"Unlocking Jazz Melody" : Lessons from a simple phrase (Barney Bigard)

- In this video, I dive into a little phrase by the legendary clarinetist Barney Bigard that can teach you so much more. When I hear a phrase I like from a master, I not only learn it but also aim to understand how it can benefit my improvisation and construction one melodies.
In this example, Bigard’s phrase over a D chord-using notes like Eb & Bb taught me early on that melody can go beyond conventional chord tones. This isn’t about overthinking the mechanics; it’s about discovering that, when constructing melodies in a solo, the notes don’t have to strictly align with chord structures. It follows the saying the great saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi told a friend of mine on a lesson: “Melody trumps chord.”
Join me as I break down this little phrase and explore simple ways to let your melodies guide the way.

Thank you Adrian, very inspiring for the aspiring.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thinking process and knowledge through those videos. With all the jazz theory videos on youtube (often over complicating simple concepts), it’s refreshing to listen to someone who puts what’s important first: the sound and the feel. I also really appreciate the organic way you share your wisdom with us, the way music used to and should be taught.
Here's an idea for a next video. How do you go about memorizing songs/chord progressions? Do you have any tricks to remembering tunes? It seems like you know hundred (thousands?) of songs, what advice would you give someone who knows a few tunes but struggles to memorize more? Thanks again Adrian!
❤ thanks for sharing!
So welcome
As usual you're spot on. Every time you do these chats, I want to take my clarinet out and start playing.
What I do, I hear things in my head ...sometimes they work, sometimes well I get "That Look" from the band when an idea went off the rails. Live and learn I say! It's a Jazz adventure. I try to avoid the " Jazz Odyssey". I'm very rooted in blues, and that's what I go for in every tune. Make it wail.
That makes me happy !!!
When I was in New Orleans a well known trumpet player said to me, " Its OK to take a little thing from this musician and another little thing from that musician but you cant steal a mans soul." I think what you are saying chimes very well with that.
Perfect sense! We preach from the same hymn sheet... thanks! A breath of fresh air after all the "painting-by-numbers" videos that proliferate!
THANK YOU, had some nice messages and lots of shares so hopefully helpful along the way :)
