  • After two years in the doldrums have the Mercedes design team finally found a sweet spot? Craig Scarborough's first impressions of the new W15 are positive - and he's intrigued, too, by the "0.1" fourth element on the front wing (which may or may not be legal).

    As Scarbs said, James Allison is back as Technical Director so the 2024 F1 car is 'his'.
    Also, good to know that this seat position is comfortable for Lewis.
    (By comparison, if I recall correctly, the design of the 2022 and 2023 cars was led by A N Other. And although cautious of what I read, I'm led to believe that some of Lewis's input to the layout/design of those cars was over-ruled. Apologies if I'm wrong).

    • @Redlingstein
      @Redlingstein 7 месяцев назад

      No the seat position can ONLY be changed in the chassis….before the season not during. And… any change of weight distribution creates issues throughout the whole car… that’s what James Allison has explained. You can’t JUST set the seat more to the back… you need to change stuff all over the car cos of it…. LH thinks he knows abt the technical stuff, but he doesn’t….WORDS BY ALLISON

    Conventional aka similar to RB for this generation is not boring if it completely reverses Mercedes abysmal previous two seasons performance. Continuing down the same zero pod path and expecting a different result after exhausting all solution sets is defined as insanity.
    And making mistakes is part of engineering. NASA blew up how many rockets trying to get John Glenn into space to orbit the earth. They fell behind the Russians in the space race then blew them off the map and never looked back.
    I am not a Mercedes fan but I am a believer in engineers getting it right eventually. And lest the critics forget there is no great reward without great risk. I do applaud Mercedes for their daring approach even if it failed.

    Don't disagree with the list of issues that Scarb's mentions about he W14, but the key issue for me was that it was draggy in a straight line. It wasn't easy to drive but it was competitive in mid-speed corners. It just didn't have the flat out straight line speed of its rivals. Hopefully the sidepod changes and the floor will cure some of this, along with the rear changes to fix its problems in the low-speed corners.

      Not necessarily. If it becomes problematic for the racing, it will get banned before then. Also, others will have to compromise their suspension designs to accommodate this and would they really be willing? I am not too sure. Maybe just Ferrari and Aston can implement this kind of thing.

    • @BNOVA
      @BNOVA 7 месяцев назад +1

      Part of rhe reason they showed it now vs when testing started next week is to get the teams protesting it to see if it will be banned that way they can add the tweaked but less desirable front wing design implemented.

    about the front wing, i think FIA can't really stop the teams from innovating within the rules, what they can do is monitor how much dirty air a car produces (idk if they can measure that) but i think thats the only sure-fire way to ensure the regulations work as intended, i did hear last year that redbull was the most dirty-air producing car because of how their diffusor was working i think it could be the same with aston and mercedes this year producing a lot more dirty air because now they must have changed their diffusors as well

    I agree with Scarbs that Merc just didn't know how to approach the '22 regulations. Also part of the reason for that was to run bigger wheels to cope with the weight/torque and make the cars stiffer and require more driver input to the overall lap time. Merc couldn't rely on mountains of tyre data - because the tyres were completely different. And as Allison said 'philosophy' is not about the specifics parts you design, but what your priorities are and mindset is.

    Observation: It appears that Adrian Newey has master the art of reducing the cross sectional profile of suspension arms and air inlets to minimize drag (maximizing top end speed). Compare the RB's to Mercedes cars and it appears the RB's have a much smaller component drag profile (or thinner components to minimize drag). I hope someone confirms (or not).

    The out wash or dirty air from the Merc was one of the things that made it so dominate before the 2022 changes. I think Merc has and is trying to get as much dirty air coming off their car to make it difficult to follow/overtake. 9:25 mike elliot with his shit concept not only ruined the aerodynamics, they re packaged the power unit for these terrible aero which ruined the best PU on the grid where development is now frozen. All of this also seems to have sent the statistically best driver of all time which brand reach well outside of Motorsport away from their team. It will be interesting to see how the team can recover over the next 3 years.
