried away 🫢):
Do you trim/shave the backs of his pantaloons? Given his extreme floof in general I suddenly realised when he was standing sideways atop the Halloween house that this area of floof was remarkably restrained 😸
…and as someone with Maine Coons I fully understand! I think mine would be very upset if I used clippers on them because they’re very sensitive to noise/sounds in general, even though it would be the fastest option with the best and safest result.
My strategy isn’t ideal… I bought a pair of round-ended cat grooming scissors, which are very unpopular because they’re just not sharp enough, so every cut makes a sound and must be an unpleasant sensation to them as it slowly moves through the cutting motion (I can’t think how to describe that better, but if you’ve ever cut any kind of hair, or indeed, paper/card, with a pair of unsharp scissors, you’ll hopefully know what I mean!).
So I’ve repurposed a pair of human nail scissors, where the whole blade is curved, so the pointy ends are further away from them than the bit I’m cutting with (and I’m not cutting the hair short to start with!). They’re sharp and quick and quiet and much more acceptable from the feline perspective, but I’m very aware that they’re also *pointy* on the ends. I’m very careful with the positioning and will always make sure the curve/pointy bits are pointing away from them (and will use my other hand as a barrier between them and the pointy ends in case of any sudden movements), but I think I probably need to get some Sugru (mouldable silicone rubber stuff that hardens and should stick to metal) and add some little blobs onto the pointy bits to up the safety levels 🤔

Yeah I’ve tried a few methods to get the knots out of their fluff but it’s much easier for all of us to take them to a cat groomer near where we live. We shave them twice a year when the matting starts when they transition from summer coat to winter and vice versa. When I try to do it myself I have ZERO luck with Reginald (black cat) who is noble and moody lol Proximo (grey) bless his soul will just lay there and let me do whatever to his fur (I’ve used hair scissors many times). It’s a constant battle, these darned matts!
