No, Beasties are considered by most, as main pioneers, after Check Your Head and Paul's Boutique, it was clear to this day that these cats were GOATS. BB helped hip-hop evolve artistically, and I credit them for their influence on the backpack era. But more importantly, musically along with the Dust Brothers, they took the artform to new heights, and did it so effortlessly it seemed. I remember when Check Your Head came out, I was in Atlanta, so many of my friends were like, damn we have to hit the lab and make more original powerful beats!!. That was the consensus back then. Beasties were never to play with and it was agreed that these cats would be the Janice Joplins of hip hop (sorry for the comparison but it only approximates at how powerful Beasties were.)
I could go on and on about the BB's legacy. B-Boy Bouillabasse is a creative masterpiece, as it contains tons of little vignettes highlighting how far they took sampling and music tapestry. To me, Paul's Boutique is still ahead artistically of most hip hop albums to this day. Like Rakim took lyricism to new heights, Paul's Boutique, thanks to the Dust Brothers, took sampling [along with Prince Paul's with De La, Bomb Squad with Public Enemy, Premier with Group Home and Gangstarr, Pete Rock with CL Smooth and Nas, Kurtis Mantronix with Just-Ice, Jungle Brothers with Done By The Forces of Nature, Paul C with Ultramagnetic MC's] to an unbelievable creative height that to this day is unmatched. The closest to Paul's Boutique is Madlib's Quasimoto and the Adventures of Lord Quas I would say.
Heard this on Rock the bells yesterday and was blown away. Stet with a hitter and this song was long overdue from somebody. RIP Plug 2, KMG, Pimp C, Yusef Afloat, Gift of Gab, Gerald and Sean Levert, MJ and Prince as well.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE -- I remember the last time I danced when DJ BizMarkie was the on the 1 and 2's .. classic.. Zulute To all Fallen Soldiers on the other side, eye carry your spirit and I can hear it.. Thank you STETSASONIC on this fuegovision track
Loooove the visuals!!!!! Nice lyrics. Tbh I had to come back to watch the video. Immediately sparked nostalgia and there went the floodgates! I wasn't ready for the visuals.
A chill and respectful memoriam to some of the greatest rappers of all time who were all instrumental in building what we have now. Let's keep putting out great music to honor them all. Its hard not to be stunned while listening to this track at the sheer amount of talented artists who have passed away too soon in this relatively young music genre. Thank you for reminding us throughout this poignant song, how far rap has come and how many have contributed to it.
So many fallen soldiers, voices of the truth. Pray they all are resting in paradise and feel all the love we have for them. Each and every one. Thank you STET for this one. Feelings run deep, but needed to be said.
Awesome piece of art right here. We miss those great artists gone too soon. I realize there can't be all of anything but was there a fallen soldier NOT in this tribute? I appreciate Stet and this great tribute.
Add Gangsta Boo & Trugoy the Dove/Plug 2 from De La Soul to the list also. 😢Salute to Stetsasonic for listing the fallen soldiers of Hip Hop. More to come ☠️, unfortunately. Rest In Peace & Power. ✊🏿✌🏿🙏🏿
Hard to watch, grew up with them all, been down since 81 and if it wasn’t for Hip Hop I wouldn’t be here-Fact. Ya also gotta look and have a thought for all the others that gave us places to go in our heads when times got tough, I remember hearing on Mike Allen that Scott La Rock passed and that was the ‘Big’ name for me, and then the list just didn’t stop, hurts man, it does, just a personal roll call to JMJ, Biz (Still hurts today) DMX, Heavy D, Big L, Eazy, Ecstasy, Tupac, ODB, Guru, , Prodigy, Nate Dogg, Mr Magic (another hard one to take) Tim Dog, Phife, MF DOOM, Bushwick Bill, (We Can’t Be Stopped, dope album), Prince Markie Dee n Buff Love, (another group I was all up on and never forget that Krush Groove ‘All You Can Eat’ 🍕) Craig Mack, Black Rob (another fly album that I bumped for what seemed like years) Ms Melodie, (mad huge love for BDP and Krs) MCA (still got my VW badge in my attic) Derek B (that ‘Bad Young Brother) and last but not least Big Pun. Those for me are the voices I miss, the tracks they produced and life they gave me and I will never ever be anything else than ‘Real’ Hip Hop through and Through, respect to Daddy-O (not the K) and Stetsasonic for an amazing dedication, ✊🏼🙏🏼 Love, Purpose n Peace MCD
