I like this song with the exception of the last verse. I will have just my social security and the money I have saved in my retirement funds to live on when I stop working. And yes, most of my money is involved in the stock market. In the last verse Pete sings about about markets crashing and stocks and bonds not being worth anything. He also ends the last verse being a little smart alecky about the economy. Let's not forget people need jobs to make a living. They also have to take some responsibility on saving for retirement. Pete seeger through out the folk boom of the 1960's was making a six figure income from royalties from other artist recording his songs. I believe he was worth at least 1 million at the time of his passing. Many people who are coming up to retirement should be as lucky. We in America of course should work to help the worlds environment. But remember the old Soviet Union under Stalin did many things that hurt the land water and air. Capitalism is not perfect. It as its problems. But socialism and communism doesn't offer a better way of helping the environment.
But nearly every country in western Europe has environmental policies and programs and education in place that leaves the U.S. choking in the dust of its own... ...garbage, garbage, garbage.
This album and song is a hidden gem. Great LP
Thanks for posting this! I was looking for it.
Bill Steele, who wrote this song, died in Ithaca NY on December 17, 2018. RIP Bill.
No one can claim we weren't warned.
True to this day, and just because reactionary conservatives tell you it ain't so, don't make it so.
