There's a firearms/sniper saying "you shoot _through_ a window, never _from_ a window." Meaning, you don't stick your gun/arrow through the window and fire, you stand back and shoot from behind the window _through_ it. Not only does this disguise you, because you don't see a gun sticking out of a window, but it also provides ample coverage and allows you to pick your shots and fire more accurately because you can take your time. If you stand inside a window/merlon gap, chances are you'll be spotted and shot before you get your shot off. Just a good simple explanation of how crenelations, cover, and windows are used in combat with one simple phrase. "Shoot _through_ a window, never _from_ a window."

As an architect I have really grown fond of this channel. The way you describe and understand everything spacially-related in depth, makes me really watch the whole of your videos with my eyes and ears fully focused! Definitelly Subbed!
Agree. That was my first thought too, water. The mach. is on the outside seen by the countryside. Water stains there would reduce the glorious appaerance of the castle and the water would affect the whitewash. Less water on the shiny side reduces cost in keeping up grandeur.
That would make a lot of sense they certainly had better techniques that could be used to manage rainwater than just simply letting it run down the stonework, examples would include such as using wood or lead lined pipes or stone spouts to control and direct the water safely away from the walls. Not only can flowing water erode the stone but regularly damp stonework will suffer additional degradation as the damp will encourage the growth of moss that can degrade the stone and also get into cracks which is particularly problematic in regions that drop bellow freezing regularly at night in the winter months as freeze thaw cycles in cracks will result in significantly more rapid crack growth.
The “raised step” design is used today. I work in construction, and any walk way over 6 feet high has to have what we call a toe board around the edge. It helps keep you from accidentally stepping off the edge, and if you drop something, it won’t slide off the edge and fall.
I was watching The Dragon Prince on Netflix and they had head height merlons on the crenellations and functional machiciolations. I screamed, "MACHICIOLATIONS!" My wife, mom and sisters looked at me like I had two heads. My two year old said, "Mashicaton!" Raising her right.

It’s truly a testament to the intelligence of the people who are behind all these creations, regardless how old they are, who were able to carefully work out how all these features would work out for what they were creating. (most of the time.) I know people that don’t think history and the people of the past are all that important or impressive, a couple of them even seeing them as inferior and worse than modern day civilisation. Yet it’s these same people who’d helped shape things and the world to what it is today. Hell, just the fact that even in the Stone Age period, people already had a fundamental and incredible understanding of how everything worked, Corbeling (think that’s how it’s spelled, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.) being one of those ancient construction techniques. It’s truly amazing to see where we came from and how similar people were to us even in different time periods. Just my random thoughts and ramblings on history! 😁
Without the relativistic aspect to that statement you would be much closer to the truth. The people of the past indeed weren't stupid or particularly less intelligent than we are today. We are where we are at due to the accumulation of hundreds or (for some things) even thousands of years human effort. However, it is fair to say modern western society is objectively superior to any others past or present. In the entirety of human history.
Ancient civilizations literally knew the speed of light and many other impossible stuff based on what we are taught. We are actually primitive post disaster people compared to our advanced ancestors who had unlimited energy and weren't slaves to the govt. His-story is a lie

They can also serve as a countermeasure not for an invading army, but a small infiltration party. Those guys could sneak up to the base of the castle even with a clear view and bridge to deter a larger invasion force.
They’re also super expensive, and overspending on your weapons of war means you get fewer of them. Just like a 60 million dollar main battle tank is better than an 80 million dollar main battle tank if all else is equal, a 60 thousand livre castle is better than an 80 thousand livre castle. Hence why you’ll see the “all the machicoli all the time” castles primarily on representation-first castles. The Royal residences, the Ring Of Stone castles, that sort of thing. The defense-first castles will use them where needed.

Fun fact: The Blarney Stone, which all seem to be nominally aware of, even though that is only its common name, is kissed (for its gift of eloquence) by suspending oneself upside-down through a machicolation. One presumably had needed its gift of eloquence, for the apparent inability to have talked one's mates out of doing this on a dare. To see images online, one wonders why more people haven't killed themselves... even after handrails and a net of iron bars had been installed for safety only relatively recently.
Perhaps, today we think about being close to the arrow slits, because we think of how to better use a gun, not an arrow. If we see a slit to shoot through, our brain doesn't start figuring out ways of how to make the arrow pass through that slit, it just thinks, put a barrel of a machine gun into the slit and shoot targets.
Of course even modern soldiers are trained to shoot from back into the room so that the barrel of their rifle isn't poking out of the window (that is one thing that might give away your position).
@@18947ful its a little difficult to grab the barrel of a machine gun, which after a few minutes of continuous gunfure, would be at about 200+ degrees.
@@rickregina5053 First you'll have mostly Standard issue assault guns. And for that you have gloves. Also: when you fire for that long you have to Change the Barrel. ;) Otherwise you Just Ruin it.
@@18947ful In a defensive position of that nature, there will be at least two SAWs. Secondly, a SAW weighs about 20 pounds. Moveable, but not by much. Thirdly, there is a barrel lock on the barrel change handle, making it impossible to simply twist and pull out. Lastly, standard issue gloves will not protect you from the temperature of a machine gun barrel after several minutes of firing.
I never expected to say this but Shad, your videos made my Minecraft experience much better. Nothing is capable of getting through my gatehouses now Thank you
What always amazes me about medieval stone construction, and machicolations are a perfect example, is how they could calculate the amount of weight the corbels could support. And that's not to mention all the other calculations that would have to go into building a 30 foot high stone wall with battlements etc. which includes making it strong enough to be battered relentlessly and maintain it's integrity. The architects of that period were mind boggling in the amount of knowledge they possessed in order to not only make these amazing structures but to have built them so that many have survived to the present day. Thanks you for your awesome presentation on what is obviously your favorite subject. ( My weakness is for the "Wooden Walls" that protected Britiain, and the great floating castles of the Royal Navys' Ships of the Line.)
From an engineer's perspective, it takes detailed analysis and research to optimize to the "good enough" point. If you want to drastically overshoot and build your design to last for centuries (like castles and the DC-3 apparently) then good ol trial and error is an amazing analysis methodology.
@@L0stEngineer Or you could go with the Roman approach of 'if ten pounds of cement is good, a hundred pounds must be better.' I suspect their tendency to over-engineer *everything* stems from having such an unwieldy numbering system.

I’m only getting to this today b/c I’ve been sick for a few days but I just wanted to say I really enjoy your castle videos. Everytime I play a game or watch a program with a castle in it I find myself wondering “what Shad would say” about it. 🙂
I once saw a design of machicolations covered by heavy wooden shutters when not in use, with hinges on the crenelations side. When they switched from crenelations to the machicolations, they opened the shutters. The shutters leaned against the crenels, providing additional cover since those shutters were a bit taller than the crenels.

@@rafaelferes4362 depends on how often dragons attack, not that walls work well against something that flies.
If it's a fantasy world with dragons, then wizards would do very well to develop an anti-gravity spell, and put machicolations facing upwards so you could bombard an attacking dragon.
If there would be dragons, everyone would just build underground castles or use caves. Nothing works better against fire then 30m of rock and dirt

The step thing, could also have been a way to manage rainwater, to avoid having it fall down through the machiculations to the wall surface maybe
Why would that be a problem?
@@b1laxson Actually, reduces erosion, which is more important than grandeur
The “raised step” design is used today. I work in construction, and any walk way over 6 feet high has to have what we call a toe board around the edge. It helps keep you from accidentally stepping off the edge, and if you drop something, it won’t slide off the edge and fall.

It’s truly a testament to the intelligence of the people who are behind all these creations, regardless how old they are, who were able to carefully work out how all these features would work out for what they were creating. (most of the time.)
I know people that don’t think history and the people of the past are all that important or impressive, a couple of them even seeing them as inferior and worse than modern day civilisation.
DeathTDOW sorry if I butchered my statement slightly. 😅
Ancient civilizations literally knew the speed of light and many other impossible stuff based on what we are taught. We are actually primitive post disaster people compared to our advanced ancestors who had unlimited energy and weren't slaves to the govt. His-story is a lie

I've never seen this channel before. Came up in my feed. Seemed interesting, started watching. Pretty damn excited to see my favourite book series sitting on the shelf behind you!!! The wheel of time series is amazing!!
Just because you don't need them, doesn't mean you can't have them. They look awesome, intimidating, and provide extra defence.

I have absolutely no idea how I ended up watching this but it was really interesting. Thanks. Ive learnt something today that I would never in a million years have thought I was going to learn today. Life is great.
Of course even modern soldiers are trained to shoot from back into the room so that the barrel of their rifle isn't poking out of the window (that is one thing that might give away your position).
ah yes, i love sticking my gun in slits and shooting
@@18947ful its a little difficult to grab the barrel of a machine gun, which after a few minutes of continuous gunfure, would be at about 200+ degrees.

@@18947ful In a defensive position of that nature, there will be at least two SAWs. Secondly, a SAW weighs about 20 pounds. Moveable, but not by much.
@@brigidtheirish I would give your comment XCVII likes if I could.
