Many graded purchases are from people who will crack the slab and get the card signed. On this basis, a lot of the cards of wrestlers who are still alive sell for more those who are deceased.
I'm not as knowledgeable about the set as many other people, but I know that certain cards in the set are tougher to find in the higher grades, if not impossible. Some of them were always packed at the top or bottom vs. the middle (every set is the same order in the cello wrap), some were cut off-center more frequently due to their positioning on the full sheet, and long story short it means that certain cards are tougher grades than others. From there, a handful of collectors are VERY competitive around this set on the PSA registry. People are trying to upgrade their sets and move up the rankings. If someone can upgrade an 8 to a 9, even in an obscure name, and especially in one of the cards where it's tough find in the first place, I think that's where we see those skewed numbers that don't seem to make sense.
My guys at the local card shops keep saying Wrestling cards are undervalued. To be honest, if you want to collect the WAS set, now is the time me thinks
look at the pop counts. absurdly hard to find in high grade. side note on the all star cards....did you see someone has a complete set that is supposedly sealed on ebay?
