In melee combat, you need as many stunning or knockdown tools at your disposal, or a way to prevent them from happening to you (like Combat Stims or other similar drugs/abilities). All it takes is a single one to land and you can swing the advantage heavily into your favor. That's why if you are facing against any kind of humanoid antag and you are ill-equipped for the situation, stick to ranged weapons and keep your distance, lead them into chokepoints, and try to obtain a numbers advantage. Many people forget that a crowbar or metal sheets are some of the best combat equipment to someone who isn't in Shitcurity or R&D. The ability to obtain a nearly-infinite amount of floor tiles to throw at your opponent is one of the greatest weapons that is completely underutilized (they can also embed into the body, causing lingering bloodloss).
