Although a flop with heavily divisive(mostly negative) reviews, I genuinely think this movie will stand the test of time. I love this movie so much and it might be my favorite Aster movie within a rewatch. It’s relentlessly energetic and extremely funny despite the bleak madness within the incredibly depraved world. He actually did wanna make this his first movie. After YEARS of not getting funding(also writing 9 other scripts), he wrote Hereditary and Midsommar, which became his first two movies. The fact he’s not in directors jail and making his next movie right now is actually crazy. Martin Scorsese actually used this movie as an inspiration for Killers of the Flower Moon, not to mention film legends like Bong Joon Ho(Parasite) and John Waters(Pink Flamingos) giving its flowers as well. Seeing it twice in theaters, and taking new people each time, it’s some of my favorite experiences in the movie theater in quite some time. Y’alls reaction were amazing!
Notice one of the opening logos: MW... as in Mona Wasserman, Beau's mom. Meaning everything we're seeing that's happening to Beau, everything he's experienced his entire life, THE MOVIE ITSELF, was orchestrated by Mona. By the end, everything he's ever said and/or done was definitely used against him in the Court of Mona. He was being punished for being a crappy son, and for being born even. His father didn't die during conception -- he probably left after Mona got pregnant with Beau. So she fed Beau the double BS of his dad dying during conception, and that the same thing would happen to Beau if he ever has s*x. Furthermore, the giant "monster" being his "dad" is a metaphor for his dad pulling a dick move by leaving his mom. The perfect movie to watch on Mother's Day. 😉
Beau looks for the plot
The plot can be summed up in: "An anxious man tries to leave his apartment to visit his mother".
