I don't think this is common at all, but I've seen it happen before. One of my friends recently had this happen and had to keep asking different people at the company for things to do. They finally gave him a project to own and now he's happy, but he was kind of down about not feeling like part of the team for a few months.

How do you cope with a company hiring you then largely ignoring you? Is this common in software development?
