He is Korean. The reason why it’s in Japan is because the award show was held there. The songs they sung in this video is in Korean - English. However, they are all fluent in Japanese and have Japanese versions and albums, which they used to promote in Japan market!

It started the trend of kpop idols dyeing their hair and was the first time a song in Korean made the American billboard charts and was the biggest hit in Asian music history. For about 4 months then PSY dropped Gangnam style. I'm mad at that song because PSY hasn't rapped since. PSY is a dope rapper. PYS's Fact Assault featuring G dragon was dope ass hell.

GD worked with Skrillex before "dirty vibe" and both work with Diplo. GD and TOP had feat. With Pixie Lott. In early bigbang GD worked with Maroon 5. GD had the copyright to Maroon 5 song, GD rewrote it in Korean "this love". You should check it out.

Hahaha, the confusion over kpop, jpop, ppop! We usually name it after the country where the band is formed. So Bigbang is still kpop eventhough they have original japanese songs which are not translations of their korean songs. And many kpop groups have members who are not koreans. I heard there is a full japanese by nationality group based in Korea who release korean songs. So are they kpop or jpop 🤷♂? So things are all blended now.
Fun fact - The comments section of the G-Dragon MAMA 2024 has turned into a nation-wide group chat for the koreans 😂! The commenters have divided themselves into attending morning class and evening class to stream the video, they encourage each other to watch the video on their way to school/work and back from school/work! Thats why it hit 20mil views so fast!
One funny comment says he has developed a romantic relationship with the video, thinking about it when he is not watching it and watching it the minute he gets home 🤣!

MAMA is a Korean music award ceremony held by the Korean cable network M-net. It's a Korean show but it had been held in Hong Kong every year since 2012 up until the pandemic. This year they chose to hold it in Osaka. K-pop is Korean pop and J-pop is Japanese pop which was really really influential in Asia talking about 30, 40 years ago. Japan is still the second biggest music market without considering China. And Big Bang is also 'surprise surprise' very popular in China. So many crazy things happened in China It's scary.
J-pop has been popular in some Southeast Asian countries, but not in Korea,
and has never achieved global popularity like K-pop culture.

It’s so crazy to see how far kpop has grown. I got into it back in 2007 when Big bang was still fresh in the industry. Ive attended korean concerts when it was still weird for non koreans to attend lol so seeing a bunch of new reactors get into Big Bang now is insane and oddly interesting.

*sigh* Sorry this might be long but just had to help with background....That "pink hat" is a crown👑 Because GD is the king of kpop🙌🏽 (South Korean pop). There are generations to kpop and GD (and Big Bang) are the 2nd Gen (official debut 2006) that put Kpop on the global stage, before BTS (caution: there are fanwars over this). Big Bang had 5 members, GD was/is the leader/song writer/rapper/composer/production everything - perfectionist. But now there are only 3 members, which is a whole saga, in itself. Basically this comeback is NOSTALGIC for every Kpop fan from the 2000s. Every minutia of this comeback stage, under stage set up, his outfit, crown, songs chosen, dance choreo and lyrics speaks to GDs "dynasty" as a musician, artist and fashionista (ambassador for several brands--what he wears sells out, starts trends). He's won every award, including one that MAMA made up for him after this performance😅 He's the only Kpop artist to have hit songs top the charts in three separate decades. So yah he's the GOAT of Asian pop.👑🙌🏽💞

G-Dragon goes back to when YG was a tour de force. The very first G-Dragon track i remember was when he appeared on fellow YG Orgional labelmate's album Rush.
Lexy was goated as f*** and was not only the first female solo artist signed under YG. She was one of the best having helped with fellow YG trainee's CL & Bom before they become 2NE1.
I believe G-Dragon was maybe 21 when Super Fly come out. Which Feat T.O.P. and Tae Yang as well. Bom appeared on Lexy track Baby Boy. Which was before 2NE1 debut.

KPOP also known as Hallyu Wave stems out from Canto Pop - the biggest pop culture wave in Asia during the 80s and 90s. Cantonese Pop industry experienced dark days due to political reasons - and so Korean Pop emerged and has been the biggest pop culture (Hallyu Wave) in asia and other parts of the world since early 2000s. There are popular and global first gen kpop artists such as Rain, G.O.D, etc. but there popularity was contained in Asia. G-DRAGON is a second gen kpop artist and that's when it really started to strike globally - along with other popular kpop artists - 2ne1, Wondergirls, Girl's Generation, etc. Second generation was the golden age of KPOP. That is why in the song power, GD mentioned that he's from a generation of limited edition.
Kpop became mainstream in the US/west during the 3rd gen era - BTS, Blackpink -- due to more marketing and networking resources.
But even when it wasn't as mainstream on GD's era as it is now, he was will respected by other artists and fashion figures around the world. He is a boy-de-chanel and is a muse of Karl Lagerfield. He is friends with Justin Bieber, Pharell, Rihanna, among other popular celebrities.
