    I had a kid scratch my car and dent it a little, in traffic (he just turned into my lane without looking). The kid was poor. He was with his girlfriend. We pulled onto the next street and looked at the damage together. We exchanged numbers. I said I'd get it assessed for repair and call him.
    That kid came every week for 3 months with a cashier's check of a very small amount all the way to my part of town so he could personally make payments for the repair. At that point I told him it was enough and I would cover the rest.
    Perhaps I should have just forgiven him, but it wasn't my car and the owner wanted it repaired.
    I think about that kid a lot. I think he lost his driving privileges because he had to get a ride to bring the check. What a fine human being though. I hope very much he's having a wonderful life.

    I once lightly dinged the back of someone's car making a careless turn. I stopped and left my information on the windshield, with an apology and my phone number. The guy who found my note was so gobsmacked that someone had actually been honest and let him know about the minor damage that he just brushed it off with a laugh when I offered to pay. The reversing light on my old Fiesta might as well have been a glow worm for all the light it produced, so I missed a jet black BMW which was sitting in the parking space I thought was empty.
    I grabbed my torch from my toolbox, and went to inspect the damage - the back of my Fiesta was in tatters, but the BMW didn't have a scratch on it. I still left my number on a note anyway, just in case I'd missed something. Never heard anything back from them though.

    I “accidentally” rear-ended a guy a few years back(he break checked me in an intersection on a green light) we both pulled over somewhere and began checking for damage, he claimed my car broke the clip of a plastic detail that ran along the back of his car holding it in place and “now it was loose”. Being a mechanic of 4+ yrs at the time I had some doubts, anyway I got my insurance info ready to exchange and they could figure it out-he quickly dismissed bringing insurance into it and asked if I would like to just pay him directly “so you insurance rates don’t go up” says he “haha bs.” thinks I. I told him I don’t carry cash but if I get his number I can cash app him whatever the cost is. He gets back to me a few days later saying it’s almost $800 in damage. I didn’t respond just blocked his number. I’m quite fine living with that decision.

      On the other hand just last year I was in stop and go traffic typical bumper-to-bumper stuff and a young guy hits me not too bad but enough of a jolt to get my adrenaline pumping and my coffee spilled. Same as before we both pull off to the shoulder and before I can get to the back of my car he’s apologizing and shaking so bad I thought he was gonna drop his phone-of course he didn’t mean to hit me it was a genuine accident and he was sorry. I told him “I’m ok, you’re ok, that’s all that matters let’s just take a deep breath.” After a second of helping him get his nerves under control I said “let’s take a look and make sure the cars are ok. I couldn’t see even a dent or scratch on either, checked under both and all seemed perfectly fine. I told him if he wants to exchange info and let our insurance companies know that’s fine but I’m not worried about anything and I’m happy to call it good. He agreed and apologized again I accepted and to said not let this ruin his day. Again I’m quite fine living with that decision.

It is German, and as we all know that in their language we pronounce EVERY letter, thus the long E. You are correct in that it is a girls name (pronounced with the E), I believe that it was named after the daughter of the person (who's name escapes me at the moment) who designed the vehicle. Although I don't have a Porsche, I had this done to my car, most probably also by a neighbour (can't be sure, unfortunately). No note, no nothing. Feels like sh't, so I wouldn't do it to someone else.
    Generally, I started finding it much easier to accept the flawed nature of human existence and just say "mistakes were done and will continue to be done" try and correct and continue.

    • @Olfan
      @Olfan 5 дней назад +1

      I wholeheartedly agree.
      When we thought our kids had opened the rear door too wide, slamming a scratch into the neighbour's car, we went and told him at once. He came out, had a look and waved it off: "Could have been there for months, not worth the trouble, thanks for telling, though." When my other neighbour had his tyke crash into my car on his very first bicycle ride I was more concerned about the poor boy than the polish of my car.
      When someone dented the tank of my motorbike and didn't tell, though, we had a full-blown police investigation which not only found the perpetrator out but also was far more costly to them than just ringing me up and talking it out - in time, money and trust.
      Honest mistakes can always be forgiven - even a sacred oldtimer bike is just an object, after all. Damaging the trust level in an entire neighbourhood is a far bigger thing and never worth lying about or obfuscating a mistake.

    Would I leave a note?
    Well, probably. I try to be honest, and vehicle collisions are always covered by compulsory insurance here anyway in Australia, so there's no reason _not_ to tell someone so that they can make a claim, get their car checked over, make sure it's not that 1-in-100 case where a bump in the car park has fractured the frame or dislodged an airbag or something. That being said, I actually have had my foot slip off the clutch once while backing, and I dinged someone's car, and then I went to find them and let them know; I was prepared for anger, sadness, or frustration, but what I got was this _weird gloating_ as if they were the ones who'd found me, with hand-rubbing and pointing and 'you're in it now!' and that just left me feeling disturbed.
    On the one hand, I know I was in the wrong with the damage to their car; on the other hand, I did do the right thing in finding them and giving them my insurance thing to claim from, and from their response I gathered that I was very likely reimbursing someone who would already have hated me, whether I'd damaged their car or not, and who would _not_ have done the right thing by me if the situation had been reversed. Which stung a bit; but I suppose the right thing to do is the right thing to do, regardless of who you're doing it for.

    As you've said, humans are great at deluding themselves. Including convincing themselves they're the good guys if they commint horrible things.
    So, your reasoning wasn't finished. You've simply been born and grown fortunate enough without any significant hinderances to accept or create this moral compass of yours.

    One should not do the right thing because of fear of consequences but because it is right. If you only do the right thing when it is convenient or you have been already caught you are not a good person. The "no one saw", "it was dark", "no chance of getting caught" are all the things you need to to identify someone who is not trustworthy. If they do it to stranger they do it to anybody. That is how they operate.
    I also try to use the most basic level of empathy. What if I was the other person? Everybody makes mistakes. Being a good person is not about doing any mistakes ever but how you deal with the mistakes when they happen. Plus I have insurance against this kind of thing. For 200€ you are off the hook no matter how bad you did.
    Some people are also good at rationilizing and justifying everything. They are never in the wrong. If they do something nasty they'll just think everybody else do it too. That is projecting their own faults into everybody else and thinking everybody else is just shitty person as they are. But just because there are shitty people out there does not justify being one. Make the world better place, not worse.
    Also this specific scenario is yet one more proof that our legal system is shit. The law doesn't actually require you to even leave a note. The idea there is that no one has the obligation to self-incriminate. So according to the law you can smash the other car and just drive off. As long as no one is hurt you are fucking free to go. Just another proof how broken the law and justice system is. It literally protects the thieves. If they find you then you have to pay. But you are not required to do anything as the criminal. Insane.

    Once while parking in a tight lot, I scratched my front bumper on a big truck's massive wheels (they were bulging out from under the rim).
    It put a huge dent but did nothing but leave a white powder mark across their rubber. I agonized whether to leave a contact note and a dollar, but after some people kept looking and it scared me off. It made me depressed for the rest of the day in class and I really expected to find a fine or notice on my car after I leave.
    But there was nothing. Nothing at all.
    Ever since then, I've wished I coukd go back in time and have a a conversation with the truck driver.😅

      There's a difference between blindly following morality because you've been told its right/wrong and actually ruminating on the implications/merits of morality and choosing certain acts because you deem them right/wrong on a personal level. Morality is a tool.
      Total moral relativism isn't an intellectual or mature take - it's just running from responsibility/accountability.

    "I don't do things that make me dislike myself".
    You don't or you try not to?
    I think most of us imagine we act this way but in reality we all sometimes fail. I think the bigger question is: WHEN (not 'if') you fail to live up to your own moral compass, do you accept that you failed and try to improve yourself or do you rationalise your actions in a way to make yourself feel like you didn't fail? If you can't think of a time that you did something that made you dislike yourself then you are doing the second because we all mess up from time to time.

    you encode the concept of being a git into 'damaging property and not owning up to it' which pretty well entails your conclusion. It seems entirely plausible to say a minor scrape that you don't tell a person who owns a porsche about doesn't entail being a git. also consciousness as a developed mechanism for defending our 'niceness' seems to mistake the concept of being nice (something that at least needs proof is not a social concept) as being a natural kind. Do dolphins and octopi develop consciousness for the same reason? do they have a concept of 'niceness'? making friends also seems like something that we can do *because* of our consciousness, which further makes this seem like putting the cart before the horse sort of logic.
    Also, i think you can find that people who tend to delude themselves that they are kind or good or generous, even though they are not, do not tend to be seen as those things by other people. So deluding oneself into believing they are the constructs they want to be seems to suggest the opposite of your claim (granted, without much evidence here, but hey you're using anecdotal evidence yourself so just engaging in a similar way).

    For me it depends on how they were parked.
    If they are within the lines then I feel I probably would own up to it as it was my fault and I'd have a hard time rationalising it as not being so. They're also more likely to be reasonable as well since they took the time to do things properly.
    If they are outside the lines though I likely wouldn't as I would see it as their fault for not parking correctly. I also feel like they wouldn't be reasonable either and milk the heck out of it, seeing it as an opportunity to send you the bill for other things that weren't my fault. After all if they won't take the extra minute to think of others by parking properly then why would I expect them to care about me.

    A famous poem by Edgar Guest I thought fitting:
    I have to live with myself and so
    I want to be fit for myself to know.
    I want to be able as days go by,
    always to look myself straight in the eye;
    I don’t want to stand with the setting sun
    and hate myself for the things I have done.
    I don’t want to keep on a closet shelf
    a lot of secrets about myself
    and fool myself as I come and go
    into thinking no one else will ever know
    the kind of person I really am,
    I don’t want to dress up myself in sham.
    I want to go out with my head erect
    I want to deserve all men’s respect;
    but here in the struggle for fame and wealth
    I want to be able to like myself.
    I don’t want to look at myself and know
    I am bluster and bluff and empty show.
    I never can hide myself from me;
    I see what others may never see;
    I know what others may never know,
    I never can fool myself and so,
    whatever happens I want to be
    self respecting and conscience free.

    As someone who knows how "Porsche" is actually supposed to be pronounced (the German pronunciation), I can assure the British pronunciation isn't any better than the American one. In fact, one can argue the American pronunciation is slightly better - depending on whether they manage to get the end bit right, i.e. not saying "Porscha" instead of "Porsche".
