"Stay a child while you can be a child." This is my prayer for all the teens of the world trying too hard to be grown up. If you're lucky enough to still have a childhood, ENJOY IT!
Haha, I wish that was possible for me, atm the best thing that could happen would be being able to LEAVE and decide when I can put up with the stress that is my family situation
Meryl Streel nailed the part .She is a dramatic mezzo-soprano ,like me .Her high notes are on this part :Who out there could love you more than I ?What out there that I can not supply ?
I actually feel like this version of the witch genuinely love Rapunzel. She was just one of those parents who try to shield their children from being hurt and in turn hurts them even more.
+Kexylea The saddest part of this for me was always the fact that in the original story the witch was right for keeping Rapunzel shielded way because she ends up going mad after she finds out that her prince (like Cinderella's prince) has been cheating on her and she flings herself under the giantess' foot and kills herself. Afterwards the witch says "This is the world I meant. Couldn't you listen? Couldn't you stay content, safe behind walls, as I could not?" So yes, I really do feel that she did want to keep her safe from the dangers she knew were lurking. The movie opted for a much more happy end for Rapunzel.
Also, here she says "someone has to sheild you from the WORLD" and in Last Midnight "I'm the witch you're the WORLD" this proves that she want to really protect her and not end up a scapegoat like her.
666 likes lol. Also, she could've also done it because she's been mentally abused by her own mother? I mean she was cursed just from losing some (magic) beans which were technically stolen from her..
@@imtiredofmycontinuedexiste6324 Better than killing herself under a giantess' foot because her prince cheated on her. Letting her daughter have a friend is nice. The witch, however, was right. She's not good, she's not nice, she's just right.
Bernadette is gorgeous - no one can deny it - but I do love Meryl. I feel like I've grown up with her, since her 20's... she is a bit like a mother. Her voice is so reassuring, and full of emotion!
Very true. She puts her own touch to it, and it's a wonderful touch. Her voice is so strong yet gentle and really full of emotion! It's amazing. She can act and sing fantastically.

To the people comparing this to Tangled, Into The Woods came out way before that movie, especially well before 'Mother Knows Best'. If you need proof, look up the Original Broadway Musical. To add to that, the Mother's are basically the same, except for the fact that in Into The Woods, the witch actually loved Rapunzel, unlike the evil bitch in Tangled. They are the same tale, sure, but the songs hold two completely different emotions. Mother Knows Best was the greed in that witch-bitch that wanted to keep her daughter locked up, in Into The Woods, however, the witch actually keeps Rapunzel in that tower for protection. I love the song, and Meryl will most certainly blow this out of the water with her amazing talents, and Tangled was a spectacular movie as well... but Stay With Me is most definitely not a song to compare with.
One of the most magical, tragic parts of the movie. I was utterly captivated. The moment when the theatre is completely still and you can feel the music flowing through the air. It takes talent to be able to demand silence from your audience, solely because of your performance. I love those rare moments and this scene provided that. Congratulations on your amazing work in this film Meryl Streep!
Check out ALICE AT THE PALACE and the end of POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE. Somewhere here on RUclips, there's a video of numerous singing performances of hers, which are lovely.
Thom C You're right. I felt like she did a good job on that, although the songs were more pop, less suited to her voice and strengths, and, for an actress trying to actually 'say' and mean the lyrics, as dialog (or monolog, or anything with substantive meaning), they're problematic, given their relatively generic nature and odd intonation and diction. So, overall, though I think she gave her all and did the best that could be done with all the material in the movie (not just songs), I don't think it's among the best examples to demonstrate her abilities and artistry.
Bernadette Peters and Meryl Streep are on the same level as far as talent, vocal ability, and legend status. Bernadette is the Meryl Streep of stage, Meryl Streep is the Bernadette Peters of film.
I just love how this really fits well with teenagers and their parents out here, "who out there could love you more than i, ... Stay a child while you can be a child." These cut deep.
Watching this scene in the movie theatre made me want to cry, especially since my mom was sitting near my seat. Flashbacks of all the things I had done in the past that made her disappointed and sad flashed through my mind like lightning and my heart was being crushed emotionally. In that one scene, it made me reflect on everything I done in the past that had disappointed my mom and the guilt built up inside that leaked out in the form of tears, I almost wanted to hug my mom and just cry in her arms right then and there as a way of telling her "I'm sorry" Stay at home Mom is home Who could love you more than mother? Stay with her Stay a child while you can be a child With her No matter how grown you are, you are still momma's little boy/girl. Stay her child and show your appreciation while you still can with her
This was a very emotional piece. Meryl Streep is amazing. Her acting was brilliant with such raw emotion in her singing. Into the Woods was absolutely amazing. The whole idea of "going into the woods" is like "going into the real world." Love it.

There are a lot of comments here talking about "princes, wolves and humans". There is a nuance there that is best appreciated in theatre: Cinderella's Prince and the Wolf are played by the same man most of the time, since they are men who struggle with their sexual nature. The witch tries to protect Rapunzel from wolves and humans, and hurts her as much as the Wolf 'coz she is human too. The Prince is raised to be a good king and to be charming, but he is a terrible husband and he's not sincere. Cinderella understands this and lets go of her dreams of an easy life so she can help others while the prince goes and does the things he is good at. The Baker is scared of nurturing someone else because he had no guidance from his father. His father comes and tries to help while not getting involved, and the Baker learns from his father's horrible actions to become someone mature who can raise a child as father and mother, even if he now has three friends to help him look after one another. The slotted spoon _can_ catch the potatoe. Every rope was once straight rope. Everybody realizes at the end that there is no real judgment they can hold unto others: nature, appeareance and choices are highly influential in us, but while not equal, none holds power over the other two forever. "You're so good, you're so nice", says the witch. "I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just _right"._ "Witches can be right. Giants can be good. You decide what's right. You decide what's good". The Giantess was gentle at the beggining, and only started her rampage because they killed her only company. That was wrong. They understood her. They honored her mistakes. And then came to the conclusion that the damage was too much to ever convince her of forgiveness, so the right thing to do was kill the victim so other people could live. The wolf, also, is wrong. It's his nature to be that way. It's also his choices who make him that way. Little Red and the Baker learn from his wickedness to be more aware and still remain gentle. The Baker, Cinderella, Little Red and Jack make horrible mistakes and learn from others' and their own, and come to the conclusion that the woods are not to be taken lightly, but they are not something that have to face alone. To be mindful of other imperfection is to honor the fact that you are so too. Into the Woods, but mind the past. Into the Woods, but mind the future. To mind the wolf. To heed the witch. To honor the giant. To go to the festival! Into the woods! Into the woods! Into the woods, then out of the woods, and happy ever after! I wish.
I don't care who you compare Meryl Streep to. This song is haunting and she puts so much emotion into the song that you get those emotions. It's a powerful song sung by a powerful actress that seemed to put all her heart and skill into a song that actually made me cry in the theater. Conveying emotion is the main job of most actors and she clearly pulled that off.
My single favorite performance of the entire movie! You can hear the witches raw passion and emotion through Meryl Streep to the point where even though she's a fairy tale, she becomes life like. Amazing job!
What frustrates me most is that individuals whom claim to be artist will sit and compare the quality of talent instead of focusing on individual interpretation. Every artist that brings life to sacred works, text, and coveted roles will always be ridiculed and patronized for simply attempting to bring their own flare and nuances. What I can say is that Meryl Streep brings raw emotion, her chops compliment her voice, and her acting is always impeccable. What I have learned about the one and only Ms. Streep is that she doesn't accept any role she will not give her whole heart to. And, in my opinion, I am ready to die watching her bring life to Sondheim. This woman gives acting and music a new meaning. No need to compare-- my greatest piece of advice for any artist wishing to pursue a meaningful and longevity career is to not compete with masters or other artist at work, but to compete with yourself; give everything that lives inside of you; build a universe and destroy it with the talent you've been given; so that when you die you can at most feel that you've experienced the greatest expression of YOUR art and YOUR gift and YOUR purpose. Because in the end the only thing that matters is leaving a legacy that will live beyond you.
"Princes, yes, but wolves and humans, too" has _always_ tripped me up. Like, Princes *are most definitely NOT* humans in this realm, and that's just wild, and I want someone to write about it.
Her emotions was there, it was sad, it was moving. Honestly, it was the best amongst the others in the movie. In fact, I would listen to it every time and still feel some kind of something dying within me. If not dying, I can feel my inner tears shed ghostly upon my eyes. I have no care of some song from another movie, but I am here to feel the emotion once more. No, I am not a masochist. It is because this is too beautiful to even be described in words. Implied in a good metaphor, yes, but in a literal feeling? I don't think so.
I almost cried to this song. My daughter is only 2 but the thought of her growing up and going out into this crazy world scares me. This is a beautiful and touching song.
This was the moment in the movie where I had absolute faith in Meryl for her performance in the rest of the film. I was like, "Yup, she's gonna be just fine, totally exceeds expectations". As a huge fan of the musical I so appreciate when she let her full voice loose and really expressed all this emotion. Wonderfully done :)
I really love the way Meryl Streep sang this song. I can feel her pain and the emotion is so real as she sang this song to Rapunzel. I was crying when I heard this song in the theater. Simply Amazing!
Dude, the way Rapunzel screams before and during the song is so chilling. That's not the scream of someone afraid they're about to be yelled at or grounded, that's the scream of someone who is afraid they're about to be beaten 😳
She wasn't nominated for a BAFTA. Somehow Renee Russo's bland acting got the nod. And Patricia Arquette's acting along with Boyhood is an overrated piece of nonsense that has been given praise for its otherwise impressive filming time.
Ive listened to this song on repeat and for. a. fact. I have bawled my eyes out each time. "stay a child while you can be a child" hits close to home. Makes me feel like I don't appreciate my mom as much as I should.
I was watching this with my mom and i looked over at her and it was making me cry and she raised her eyebrows and she was like "I’m not singin this to you when you leave for college. I’m just kickin you ou." ...thanks mom...way to have a moment there...
Meryl did a wonderful job with this song, this is a character that you have to immerse yourself in to make the song as powerful as she does. I give her a ten on this one!
Wow! I have listened to this a million times and every time i get close to tears. I love Meryl and you can just here the emotion. It is spectacular! Meryl was amazing in this song and in this movie
Okay, calm down people and listen... Yes this is wonderful and yes some of you might prefer this to Mother knows best, (I absolutely love both by the way), but slamming one to promote the other is disrespectful to the creators and to the actors as well and completely uncalled for. So if you have any appreciation for the arts please, enough with the hate comments, just enjoy the music
I agree with you shekola. I absolutely love both movies and enjoy each for their own unique style. I will say that I had no idea Meryl Streep had such a beautiful voice. I was pleasantly surprised.
Saw the premiere of this film last night. It was fantastic (a delight for those who enjoy fairy tale musicals....and even for those who don't). I have to say this is one of my favorites, so emotional.
She was amazing in this role. Idgaf. People need to stop comparing them. She brings out that anger and frustration and disappointment in her voice during the song. The hope that she'll stay. Then that cold angry indifference when she has to resort to punishing her to protect her and keep her there forever under mother's watchful eye.
This movie is now the reason I'm scared of the woods. Remember, be careful what you wish for because what you wish and what you think you want isn't what you wanted.
Oh just LISTEN to that raw emotion. Absolutely brilliant.

This gave me chills, as well as the finale. Those are my favourite songs.
Her voice is truly beautiful she did a amazing job
One of the most magical, tragic parts of the movie. I was utterly captivated. The moment when the theatre is completely still and you can feel the music flowing through the air. It takes talent to be able to demand silence from your audience, solely because of your performance. I love those rare moments and this scene provided that. Congratulations on your amazing work in this film Meryl Streep!
Never knew Meryl could sing. This is amazing.
Check out ALICE AT THE PALACE and the end of POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE. Somewhere here on RUclips, there's a video of numerous singing performances of hers, which are lovely.
how about checking out Mamma Mia as well...?
AMAZING GRACE FROM SILKWOOD AND SHE'S ME PAL FROM IRONWEED!!!AWESOME

You're right. So, overall, though I think she gave her all and did the best that could be done with all the material in the movie (not just songs), I don't think it's among the best examples to demonstrate her abilities and artistry.
aljur ramos A prairie home companion! postcards from the edge.... omg..! xD she is terrific :D
Bernadette Peters and Meryl Streep are on the same level as far as talent, vocal ability, and legend status. Bernadette is the Meryl Streep of stage, Meryl Streep is the Bernadette Peters of film.
That is so true! Very well put.
In that one scene, it made me reflect on everything I done in the past that had disappointed my mom and the guilt built up inside that leaked out in the form of tears, I almost wanted to hug my mom and just cry in her arms right then and there as a way of telling her "I'm sorry"
Stay at home
Mom is home
Who could love you more than mother?
Stay with her
Stay a child while you can be a child
With her
No matter how grown you are, you are still momma's little boy/girl. Stay her child and show your appreciation while you still can with her
This was a very emotional piece. Meryl Streep is amazing. Her acting was brilliant with such raw emotion in her singing.
Into the Woods was absolutely amazing. The whole idea of "going into the woods" is like "going into the real world." Love it.
lyrics cuz i’m jammin:
What did I clearly say?
Children should listen
No, no, please!
What were you not to do?
Childrem must see
No!
And learn
Why could you not obey?
Children should listen
What have I been to you?
What would you have me be?
Handsome like a prince?
Ah, but I am old
I am ugly
I embarass you
No!
You are ashamed of me
No!
You are ashamed
You don't understand
It was lonely atop that tower
I was not company enough?
I am no longer a child. I wish to see the world
Don't you know what's out there in the world?
Someone has to shield you from the world
Stay with me
Princes wait there in the world, it's true
Princes, yes, but wolves and humans, too
Stay at home
I am home
Who out there could love you more than I?
What out there that I cannot supply?
Stay with me
Stay with me
The world is dark and wild
Stay a child while you can be a child
With me
This song made the whole movie for me. When she sings about who else could love her more?? Heart break every time!
"I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just _right"._
"Witches can be right.
I wish.
"Stay with me..." *throws her away to a deserted swamp/desert*
Consistency 1000
she's fabulous
'Stay a child while you can be a child'
Right in the feels
I don't care who you compare Meryl Streep to. This song is haunting and she puts so much emotion into the song that you get those emotions. It's a powerful song sung by a powerful actress that seemed to put all her heart and skill into a song that actually made me cry in the theater. Conveying emotion is the main job of most actors and she clearly pulled that off.
Meryl Streep!! What a boss lady, phenomenal voice and incredible actress!
My single favorite performance of the entire movie! You can hear the witches raw passion and emotion through Meryl Streep to the point where even though she's a fairy tale, she becomes life like. Amazing job!
Meryl's voice and emotions are pure perfection
I love this song the tone goes from aggressiveness and anger then emotional and compassionate she did amazing in this movie ❤
"Princes, yes, but wolves and humans, too" has _always_ tripped me up. Like, Princes *are most definitely NOT* humans in this realm, and that's just wild, and I want someone to write about it.
the emotions she puts in the song... just amazing
I don't understand why everyone hate that Meryl Streep was playing the witch. She's amazing! She deserve some praise for this performance.
I started to cry when I first saw this.
1:42 INSTANT CHILLS! this is truly a stunning capture of rare flaming passion
Meryl never ceases to amaze!
FAVOURITE SONG FROM INTO THE WOOD
this sounds amazing....dont judge just because she's a hollywood actress.....shes considered one of the best for a reason
She is simply the best ever. Meryl deserves all the awards of the season!!!
I know everybody can sing nowadays, but listen to the emotion in this. This is talent.
That's not true not everybody can sing well. Yes everybody can sing but not everybody can sing well or great or fantastic.
-Every note is just of real emotion! This is what we call music!
Meryl KILLED this.
I really love the way Meryl Streep sang this song. I can feel her pain and the emotion is so real as she sang this song to Rapunzel. I was crying when I heard this song in the theater. Simply Amazing!
2,5 years later... Maryl Streep is still the best thing about the movie.
Dude, the way Rapunzel screams before and during the song is so chilling. That's not the scream of someone afraid they're about to be yelled at or grounded, that's the scream of someone who is afraid they're about to be beaten 😳
"Stay a child while you can be a child," That line always hits me REALLY hard ='( No one stays a child forever...
This is a beautiful song. The energy, the emotion, the sadness in her voice. Meryl Streep really does the witch's part a favour in this movie!
oh men.. such a talented and versatile actress.... give her the SAG, GG , BAFTA and the Oscars! oh common!
Hopefully she wins if Arquette doesn't.
Nick Peek I love Meryl but Arquette deserves the oscar for this year..a
ramdelossantos Not really. Her performance was underwhelming.
She wasn't nominated for a BAFTA. Somehow Renee Russo's bland acting got the nod. And Patricia Arquette's acting along with Boyhood is an overrated piece of nonsense that has been given praise for its otherwise impressive filming time.
TheatreofSymphony Meryl will still get in. I guarantee that.
Ive listened to this song on repeat and for. a. fact. I have bawled my eyes out each time. "stay a child while you can be a child" hits close to home. Makes me feel like I don't appreciate my mom as much as I should.
i feel like watching this movie now. im gonna go watch it
Zarion Hannah go, boyh
Meryl slayed this song. This role was perfect for her. Queen.
I was watching this with my mom and i looked over at her and it was making me cry and she raised her eyebrows and she was like "I’m not singin this to you when you leave for college. I’m just kickin you ou."
...thanks mom...way to have a moment there...
Pffft-
But also good on her for knowing that she has to let you go at one point and shouldn't try to make you stay
Meryl did a wonderful job with this song, this is a character that you have to immerse yourself in to make the song as powerful as she does. I give her a ten on this one!
I cried for this song, it such a beautiful and deep song.
I’m playing the witch in the jr version at the moment and I’m in love with this song
OMG ... this is just breath taking!
Wow! I have listened to this a million times and every time i get close to tears. I love Meryl and you can just here the emotion. It is spectacular! Meryl was amazing in this song and in this movie
I'm in love with Meryl Streep's voice !!
The raw emotion in this sent chills up my spine, absolutely brilliant
I am in love with this recording. I had no clue that Meryl Streep could belt and this just blew me away. Extremely excited for the movie :D
goosebumps. all the emotion in her voice and the passion wow
Anndrea Mottram most of us were
Saw the premiere of this film last night. It was fantastic (a delight for those who enjoy fairy tale musicals....and even for those who don't).
I have to say this is one of my favorites, so emotional.
This is AMAZING!!! I've been waiting for this and I was not disappointed!!
Such beautiful and emotional lyrics. Simply astounding and filled with love, hate, anger, and compassion. Oh it is simply wonderful!
My God she's good. I knew I'd have a tough time hearing anybody but Bernadette but what a great performance. My. God. She's. Good.
beautify sang by the amazing Meryl Streep. I have listened to this like 50 times today. Love the movie too. Meryls voice rocks good on ya
This song always brings tears to my eyes. The emotion is beautiful and the lyrics hit home. 👏👏💖 I fall asleep to this, it's so soothing.
This movie is now the reason I'm scared of the woods. Remember, be careful what you wish for because what you wish and what you think you want isn't what you wanted.
I've listened to this song on repeat for days now. Meryl just has so much emotion in this song. It's great.
