A well-designed team of characters enables the story's protagonist to achieve their goal, and at the same time keeps the story interesting by providing a constant source of conflict. In this video we examine the team tasked with hunting down a great white shark in Jaws to see how each individual’s character traits create the ideal balance of harmony and dissonance.

Thank you to TierZoo for collaborating with us! Jaws was the *original* summer blockbuster, smashing box office records. What summer blockbuster is particularly memorable to you?
Back to the Future
Back to the Future-classic!
In '77 we saw Star Wars-- right before it became incredibly popular that summer. It was special. We were transported to an amazing world. And when the end credits rolled, everyone in the theater cheered and applauded. Such a great memory to cherish.
Also, I second Back to the Future; supreme entertainment, and the best film experience of 1985.
Yea, yawn, this collaboration was your worst recent effort.
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - my favorite installment of my favorite film series. And it's got the best pre-credits sequence I've ever seen.
This was such a fun collab! I'd say we're somewhat of a top tier team ourselves :)
Couldn't agree more! :)
Face ass☠️
Im so proud of you tierzoo!
WHICH BEAR IS BEST?
@TierZoo I liked the video before watching because it's my two favourite youtubers collaborating, but this blew all my expectations out of the water. I just expected a brief aside from you talking about sharks, but your styles were integrated throughout and your style helped nail Michael's key points about character. As if it wasn't clever enough to compare biology to video game tiers, you've struck gold again by doing it with film analysis! Who knows what else you're capable of!
and it is all backed by John Williams' magnificent score. Always makes me feel like I am on the boat.
For any John Williams fans, or people who would like to get to know his work better, I highly recommend The Baton: A John Williams Musical Journey. It's an amazing podcast, and there are currently 83 episodes, with many more planned still.
You’re so correct, Shiela!
Thanks for sharing this,@@b1odome!
I always thought jaws was scored by Hans Zimmer.
My parents took me to see Jaws when I was 5, because my dad claimed he thought i would like it since he thought I liked sharks. My sister said it was actually because the whole family was going; including my sisters who usually babysat me, and my parents didn't want to pay for a babysitter for me. I remember being terrified to state of panic, and refusing to even go on the beach for our next year's vacation. Gotta love 70's parents.
I could have written this comment. My father did the same thing to five year old me.
OMG, right? Seeing what happened to Ben Gardner and Quint screwed me up for years!
We sail... dad would play this every summer (messed up enough, right, oh not, not far enough for my father). One time, when I was about seven, we watched it and then I went to my bunk (at the front of the boat head was just below water level on the outside) and went to sleep. My father crept on deck, along the side deck, grabbed a boat hook and started smacking the side of the boat right next to where my head was. He had to radio the other boats to let them know what was going on because the screaming was so loud they thought someone was being murdered. The radio was lit up like a Christmas tree the next morning as the other dads called in to warn everyone that they were going to copy my dad. The screaming is funny when it isn't happening to you. Got to love 90s parents.
Not just a 70s kid but the 3rd son. I was dropped off or sent out the front door with no supervision & no more than a dime in my pocket to call home - hundreds of times. Still ticking.
Huh, this is a crossover I would have never expected.
Zaseeya Kamal kind of hokey. So I watched the whole thing.
The collaboration with TierZoo is unexpected, but very welcome. The man is a living legend.
I saw Jaws on TV when I was seven. I was terrified, almost traumatized. Yet, I didn't feel hatred for it, but instead fascination. I had to understand what scared me in it, so I borrowed every book about sharks. I was scared by them, yet so fascinated by the horror I felt. Years later, I was given it on DVD by a friend and revisited it. I remembered almost everything and was so taken by rewatching the film. I also decided to pop into the extras and was equally fascinated by the process behind it. Now it wasn't about the sharks, but how a movie and story could scare me. I wanted to learn and to be able to do it on my own. And today, I work as a horror writer, writing for role-playing games and short stories. A lot of that is because of Jaws and the impact it had on me. And sharks still holds the S-tier of my favorite animals (just like Hooper says; "I love sharks"). Jaws is a movie I always come back to and every time, I'm amazed at how great it is.
Yes...but do you swim in the ocean?:)
Sheila Tucker I do! Been a while since I was near the ocean, but I do!
Now I just realised that Spielberg really likes to put in his film characters who dislike the technology. He made it with Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park. There is always a conflict between technological progress and guys who are old school.
This is a top tier crossover
2:47 In 2020, the mayor's attitude is giving me feelings of deja vu.
What an interesting look at the Anthropocene meta, specifically examining the "Acting" subskill and the "Movie-Making" minigame.
45 years old this year.
Yet, not one aspect of this film is dated.
So true! It really holds up!
The Shark looks bad towards the end, when you see more of it. Everything else is still pretty much perfect.
@@theheadshotstudio9254 That's true. It is what kept me from being too scared when I first saw it 45 years ago. But when I try to imagine what it would look like now with the slick CGI graphics, I feel like the kind of clunky shark really is better. it is clunky, but it is real
@@theheadshotstudio9254 But that was because the crew had a lot of problems with the robot shark. There's a lot of story about the behind-the-scenes stuff on this film. It's not as disturbing as what happened with Apocalypse Now, but it is a cautionary tale for those who are thinking of filming a movie.
@@canaisyoung3601 Just in general, filming movies in deep water usually results in a bad time.
Never in my life have I ever needed something so bad without ever realizing it!
Jaws is my favorite movie ever btw. Thanks for doing this.
Awesome! That's great to hear :)
45 years later and that dolly zoom on Brody (2:57) still gets me. This movie is so good.
So good
Jaws is a perfect film. Due to Peter Benchley's massive exprience in working with sharks and writing the story. Then Mr. Spielberg improving the story.
This was such a fresh and unique take on characters! I will honestly use this in writing from now on. Too often in script editing do I see the one competent main character with side characters who mostly exist only to further plot and make the protagonist look good - I'm definitely sending those writers this video from now on (as well as using it myself)
HOOPER DRIVES THE BOAT CHIEF.
THATS WHY Megalodon was a flop.. They got Statham (whos an excellent actor) who was everything the shark "fear" to fight..
This is why several top budget blockbusters fail. Not to flog a dead horse but the latest Starwars Trilogy and Rey.
it wasn't a huge flop but the movie did not work for me because yea there was no suspence, everybody knew Statham would beat the shit out of that shark. I like Statham but having read the Meg book, I was so pissed when he was cast as Jonas Taylor, they completely missed the point. Jonas in the book was an intellectual and really an average man. He had vulnerability and that is why it worked as a story. He wasn't some he-man type.
Jaws was the first true horror movie I ever watched with my aunt. The decapitated head in the sunken ship scared the living heck out of me
Some interesting writing to analyse would be Joss Whedon's work - specifically _Buffy_ and _Angel._
The characters had vastly different power levels (with the title characters being the strongest usually) but they all had their own particular moments to shine and each was vital to the success and often had their own area of expertise.
And they had a lot of conflict that propelled the story as much as the adversary.
And a unique aspect was that they were sometimes interchangeable, with adversaries becoming allies and vice versa (their most devastating enemies were often former friends).
And even without "turning to the Dark side" there were still betrayals and conflict on a personal level.
casbott Agreed, Whedon has a great ability to write engaging ensembles and side characters.
Haven’t even watched the video yet but this is the greatest crossover I didn’t know I wanted since The Hound fought Brienne.
:D
I enjoy TierZoo but this video feels a bit tacked on to me, his contributions don't really add any extra weight to your points. The collab portions feel like they were added to an already complete LFTS script. Still a good analysis though :)
who asked
Chloe Alexandra I agree
Sad but True. The tier list is not necessary.
I enjoy both their channels, but for me they did not manage to merge their voices into a coherent video. Maybe the Tier Zoo pieces should also have contained team cooperation analysis and ending on S tier was unnecessary and felt incorrect. I don't know, doesn't feel like a rounded concept.
YES- TIERZOO AND LESSONS FROM THE SCREENPLAY- IN ONE VIDEO-
Happy to see you guys working together! Great video! 🦈
Thank you!
I always thought the shark was the protagonist.
There are some moments where I'm rooting for the shark...
@@LessonsfromtheScreenplay Such as? I think that Quint, while totally an asshole didn't deserve to die simply due to his... Well... Complexity. He's a complex flawed human being, but he's not an absolute monster.
@@brunomilocchi3897 Agreed. Losing a limb and living would have sufficed.
@@Passions5555 like a leg! That would've been perfect haha!
One of my all time favorite movies.
Such a good video breaking down the characters. Please bring us more like it!
Came here for the tier zoo, stayed for awesome video
Michael, may I say this was my favorite video of yours so far? I have watched this film countless times, and never came even close to this analysis / breakdown of characters. Wow, this is just brilliant. I am speechless.
This was brilliant. Ty for doing it with a movie I've seen countless times, but never seen in this context. Please make more.
This was fab. I have a few suggestions on script breakdowns:
Casablanca - Why It's the best Screenplay?
Back to The Future - Structure of Time Travel Films
Star Wars vs. Harry Potter - Creating a fantasy world.
Hi I'm from South African and pursuing a career in screenplay writing this channel really helps a lot so thank you
Awesome! Thank you for watching :)
Ive been binge watching your episode since ive gone back to work. When i first started watching I didn't get what you were saying when it came tonthe metaphors and analysis you would use. But now after a writing a few screenplays these videos have helped me more than anything. Your words Michael make more sense to me and its great to have this content as a helping force to write
Finally! A video from Lessons From the Screenplay about my favorite movie. I’m so excited.
The timing of this video was perfect. Just this week I've been writing a sequence where my protagonist joins up with a team, and this was exactly the kind of thing I needed. Awesome job as always.
Awesome!
This right here is why Jaws is still the best shark movie and one of the best movies of all time! It isn't just a monster movie where the monster is the only star we care about like Godzilla or King Kong, the human characters are the real driving force that makes Jaws memorable, as each character has traits and personality differences that makes us sympathize and care about them! To top it all off, Chief Brody is one of the most badass and best protagonists of all time, not cuz he's a superhero wity high tech or a big action hero, but because he has a compelling character arc and traits that make him more human and relatable! I grew up watching the original Jaws and the less good Jaws 2 when i was 8 or 9, at the time when youtube and the internet were in its infancy, and i remember always watching lego videos of jaws, watching the movie on tv, so this movie brings back lots of nostalgia!
This video was amazing! For a writer with a background in stats this format is so my jam. Hope it takes off. Thanks dudes!
I needed this. My amateur story needed some character work. I have their motivations and quirks, but this just helped me think through how they can compliment each other (or complicate things) by gamifying their stats. You guys made it click in my head. Thanks.
You could also check out Brandon Sanderson talking about 'sliders' when writing characters.
Definitely Tier S level work from two favorite RUclipsrs.
Thank you both for this essay! I just love this film!
Do the Lord Of The Rings!
Awesome to see two channels making a video together that highlights the strengths of both
Glad you enjoyed!
Loved this collaboration! More please!
As a kid Jaws scared the hell out of me.
Even just swimming in a pool...you never know, maybe there's a shark
@@LessonsfromtheScreenplay when I was a kid, my brothers would turn out the lights by our pool when I was swimming at night and do the jaws theme. That seriously messed me up.
@@wowmartiean my brothers also used my fear of Jaws to scare me. I never swam at night cause of jaws.
@@mofftarkin6010 they also locked me in the dark basement & play the music from 1977s King Kong when they summoned him for the female sacrifice. My brothers were not nice people.

Lfts + TierZoo = S rank! That was quite a Collab guys. Loved the video absolutely.
Thank you!
This movie, open water, and sharks still scare the shit out of me. Watching this video alone was stressful. But damn, if this wasnt another amazing breakdown. Excellent job, both of you!
I love this! I hope you guys do more of these!
Thanks Adam!
need more of these
One of my all time favorite movies and scores! I enjoyed this video!
i loved this!! how fun to use stats for the explanation😊
I didn't expect the collab, but it turned out pretty good, like the trio of the movie
This collab is bonkers and I am so here for it.
this collab is like the final form of your channel. i wish all ur videos could be like this going forward.
I haven't seen Jaws in over 15 years....this really makes me appreciate the movie more!
I think this also shows how a protagonist can grow and learn from the team he recruits, overcoming his weaknesses and completing his journey.
☝️
Appropriate that by making Jaws, Spielberg was elevated to the top tier too.
This is an absolutely terrific video format. The combination of your two skills blend perfectly.
Please don't let this be a one off... I want to see a breakdown of every movie in the opening montage.
It's still love to see an analysis of a PTA script and film, particularly Magnolia. The focus could be on archetypes, specifically why Magnolia has TWO of each archetype, something I've never seen in a film before. There are two child geniuses, two forlorn men looking for love, two caregivers, two regretful old men dying of cancer, two children with difficult daddy issues - and many of the characters are two of the archetypes at the same time. Example: John C. Reilly is forlorn and caregiver. William H. Macy is child genius and forlorn. It's just a great script and I'd LOVE to see it get the LFTS treatment!
Keep up the good work regardless.
Excellent job, thank you.
Great analysis! The only problem is that I now want you to do this for every movie with team setups... :D
My 2nd favorite spielberg film after schindlers list, please do any Paul Thomas Anderson movie
It is kind of remarkable that we haven't covered any PTA films. I feel like so much of the power of his films come from the filmmaking that amplifies the screenwriting, but there are surely some lessons to extract.
@@LessonsfromtheScreenplay i would like to see you cover one of those 8 films
@@LessonsfromtheScreenplay boogie nights would be a great one :))
another brilliant video! love the collab. would love to see a video about one of ari aster's movies!
Unexpected collab but so, so appreciated!
This would make a great series.
Just saw Jaws last night, perfect timing!
_excellent_ timing!
Would love to see more stats breakdowns of other movies with the two of you!
Never expected this collab
Really not sure what Tierzoo brings to this as a collab, but I guess its kinda cute.
He's faux-quantifying the individual characters' strengths and weaknesses to show why the team was necessary. If the team isn't necessary, then the film's story doesn't work in that way.
Top-Tier Collab! Can this be a reoccurring thing? Examining different teams in cinema and rating their effectiveness?
Great job on this, entertaining and great content as well 👌🏻
This channel is GOLD
Great collab!
Any scene of this movie is genuinely entertaining. As a child, monster movies bored me when there wasn’t a monster on screen- But I loved every minute of Jaws and Jurassic Park, the spectacle was fueled by an interesting group of characters.
Great video, good Collaboration- and it reminds me why I never made it past that opening scene.
45 years of fear to the water.
Awesome video, one of my favorite movies evers, along with Jurassic Park.
This is amazing!
Love both your channels
this was amazing!
Thank you!
Would be great to see an "assembling a top-tier team" of "Seven samurai".
Nice video!
Saw this at a theater the other week, sitting in socially distanced seating with a mask on. I just want to throw out that this movie isn’t even slightly dated, and it has a whole different feeling when you’re cautiously breaking quarantine to see it. The whole “there’s a monster that we see doing damage to human life? Let a couple people go, because ThE eCoNoMy” hit a little different.
I’ve always loved the big fakey shark- it doesn’t look like a real shark, but it instills the same level of fear in me, if not more. I have some serious submechanophobia, so seeing a big unnatural animatronic in the water just skeeves me the heck out.
Batman: “What is a team?”
A group of Alfreds.
I'm always puzzled how the guy with the most famous sidekick and one of the most capable and expansive supporting casts in comic history, who is also a founding member of the Justice League, came to be known as the quintessential "I work alone" superhero.
The Batfamily exists-
@@DerMoerpler The quintessential loner is Iron Man
@@DerMoerpler Yeah its crazy its like everyone forgot the Bat family, the fact that he is a founding member of the Justice League started his own team the Outsiders and works with Jim Gordon all the time
Literally my two favorite channels. This is like the avengers for me.
When TierZoo does a colab with someone new
*a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one*
Fun spin on film thesis!
I disagree on Quint wanting to be the one who kills the shark. I think the elements of his backstory and his erratic actions and decisions are borne out of survivor's guilt. He kills sharks looking for the one that can do him in. He will continue to fight and kill sharks until one is able to rectify his guilt by killing him. Quint destroys the radio and allows the boat to go down because he has finally met his match.
Interesting view
Videos which obviously appreciate »Scott Pilgrim vs. the world« are automatically on my »thumbs up«-list. And: I believe its pure genius to join forces in this context.
Two of my favorite channels.
I liked this video a lot. One thing though, the Chief is a trained police officer. This means using firearms is not alien to him. In game terms he has some investment in pistol and rifle skills. This was a wise choice for his character because it meshes perfectly with the method he ultimately uses to kill the shark. Hooper has his skill point in melee weapons, which is why he fails. The shark is vulnerable to ranged weapons unless your melee fighter is well armored. Hooper was not armored but instead depended on a unique item- a shark cage. Unfortunately the stats on the cage weren't high enough to repel the Great White class of shark boss. Quint seems to have invested his combat skill points into archery and polearms, not enough for a Great White boss shark especially since went all Leeroy Jenkins at the end.
It would be incredible if you could compare this to The Meg in the same way!
this crossover has extreme power
I'd like to see this done with the Ocean's franchise
Ah, Jaws, my favorite JRPG.
You should definitely do this for many other movies as well.
Oh hey Michael! Hope you're doing well through the pandemic and hysteria! I've gone full ostrich and buried my head in a piano. Love TierZoo so much, too! Thanks so much guys! ❤️
Hey Michael love your videos! Don’t know if you’ll see this but all your videos analyze and praise aspects of scripts that you like. Ever thought about analyzing a script you didn’t fully like?

BRilliant! This is a playful yet poignant way of conveying the importance of character design for someone who is just starting out. What were the qualifiers for the characteristics you both chose for this film?
