A huge thank you for these clear and simple explanations. Besides guiding us through the process, it's a real explanation, and it gives us an understanding of how Google Tag Manager thinks and works.
Thank your videos! Super helpful! When I set the generic link click trigger it shows up twice. No idea why it's doing that. Any ideas. I only have one link click tricker set up.
Hi Julian, vielen Dank das is sehr hilfreich!^^ Just a question, can I apply the instruction in your track link click video to affiliate links as well?
Great video. I do have a question. I am using Pretty Links (a Link Cloaker for WordPress) for all of my external affiliate links. How do I track these links as they are external but not showing as external due to the link cloaker. The URL for a cloaked link would be domain.com/out/XXXX . Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you for the tutorial. I'm having issues where my outbound link click variable is False (the link directs to an amazon page). Do you know why it's doing this?
Very useful, thank you so much for your sharing, can you please share the tips on tracking the inbound affiliate link source of different pages by GTM too?
Great video as always bro. What you can include next time is also how to use a lookup table variable, that is configured based on Click URL. By doing this, you'll have the data analysis process in GA easier. It'll take a while, but I think it's worthy it.
Is there any way to know the page where the click happened? If we have buttons on different pages saying "buy now", we might get multiple clicks on a "buy now", but we wouldn't know on which page it took place. At least I didn't see that in your video. Thanks for your time :)
Great tutorial. I'm a little confused about the "Non-Interaction Hit" option being set to True or False. I'm tracking outbound links. If someone clicks on an outbound link, I want that to be considered a bounce. Does that mean I select True or False?

Great video! I have a question, I have created the event following your steps but I would like to set up the event as a goal on GA. I tried to do it but it's not tracking it as a goal, it keeps tracking it as an event only. Would you be able to help?
Julian, thanks so much for this. I noticed in my Google Analytics report, that the Event Action is showing as "undefined" in my Real Time Reporting. I think this is because it's an image, which goes to another URL. How can get my images to be Categorized correctly in the Event Action using a Variable? #DataDrivenMarketing #GA #GTM #GoogleAnalytics #TrackExternalLinks
Nice. But i would like to know how many sales my affiliate link made. Because I'm getting link clicks but i don't know if I actually made any sales. Is there a way? That I can put my link and and see how many sales that link generated?
@measureschool Do you have to connect the tag to Google Analytics or can you connect through Google Ads Conversions? I was trying to connect a outbound click to google maps, could that the reason why its not firing for me?
VG Alex.
Hello Julian - First of all, many thanks for such a helpful video. I am trying to track an outbound link on my blog and followed your instructions exactly. It fires just as you describe, but I can't see anything on Google Analytics Real Time report. Could it be due to: 1) The outbound link I'm trying to track is a banner image (not text), so should I choose a different variable than "Click Text" for the Action? 2) For Google Analytics Settings, I choose the "Enable overriding settings in this tag" and enter my tracking ID. Should I enter the id just as is or should I put it between curly braces, like {{UA-999999-9}}. Those are the only things I can think of. Any help would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
Thanks for the Video. I have already settled up those things but it was not working. And later figure out *uOrigin is the culprit.* It blocks Google Tag Manager too.
Great video! I'm tryin to make this a goal in GA then use that goal in Google Optimize. But when I go to verify the goal by entering "External Link Click" in the custom field it shows that nothing happens. Then when I try to use Google Optimize to split test I can't specify a goal. I'll sign up for your monthly sub tomorrow. I watched your vid on Google Optimize install, and then read your comments and I guess the Google Guide is updated to use Optimize with Tag Manager now. I'm lost.

Hi Julian, great tutorial. A question for you. I run a job advertising website. When a company advertises a job they can use their own company URL to have applicants apply directly. How would be best to monitor apply for job clicks per company that advertises. Tags or UTM codes please. Im a litle confused. Thank you in advance
I would use events, not UTMs. UTMs are only visible by the company that advertises (might be something you'd like to install additionally, but it's not going to help you count clicks)
Awesome video as always! One of the marketing channels for my business includes hanging posters around town. Many of the posters have a QR code on them. Upon scanning, users are directed to an opt-in page to download a free eBook and hopefully go further into the funnel. How can I track QR code scans and conversions to better understand how effective this form of marketing is? Thanks again!
Thanks great video. But it doesn't seem to track when the user opens the link in a new tab by right clicking and opening it in a new tab. Is there any way to get around that?
Great video Julian. I learned a lot. All is well but when I checked my tag assistant, It doesnt appear to have the google analytics on result tag analysis. I only got the green one which is google tag manager. May I know if I missed something or did wrong? Thanks for your answer. Been watching all your tutorials about GTM and GA! Subs to you man
It sucks that he did not answer this question. Because it seems to still be requiring UA- but you can't create that anymore in Google analytics. Not that I'm aware of. It's forcing ga4 on you.
But I did a little research and saw that you can still create a UA. You just have to select Advanced options when you're creating it and choose to do it. It'll get phased out in 2023 so I'm sure they will change the option by then.
Great tutorial Julian, as usual! I guess if we have an online store with external products only, we should use this tracking approach and not the Enhanced eCommerce options?

I want track how many users leave my website from checkout page with this particular link. how can I do this?
Hey Julian, great channel and great content, I'm a subscriber! I have one question related to your video: Is it possible to setup a goal in GA which is triggered by an UTM-parameter? I have not succeeded in doing this so if you know a way I would be grateful.
yes, there is a way, but why? Coming from a source is generally not a goal or something you want your user "todo" - besides you can already look up that data in your acquisition reports
@@MeasureSchool The "why" is obviously a good counter-question, and I had a use case for this situation a couple of months ago, which I now have forgotten about. So the next time I arrive at a situation where this is needed I'll let you know then :)
How about creating a new video just like this one, but teaching people to create an audience based off the Event so people can remarket specifically to Visitors who clicked on an outbound link?
Very interesting, but if you do affiliate marketing, you are mostly interested in tracking the actual conversions, sales and revenues rather than "clicks".
Amazing how everyone considers this a great tutorial, but you didn't test this without holding Ctrl when clicking. How does this work for external links that don't open in a new tab and you don't use wait for tag? That's probably why some people complain it doesn't work for them, and why internal link clicks doesn't work.
