Congratulations to Bruce Johnson on your upcoming retirement at the end of the year. Bruce has been with the station almost 45 years. He's the only left from the WTOP-TV era. Channel 9 will not be the same without you.
9 Eyewitness News: Where the local news comes first [The Schedule]. 4pm: Mike Buchanan, Beverly Burke and Doug Hill. 5pm: J.C. Hayward, Mike Buchanan, Doug Hill and Jess Atkinson. 6pm & 11pm: Gordon Peterson, Andrea Roane, Doug Hill and Jess Atkinson.
Bruce Johnson is also the last survivor of the WTOP-TV era still working at Nine. He was also one the hosts of "Harambee", a very successful black issues program. ("Harambee" is Swahili for "let's pull together".)
WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV) was very first television station owned by The Washington Post Company which purchase back in 1950 under joined venture of CBS and The Washington Post newspaper. Here about history about Channel 9 in Washington, D.C. under Post-Newsweek Stations ownership: CBS and The Washington Post joined in 1950 to purchase WOIC-TV from Bamberger/Macy's. The station became WTOP-TV, the sister station to WTOP Radio. The stations moved into a new facility called “Broadcast House” in 1954. The Washington Post fully acquired the WTOP stations later in 1954. The Post later merged the WTOP stations with a cluster of station in Jacksonville, FL, to become Post Stations. When The Washington Post purchased Newsweek magazine in 1961, the group was renamed Post-Newsweek Stations. in the Fall of 1971 WTOP-TV adopted the “Eyewitness News” brand. In late 1974, WTOP and the other Post-Newsweek stations adopted the slogan “The One and Only. Post Newsweek swapped WTOP-TV for the Evening News Association’s WWJ-TV, Detroit, in 1978. WTOP became WDVM. ending the Post ownership after 28 years. others Post-Newsweek Stations (now Graham Media Group) has once or still relationship with CBS: WJXT Jacksonville, FL (former WMBR-TV, 1953-2002). WFSB Hartford-New Haven, CT (former WTIC-TV, 1974-1997). and WKMG-TV Orlando, FL (former WDBO-TV, then WCPX-TV, 1997-present).
My favorite announcers are Charlie Van Dyke and Mike Lewis, and the opening intro: "Serving Virginia, Maryland, and the District, This is WUSA 9 News".
I heard some excellent v/o's done by Bob Dalton, John Douglas, Bill Neal and Mike Lewis. All were terrific staff announcers at Nine. Before coming to Nine, Neal was a morning man on WBAL radio (then a music station) in Baltimore. Douglas was also a weatherman from 1956-70. Renee Chaney was also an announcer at Nine whilst working at WGMS,too. She was perhaps the first female to do so.

Nine has the most call signs of any D.C. station (WOIC, WTOP, WDVM and W*USA). When Nine started in 1949, it had the CBS network; there was a proposed television network the Mutual Broadcasting System was going to start, but it never really got off the ground. The MBS Network was going to be a companion network on Nine.
In 2015, The Gannett Company Inc had split into two companies. Its broadcasting and digital media divisions are now called TEGNA, the remaining part of the company, including its newspapers and print media [USA Today & USA Weekend] are called GANNETT
Channel 9 is going through some changes also just like Channel 4 (WRC NBC 4) and Channel 7 (WJLA ABC 7) Their changes are primarily mornings and weekends: New Morning team: Andrea Roane, Nick Giovanni, and Allyson Rae (weather) Mike Hydeck will anchor the new weekend morning news. Erica Grow moves to weekend mornings. Debra Alfarone joins Bruce Johnson on the weekend team. Howard Bernstein moves from the weekday mornings to weekend evenings. Roane/ Hydeck/ Giovanni will alternate doing the noon news.
I hope y'all will reply to this WUSA 9 the Washington, DC CBS affiliate owned by TEGNA broadcasting up til 1987 used the same music that WCVB 5 the Boston, Massachusetts ABC affiliate used on their newscasts
Robert Funderburkejr I wouldn't be shocked if Maureen Bunyan and Doug Hill eventually retire within 3 years. If you count their Channel 9 years, Maureen has been on the air over 40 years and Doug over 30 years. They haven't done the 11pm newscast in years. I don't see Andrea Roane leaving soon. She's only doing the early morning news or occasionally the Noon News.
+Charles allen jr Both Maureen and Doug signed new multi year contract following the Sinclair purchase of WJLA owner Allbrittion so it's likely they will be on tv for the next 5 years in DC.
@Justin Mclamb Channel 9 has never been the same since Gordon Peterson, Maureen Bunyan, and Doug Hill left channel 9 for WJLA (ABC7) Mike Buchannan retired. Something happened J.C. Hayward that she never got a proper send off. Bruce and Andrea were the last of Channel 9's "core group" when Channel 9 was the station. Andrea retired last year. Bruce is the only one left.
@@MyBusinessNotyours81 @Charles Allen Jr. Many of the group who had been with WUSA were all in attendance at the memorial serv. for Bruce Johnson incl. Maureen Bunyan, Andrea Roane & Gordon Peterson.

easily my favorite that Gannet packages have done is these 1982-1987through to 1991 ones

Bruce Johnson and Andrea Roane are now the two longest tenured anchors at Channel 9 still left. Bruce is over 40 years and Andrea is nearing 37 years.
