- One of the areas of language learning that will improve over the next five years is the availability of intermediate level content. Not too boring, not too simple and yet not too difficult. Olly Richards is working to help meet this demand.

Nice to see 2 people I like and admire speak together. Thanks for the great tips guys
Nice to see you Johan!
if there is a polyglot mafia, then Steve is our Godfather
Haha!
Love you both. Ollie’s Short Stories and 101 Conversations are awesome.
I like your teaching
Esther’s Media 文明英语 oh, thank you. 🙏🏼
Thanks AEWTG!
@@storylearning My pleasure. Big fan. I'm reading the short story about the creature at the lake house for the 100th time now. ;)
I think LingQ needs a lot more stories for learners at different levels. It’s amazing how interesting the story the three little pigs is when it’s in a new language.
Love Olly’s books, I have the one for Portuguese and Swedish. They’re great for building confidence and help get you comfortable thinking entirely in a new language and stop translating in your head.
Really pleased you like the books Thomas!
Olly's "Short Stories in French for Beginners" was the first French book I read from cover to cover. I highly recommend it to anyone struggling to get out of the "translation" mindset where you feel like you need to understand every word / grammar point. Olly's books are great for increasing your tolerance for ambiguity and getting used to reading naturally.
I completely agree although I use Spanish
That's wonderful, thank you!
please do more interviews with Olly Richard. I really had enjoyed this videos. I’m going to watch it again.
Great idea :)
I like Olly’s short stories series in different languages. Thank you for the interesting insights ❤️
Thanks!
It’s funny how Olly is more old school than his senior Steve. Love both these guys.
That’s an interesting comment about concentration. I have always thought learning language is a balance between knowing when you need extreme concentration and letting your brain relax and learn.
I agree. You need both sides!
What you’re talking about about being a teacher at the very end - I couldn’t agree more. I’m an entrepreneur and private language coach in Taiwan. I teach other foreigners Chinese and getting people to become independent learners is always one of my goals. It is very difficult to do however. People just want it all to happen fast and without effort. Sadly that’s not how it works!
I must say Olly Richards' books which I have in Spanish and Italian (but focusing on only Spanish) are fantastic. I might buy a hard copy of his 101 conversations
You're fantastic too!
I think the biggest impediment is impatience. People lose their motivation very quickly when they are told " it takes years/ it's taken me years blah blah etc " Boom ! their enthusiasm has hit the rocks before they begin. We need to find a way to inject tons of enthusiasm from the word go. We need to get it into perspective " it is not a race, enjoy the ride ! "
Dealing with ambiguity is the other big reason people lose motivation.
My deep thanks for "Short stories in Icelandic" plus the Audio to this book. I also bought the Spanish audio. Get the gist of the story in Spanish, try to understand in the developing language (Icelandic).
The whole time I was waiting for Olly to say "we have the stories in Arabic!" and finally did right at the end XD
Haha, it didn't occur to me till the end. I make the mistake of assuming people know about everything I do... and realise that people have other things they care a lot more about than me :)
@@storylearning I can't wait for the Korean one to be released!
Always enjoy listening to these two Language Facilitators; such a wealth of practical knowledge. Rag chewing at its best!
Thanks guys....paul
Think that both of you and many others are revolutionizing the way languages should be taught. You are quite ahead of the sterile teaching method implemented in many schools.
Thanks for the feedback!
Can we please get Olly's books uploaded to Lingq? I wouldn't have an issue with paying for it.
We're working on it, right @steve?
Olly, I've thoroughly enjoyed your books. I have bought the audio and the text, but I wish I could integrate them into Lingq. It would be a another great channel for your books and for Lingq to grow its resource base.
امس استقبلت الكتاب عن العربية لOlly وهذا رئعا! انا عتقدت انه ازيد سهل لكن الان اعرف ان ساقضى بعض زمن دراسه! شكراً Olly وSteve!
13:44 today we have a lot of resources we can choose but you kind of feel lost because a lot of contents you don't know with you are studying the right way.
Yes, I have Olly's Arabic Short Stories and have recommended it to my Arabic teacher, too. It's very useful.
History is stories too!
I think the value of Olly Richards' approach is in the nature of narratives, which can be either fictional or non-fictional.
Very interesting conversation explaining “the stuck in the rut” psyche of some language learners.
I totally agree with the distraction idea.I get so distracted when online. There seems to be too much info out there now it requires a lot of focus.
My two favorite polyglots!
Steve, it's nice of you to bring on a guest and then tell him you don't like his approach. Maybe not insult the guests, regardless of what language you do it in. I think Olly's use of stories is another valuable tool in the toolbox that helps makes language acquisition fun and accessible.
Why is it that so many people today think that it is insulting to not agree with someone? Is there a basic flaw in our education system?
To be fair I think Steve said his preference was for history over stories. So more of a personal preference and it did lead on to Olly introducing his history content. History of course is a story too.
If you have an interview or conversation with anyone, anywhere and have the nerve to interrupt them mid-sentence, there must be a flaw in your manners, Steve. Unacceptable even from someone in their 70s. Doesn't matter what language you learn or how many speakers there are. No native will want to make your acquaintance so why does it matter? Learn some manners before languages because clearly, ika'y mokong talaga
@@michaelrespicio5683 i wouldn't have picked up that last sentence if I were not Filipino haha, would Steve even understand that if he had read it?
Großartig🎉🌞🌞
I'm a new subscriber. And I want to said that I love you so much and the ways you talk too. You make me reminisce to my grandpa. I was listening all the videos of you to practising my listening skill and speaking too😁
Tar, it's so funny, to me Steve resembles my father (also a passionate language learner) by his way of speaking and manners. All the more reasons to enjoy Lingq:)
I like Olly's books but I don't like the fact that he does not credit the actual translators of the texts. I mean, he might have written the original stories in English, but now the stories have been translated into languages Olly has never claimed to speak, like, say, Norwegian, Icelandic or Turkish. But if you take a look at the books, there is no reference whatsoever to the person who necessarily has to have translated the stories. I think it's not very nice to do that, imho.
If Olly doesn't know those languages and the translators were not credited, it certainly is unfair. It gives people the impression that either he's taking credit for the translator's work and that he actually knows certain langauges but never actually spoke them on video to prove it.
We always credit the translators in my self-published books (101 Conversations etc), but I hadn't realised they weren't credited in the Short Stories books with Teach Yourself. I will speak to the publishers about this, because I agree with you completely! Thank you for the feedback.
In my Icelandic "Short stories" book there is mentioned a Series Editor(R. Moeller) and the Development Editor (H. Jónsdóttir).
Hi Steve, you mentioned that you haven't found movies in standard Arabic. What do you think about TV series where they dramatise real historical events and personalities? There are tons of these shows only in standard Arabic made in Egypt and Syria. I would recommend watching the series called Omar which chronicles the life of Omar bin Khattab who was one of the closest companions to the prophet Muhammad. You can easily obtain the English subtitles from the Internet.
Just another way that sanctions are prohibiting society! It's not just about Persians, it's about how we can engage and learn about Iran, too! I'm with you, Steve. Quality, modern intermediate Persian content is very hard to come by. I'm two+ years into my Persian study and the intermediate slog is real. Would love to discuss and share resources (LingQ and others) with you sometime! PS: I would do anything for a Persian graded reader!! I've not found them to date... and would be happy to support their production!
Have you tried Sahra's History of Iran a LingQ?
@@Thelinguist I recently stopped my LingQ subscription (competing priorities and heavily focusing on my speaking atm) and hadn't used Sahra's History content, but after watching this video I think it is time to come back!
Steve there are some historical tv series in standard Arabic like a serie about caliph Harun Ar-Rashid. And you can find it in youtube with English subtitles.
Story reading is key because it is additional motivation beyond the mere studying🎉 I wouldn't trust the "explanation" of national history, though,😂 for understanding history I trust (Western) academia and the great thinkers and writers of the language I study no better explanation of Russia than Dostojevsky
and I like grammar as such as a framework of rules native speakers are mostly unaware of
I'm on Ollie's side with the internet phantasy of getting fluent quickly and I would add the element of boasting especially with the numbers of languages one speaks😢
I'm currently using Olly's conversations in chinese! Steve, how's it going?
Thank you Charles!
Oui
Steve I’m a little confused, you said you do the questions set in the 26 stories set by your Iranian friend yet I’m sure in the past you’ve said you don’t do the questions in the LingQ mini stories ? Please clarify or have I misread you ? Great video I’m trying to learn Spanish from scratch and have just got Ollys short storybook. 😎🏴
The circling questions in our mini-stories, and in the history of Iran, are simply there to listen to as additional exposure. These are not comprehension questions in the sense that I try to rack my brain to remember what was in the story.
Can you talk about learning English as a second language?
Steve's #metoo confession @ 29:12
BRUH
AHAHAH nice
Hey Steve, how did you go about learning Spanish? Can you give us more advice and tips about us who are learning Spanish? I'm Indonesian, hopefully someday we can chat in English - Spanish - Indonesian! 😆🙏🏻
LingQ
@@Thelinguist I am a Iingq member Steve 😆 but very well, thank you!
Depending on your level, I would use anything from the mini-stories to whatever you find in our library to importing things from RUclips or Netflix. Lots of listening and reading. Consult the Context Reverso dictionary to see the verb conjugations from time to time. If and when I start on Indonesian I will start with the mini-stories and then proceed from there. Cheers.
Bueno! Thank you Steve, looking forward for your next video 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Steve tidak mengerti atau bicara bahasa Indonesia. Saya orang Filipina dan suka Indonesia! Apa kabar?
Great. I love learning languages by reading. I heard you want to try Urdu. It is one of the languages that I want to learn too. Let me know how I can help adding it to Lingq
We have people working on translating the mini stories and recording them in Urdu.
@@Thelinguist by the way I just remembered a series in standard arabic called wasm ( i think this is the agreed translation of hashtag) it is scripted to English I will leave a link here let me know if you like it I will look for others like it:
