Scott, I saw the vids many years ago and of course almost cried due to needing to sell my basses instantly thereafter. But what's important here is this: he's an amazing soul of a human. I wrote him and he wrote back. He sent DVDs of his instructional vids to me with handwritten labels on them. Imagine the privilege of him being a quiet, sober HUMAN with a stranger. SO consistent with your great spirit, Scott, is this celebration of SR by you. You are a bright light.
Very helpful to see what a great pro like Sharay does when you put a piece of sheet music for the 1st time in front of him. What a great idea Scott of putting the chords on the screen as he plays, so we can play along and compare. Awesome!! That is exactly what I expect from a bass lesson. Thanks for that great video Scott. More of this pls!
@@xlaythe depends if you call experience just a number of years practicing or being consistent at the right place at the right time. playing in church helps a lot. Lots of cats that never played in church that are phenomenal. But when you look at Cory Henry these cats are playing with a feel that only faith can give. Gospel music is also a combo between several styles/genres. It opens up on the world. It depends on how curious and consistent we are to explore further not only music but life in general. Peace bro!
Really lovely to see Sharay expand upon the chord progression as the song progressed, moving from tip-toeing through the chords into a skillful dance in and around them and showing a ton of personality. Phenomenal playing!
Is it me or was Sharay already interacting with the guitar parts in the second and particular the third repetition? Amazing musician. And I don't mean his technical skills, which are top-level, but his amazing musicality.
What I love is how quickly he transitions from playing a basic background to really shaping something that intertwines with the rest of the music being played and adds unique flavor. It is awesome!
Dear Scott first of all i would like to thank you for the 1 week bass mini course(it was awesome!) you're a really great teacher but most importantly a good person and that shows through your videos you've made all these years. Secondly for a guy at my age (born in '78) it"s a privilege to watch a video like this one, because we didn't have access to all that information.Plus that it is really wonderful to see such a great bass player create something so tasteful on the fly.So the conclusion for those who pressed dislike is...DON'T BE UNGRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU'RE GIVEN!!!
Scott doing a pretty good job of keeping his composure. I’d be by the door ready to run out on the street after hearing the first 30 seconds of Sharay. Def a Hall of Fame bassist.
Wow! Sharpy is such a soulful player and he is so humble too. Thank you Scott. I have been following you since 2014. I am glad to have seen all your evolution(playing, house, location, basses, etc...). Take care!
Sharay played bass at a church that I engineer at in 2006 so I have known him 15 years. We also played a couple of sessions together. Sharay is the truth on bass.
Well, Sharay juts killed! He's an amazing musician and, I just enjoyed the groove and tone. I'd like to watch the great Abe Laboriel playing something. He is a legend and one of the greatest influences in the bass world. Thanks, Scott!
Ran across Sharay on RUclips about two years ago when I was trying to up my gospel chops. Absolutely electrifying player. Thank you so much for this video!
My homies and I saw the original VHS (or copy of) way before it hit youtube! Completely blew our minds, the playing + energy. Been a huge fan of his for 20+ years!! #legend
A real pro in action. Learning your theory makes you so much more fluent in any environment and allows improvising to be much easier. This guy’s playing is phenomenal.
Dude walks in eyeballs a piece of music he's never seen before talks a bit about is even polite enough to act slightly apprehensive. Then proceeds to make sweet love to it like it was a girlfriend from back in the day hitting all her spots. Damn I miss playing bass....
Above Sharay's incredible ability at bass playing, is his gentle voice....I could listen to this Cat talk all day about anything. I dont know man, but I kindda feel that his voice reflects the kind of person he is inside..that is 'Gentle' and 'kind'.
I would love to see a sit down interview thing with Rocco and Pino Palladino. Would be super interesting to watch how they both approach crafting their basslines
I love this! I find it really helpful and informative to watch people put their skills to work. It’s great to hear the process he goes through when he first looks at the piece.
First time I heard him is when i had the chance to play some music with him on a audition for making his band. This was a MTV show for p diddy. I can remember it like yesterday, me and him were locked and the one judge for the shows face went right to stank face!! Sharay didnt continue on the show because he knew the contract sucked and probably had a better gig lined up anyways. I made it to the house in la and then got kicked off the first challenge. It's so awesome to see him represent chicago all over the world. Keep up your great work sharay, the musicians of chicago are so proud of you and your ministry!!!!
One thing I like about your courses is that you go into the technicals of creating the actual bass guitar Sounds/Tones. Most tutors don't do that. Great work.
When we talk about ‘master’ of a craft… this… this is what that looks like. This is masterful playing. His attitude is so right too. Not hard to see why everyone and anyone has wanted to hire him to put bass on their work. He’s the guy. THE guy. The dude is a true blessing to music. A joy to witness.
Gentleman and a scholar. I love this dude. Had the privilege of sharing the stage with him last summer opening for The Funk Apostles... I've never danced so hard at a concert in my life. LOL just amazing.
What a killer tone... I usually like big and chunky in your face tones like clay gober or something similar, but his is so warm and articulate. Awesome!
a7sus4 wouldnt have a "three rubbing against the four" isnt that the whole point of a sus chord? That you are suspending the third in favor of the fourth? Meaning fourth instead of third? Isnt a7sus4 A D G (E) ?
@@youngevil353 He's better than me too, I just know some theory that maybe he doesn't I guess, or maybe he simply misspoke because he was being filmed and distracted by all that.
As I've stated elsewhere; Sharay is in another universe. The rest of us are trying to find it. His mastery of the tone of his instrument is light years beyond any human understanding. His subtle sub-plucking of chord tones above the root he's playing to highlight the main tone... I'm telling you. He's not from this realm. The amount of work you have to put in to achieve this is not outer worldly...it's extra-universal!
Thank you so much Scott, He is one of my favorites, what a MONSTER Bass Player!!!!!! He's so good, that even though I have seen the first video of him at least a half a dozen times, it always feels like the first time....I keep getting that same excitement, over and over!!!!!!
Absolutely amazing! There are a ton of things to praise here but what really struck me was Sharay's right hand thumb-and-index-finger technique. I've never seen that before. At first I was thinking, wow, how's he articulating those notes so quickly just with his thumb? Then I noticed his index finger. Very cool way to get that classic thumb sound but still play fast notes.
Nice... awesome to see how a pro works a new song. Goodness that would take weeks for me to pull something like that off. Just amazing! How about John Patitucci and Jimmy Haslip and Marcus Miller any of those guys will do...👍
Insane. I play by ear so I feel the music. But there's no way that I could ever -- EVER! -- read something for the first time and interpret it like that. Raw natural talent is an unfair thing. Genius!
I went to that church when I was in Chicago. Honestly there are tons of unknown bass beast all over the gospel scene.
Church musicians in general are some of the most talented around.
White church have whole different set of setlist
Sharay is incredible and seems like such a nice, humble guy.
Meet him at a Cory Henry’s concert. He is definitely one of the humblest guys around!
Theeeeeee humblest dude in the industry. Ridiculously professional. The truth all around.
@@sliverhandsonbasses Ditto, met him and Cory and they're both so nice!

Sharay Reed is one of the greatest bassists to walk this Earth. We are truly blessed to know him.

That is so amazing. Sharay's take is so perfect, absolutely no mistakes , no weak parts, better than flawless... inspired. I wish I could do that.
Sharay was the reason I picked up the bass and he is the reason I put it away lol for real
Lol

Very funny lol
Pick up that bass and learn from him:) Get back on it!!
Unlike many 5 string players, this guy knows how to use the B string beyond the extender range
Those were definitely "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" by D'Angelo chords lol! Such a tasteful progression.

Yup the whole first section of the verses... I figured notice the tease before the composer flipped it. 😃
Until that Chrono Trigger-like chord progression came in.
