Hi everyone! I've had a lot of people ask me whether or not the kookaburra birds let me pet/pat them so I thought I'd make a video about it! I just don't do it very often because I don't know whether or not they like it and don't want to make them feel uncomfortable!
And the whole time you can hear a female guinea fowl calling in the background 😅
If you would like to support Australian wildlife and the production of future videos you can buy me a $1 coffee here: www.buymeacoffee.com/bboa
50% of the funds will be donated to various wildlife charities and the other 50% will go towards production costs of future videos allowing me to create higher quality videos showcasing a wider range of Australian animals.
Please check with your local wildlife experts before offering any food to the native wildlife in your area. What I offer these birds is an occasional treat and only a tiny portion of their overall diet.

Part of the issue is the approach. Animals really don't like it when something is coming from above specifically.

gotta say, I've never understood the calling of patting "petting", makes no sense to me. I actually thought you'd left out a word, "are" & meant to say "they are like pets", still not actually sure if you meant that or if you meant they like patting. They scream/groan like a kid having the dirt wiped off their face by their mom. My dog makes the same sounds. Are they happy, or just respectfully tolerating this weird human behavior?
I would recommend you not to let your dog come close to children without a muzzle. When birds make this kind of sounds, it's funny. When dogs do it, it means danger.

Good analogy, now I can't unsee it. Remote workers are birds
Bird like to have their feathers gently ruffled up, not smoothed down, especially if you can use your fingernails to gently rub the skin and feather shafts. That reminds them of another bird preening them and they’ll fluff out their feathers slightly. When they smooth in their feathers tightly it’s usually because they’re frightened or wary, so smoothing the feathers down is less pleasant feeling. I learned this from my parrots.
My parrot can barely say 'Hi'. How long before he can give lectures on bird biology like yours ???
@@rohan1748 😁
@@rohan1748 lol, I mean my parrot will snuggle up tonme and fluff up hos headfeathers to get scratches, so I assume body language tells you that.

_Original comment below:_
When petting a bird, it's always smart and better to bring your hand in from the side instead of over the top. Over the top scares them and that's why they look up and try to bite, since they feel vulnerable. From the side makes them feel less vulnerable, and is a better way to gain their trust. I've been taught this by an expert on hawks and falcons.

Kookaburras: 🥺
Kookaburras should be all over the world. They are so cute and funny.
They are all over the world. They are just known by a different name. Kingfishers.
Kingfishers in England are very shy and retiring; you are lucky to see one...and they are never heard laughing!🤔 In fact, their calls are a shrill whistle.
@@newbotany and the kingfishers here is South Africa are a bit of both. Some are shy like the Malachite and Pygmy Kingfishers with whistles for calls. While some are not shy at all and you can get very close to them before they fly off like our Giant Kingfisher. Just different species. But the Kookaburra is just another Kingfisher species. 😜
@@alastairstedman7840 Thanks Alastair, nice to hear about the South African Kingfishers.

I love how the new girl at the end was scared until she realized nothing bad would happen- her body language went from 'ah heck, big human, fingers, grr, gotta snap at human' to 'oh... well this ain't so bad, huh'
Kookaburra's normally eat snakes, so fingers look like snakes to them.
This family must get fed regularly by this person for them to be so calm and trusting of her.
The one thing I would do differently is to pat them from the side, not from above, or even go for a scratch under the chin.
Most animals don't trust a hand coming from abover their head, they see it as a threat!
if you keep your hand below their eyeline, they don't feel as threatened.
the sounds in this video are the most iconic Australian 6AM window sounds of all time.
Obviously these beautiful special birds & an other species I’m sure ,find your aura very predictable & trustworthy , which in turn creates a very strong comfort zone for them ! Good 👍 for you & all of them !

Where I live there is a vacant lot/small park across the road. An older lady who lives next to it put in a bird bath/feeder, and it gets a LOT of traffic - mostly magpies, pigeons and finches. The magpies try to bully the other birds, and they chase off the pigeons. But when the magpies go after the finches, a kookaburra that lives in a nearby stand of gum trees chases the magpies off. The kookaburra will then perch on the birdbath, looking after his little mates. they will often fly off together, one kookaburra an 3-6 finches. It's beautiful to watch, and I've seen it play out much the same way about a dozen times.
I would love to see a video of that o.o, not so much the bullying, tho seeing all the types of birds would be great, but the Kooka-Finch group
