What an absolutely wonderful video! I truly hope that the algorithm picks this up as this it absolutely deserves to blow up. Thank you so much for putting this together, and sorry about the attack of the leaf blowers!
really great points here. i think the westernization of the world has made us look at everything with certain assumptions. also that research about french and english music is so cool!
I agree. The full study is here if you're interested: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010027702001877?casa_token=b4ntpxY-7NwAAAAA:TjwDbmI8O05G_J4ZSIHLMgjm8V2cKVeqy_SKexcttcHscSCh76oaTTY-tApx5C7ztbqB3CDc5Q
Great video. 4:05 but people - arts and humanities people especially - have to get away from fetishising "definition". Meaning, in natural language, does not come from definition. Formal definitions (maths, logic, mathematical sciences) is important but always contingent. In arts and humanities "definitions" are never used formally, so what's the point? It's closet essentialism.
I don't disagree with this. As I say, the best definition of music is just 'music is whatever you consider as such'. There's little point in overemphasising a concise, one sentence definition. That being said, one context in which definitions, even in the humanities, are helpful, is in translation/foreign language. It's less that a formal definition is necessary, and more the lack of consensus around the word 'music' to illustrate the broader point: that our understanding of auditory art forms or performances can be limited by the word itself. By and large, though, I agree; formal definitions are not the be-all and end-all of understanding concepts.
Wow! I was already watching this video for a few minutes when I noticed this only had 500 views. Very high quality video! I think Adam Neely would find this very interesting.
Amazing video! Really well researched and clearly presented. I will eagerly watch your channel for new releases. Great work on creating a really thought provoking piece!

Still recovering from the attack.

That’s very high praise! His videos are certainly a big influence on mine.
Music is moved by audible experience. So subjective and objective elements.
