Yasuke (弥助 or 弥介) was a man, likely of African origin, who served as a servant and retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga in 1581-1582, during the Sengoku period.[2] He was retained by the daimyō as a koshō (小姓, page) for a period of 15 months until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident.

In defense of The Last Samarai, it clearly points out that Tom's character is of European descent, and i believe an American, who fell in love with the warrior culture of Japan and was willing to fight and die to defend it.
It was also a take on something that ACTUALLY HAPPENED. He was never a fully fledged samurai technically as he was never able to learn ALL of what makes a samurai a samurai, but he earned the respect and was allowed to wear the two swords signifying a samurai. He was afforded that right because he learned their language and their ways without disrespecting them. He also fought as they did. He respected them and earned their respect by learning their ways and walking the walk. I forget the man's name but he IS recorded as a Samurai in their history. Yasuke was only on the island for 3 years, was only ever given one sword and never allowed to wear two, thus never a samurai. The only battle he was in, he surrendered right away. The winning side made him hand over his sword...called him a sub-human animal...then kicked him out of Japan. He was not a heroic figure. He was a pet, a human zoo exhibit, that was kept around for the novelty of the color of his skin and the fact he was larger than most of the men. His size is why he was kept around to look intimidating but he was not a good fighter by their standards.
Agreed about Japan. Tokyo is easily the greatest city in the world. What made it this way? 1) They apply the law as it should be applied, and prosecute those who should be prosecuted. 2) They don't seek to seize private businesses, such as the companies that run the train system and Tokyo metro, and instead actually incentivize them. 3) The Japanese people, as a whole, seek to be polite whenever possible as they wish others to be polite to them whenever possible, almost to a fault. It's actually unfortunate to see as a Christian, because the overwhelmingly non-Christian Japan behaves more in line with biblical values than so called Christians in the west.
People using The Last Samurai to compare completely missed the point of the movie. Not only do they not understand the prestige of becoming a samurai, which one cannot just don a fancy armor and wield a katana to become, Tom Cruise's character never became a samurai, and the "last samurai" in the movie was never about him.

Hold on. So if you're playing a black assassin in Japan, wouldn't that mean you'd literally be spending the entire game as a black guy beating up Asians?
I hate identity politics but this time I think you are wrong Yasuke was a samurai first black African samurai he served as right-hand of Nobunaga, not too much is known about this, but historians says that he wilded katana and samurai armor.
Yeah, Bayek is supposed to be an ancient Egyptian but they tried to make him look as black as they could. Ancient Egyptians weren't black. The small amount of black ancestry you see in modern Egypt is the result of the Arab slave trade over the past 700 years. Egyptians before that had virtually no black ancestry. Ubisoft can't help but blackwash everything.
@@cyberedge881 Yep very true but I admit, Bayek was a 3rd favorite AC protagonist after Ezio & Alexios for me. They could have easily done another game with Bayek for me
As a Japanese, I have stayed away from the concepts of "walkness" and "political correctness" as practiced in the West. This is because these concepts were born primarily in the Western context. In this case, however, I feel that part of our history has been revised and the Japanese protagonist has been deliberately avoided. I am a little surprised it has done by them cause it's gonna be completely oppositte from the idea of "political correctness".
I discovered Yasuke back in 2005, and there was barely any information about him, even on wikipedia just 2 paragraphs basically saying he's unknown. Fastforward to today and he's everywhere in the internet, dozens of articles about the guy. What the hell...Now I'm annoyed.
Yeah, there really wasn't much to say about him. Overall he didn't do anything, and we probably wouldn't even know his name if he wasn't African. It'd be like if we all knew the name of Washington's groomsman in the revolutionary war because he was Chinese. It's not a mark of distinction by itself.
Guys...Here's a solution... New Game.... choose female or male .... and next make a freakin character customization, just like in RPG games... skin colour, hair presets etc...I think it would be fair enough in the AC games as well...
I've played and enjoyed every AC game at launch. One of my most anticipated series every time. I'm done. Find the 1 black guy in the huge rich history of Japan to make your main character? F off Ubisoft...
@varanisshouyou4379 same. The other weird thing is that in every other AC game, you play a fictional character that interacts with historical figures. Why are you suddenly playing as a historical character? You didn't play as Leonardo Da Vinci, did you?
Last Samurai was not dumb, and the white guy was not the last samurai in that movie, he just wore a samurai's armor at one point after living in the guy's home and learning from them and then he told the story of the real last samurai to the emperor at the end.
Tom Cruise was NOT a samurai in that movie. He was a US military advisor for the Emperor, and got caught by the Samurai. He switched sides, and learned their ways. Ironically, the movie is about the culture war in Japan as it became westernized.
I don't know, this doesn't really bother me. It's a GAME not a historical documentary. There should be options for the players; a female, a black samurai, a white samurai and an asian samurai, let the player choose the characteristics they want to play. It's not that big of a deal, this is NOT the hill on which to die.
That's a good point. I'm willing to try the game out and see what they do with Yasuke's character. Hopefully it's a good game first and I've liked the characters from Odyssey and Valhalla. Hopefully they don't ruin these new characters.
Honestly it doesn't really bother me either because at least it was a real person, but we still know that Ubisoft's only intentions here were good boy points. But some people are gonna go nuclear over this cause they have nothing better to do with their time.
I'm glad I stopped playing this series back in BlackFlag. Also, previous AC games have had players take control of original characters who interact with historical figures of the time and place. If Yasuke was a retainer in Feudal Japan, then he's an actual historical figure and it just ruins the whole idea and history of these games.

How many of the articles and whatnot are reasonably accurate?
Yeah, there really wasn't much to say about him. Overall he didn't do anything, and we probably wouldn't even know his name if he wasn't African. It'd be like if we all knew the name of Washington's groomsman in the revolutionary war because he was Chinese. It's not a mark of distinction by itself.
