The cancer was in the eye itself, so the eye would've had to be removed. In humans, scans that find eye cancer really early can sometimes allow for it to be treated with radiotherapy, but it's rare to catch it that early and almost always ends with innucliation, and even with radiothetapy there still potential vision loss anyway. Given cows don't have opticians or regular eye scans, or an option for radiotherapy, innucliation is the only realistic option. Cows get their eye cancer generally as a type of skin cancer.

Normally they raise their last calf and then they exit the herd as there is a risk the other eye could develop cancer as well. The susceptibility is heritable. If she heals well (99% of the time the cancer doesn’t come back) she would be eligible for human consumption.
As a virtual vet sitting at home I’ve. eye removal from my chair and I can say it’s my least favorite procedure. C-sections, births, even abscesses are better than eye removal. It falls in the category of you do what you have to do and talk about it later.
It is a huge relief for the cow I think. They blow up quickly and must be pretty painful. They heal really really quickly and I believe the cows are pretty happy afterwards. I hope that helps! Cheers!

Due to the exceptional blood supply to the head, these heal fantastically well. The closure is the hemostasis. I reckon a drain would create more risk, though some veterinarians due advocate their use. I’ve done hundreds of these with great success with this technique. Great question! Cheers!

Reminds of the old school nurses when I was right out of school. Witnessed one packing a large stage 4 wound without gloves. I’m sure he has his reason just doesn’t look right. I still gave him a thumbs up seems like a caring and experienced Vet.

The cancer was in the eye itself, so the eye would've had to be removed. Sadly, Herefords are prone to developing SCC eye cancers. Dang it! I love them too!
They are my grandfather raised them in Kentucky. My mother, my aunt and I all showed them as kids..

That is a lot of lignocaine. Too much can affect their heart by causing AV block, especially goats incidentally. She was well blocked. Cheers!
