Elvis and Jackie were great friends...they always complimented each other as being better than the other.
They also had the same type of mother. Both were taken to Church to sing, and as single child, they were pampered, and strictly disciplined.
It was their mother's who made these boys into the men they became....goes to show what a mother's influence can make of a man.

Jackie was one hell of a performer. His style was truly ORIGINAL! Yes, he was admired by his peers like James Brown, Elvis and Michael Jackson. Like them, his influence will be felt for generations to come.

I am so tired of hearing that vocalist "A" is better than vocalist "B". It is subjective -- like comparing bourbon and scotch -- It is ironic that Elvis thought Jackie was better; and Jackie thought Elvis was better. Anyway, I don't give a damn who is better. I think they are both great and I am going to continue to enjoy both of them!

And this clip is that's its LIVE no lip sync no over dub none of that.
Voice comes through crystal clear. Nothing against the "artists" of today but in the day you had to do it live and prove yourself on stage before the record deal, and the record had to sound good before anybody ever saw you.
Now its all about how you look, the publicity shots and photo stills are taken first and if you cant sing they just autotune it. And nobody sings live anymore not even at presidential inaugurations

Jackie Wilson was a legendary performer live but his records rarely ever achieved that intenseness and pure energy. Brunswick was a pretty staid label and tempered many of his songs with hokey arrangements. Despite that, his early hits "Reet Petite", "Lonely Teardrops" and "Doggin' Around" and "Baby Workout" were good records. But he really hit his stride with his Carl Davis produced material - "Whispers" and "Higher and Higher" being his best songs. A real tragedy his career died with his 1975 heart attack and being comatose the last 9 years of his life.

The pic from 66 was signed by Elvis to Jackie saying you have a friend forever. Jackie treasured that picture and apparently carried it around with him.We have lost some special talents over the last 40 years. None more so than those two. If Jackies career had been handled better. And he had better promotion and songwriters behind him. He should have been alot better. Unfortunately when Berry Gordy left and greedy Matt Turnapol got hold of Jackie. That was never going to be.

I have several albums by Jackie Wilson. This guy's range and versitility was unmatched...light opera, soul, rock and roll, pop, blues, etc. Listen to his soulful rendition of "Danny Boy"...packed full of falsetto. Then listen to his delivery on "Night". He sings it strictly by "scale". That last note... bam!, right from the diaphram. You're hearing this from a big Elvis fan....but, you just have to tell it like it is. Jackie Wilson was the greatest "popular" vocalist to merge from the 1950s.

Not true, he went to see Tom Jones before getting his Vegas act together. However , Elvis greatly admired Jackie, went to see him twice . Gave him a signed card that read, “ you have a friend forever “ which Jackie carried with him everywhere. You can see Jackie’s influence when Elvis sings “ Return to Sender “, you can hear Elvis influence when Jackie sings “ Reet Petite “. Lifelong friends acknowledge by Jackie’s son. Elvis first went to see Jackie at “ The Tripp “ in LA. Mid 60s. Roy Orbison tells his co host, “ Jackie’s a friend of yours “, lol. If he said that about Elvis , even Jackie would say 100% true. Both admired each other Jackie telling reporter, “ I took as much from him as he took from me “ !

Thank G-d for video footage and the technology, i.e., cd/tape/vinyl, that keeps the talented Mr. Wilson "alive" in memory. He was super-talented, and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live many, many times since the 1950's when he began with The Dominoes that also featured Clyde McPhatter in the quintet. He was always the 'ladies man' and was shot by a disgruntled lover in a Central Park area hotel where he was staying during the 1960's.

It was Elvis Presley (very typical behavior for him to pay random peoples' medical bills, pay complete strangers' mortgages, give cars and motorcycles to people, give the rings off his fingers to strangers, etc...) who paid (at least part of) Jackie Wilson's final medical expenses. Elvis also gave the largest donation to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, among other things.
And the one that got shot in the motel was Sam Cooke. :'(

Elvis believed Jackie should have been the number one singer in the world. To his fans he already is. But in commercial and artistic terms his full potential was never realized. Still when I listen to Rags to Riches from his days with Billy Wards Dominoes. I have to remind myself that I am listening to a 19 year old Jackie. The quality and power of his voice even then was spectacular.
