  • In an incredible conservation effort, SANParks has successfully saved and translocated elephants to the stunning Marakele National Park. This journey of rescue and rehabilitation stems from a tragic beginning in May 1999, when Carte Blanche exposed the mistreatment of 30 young elephants captured at Botswana’s Tuli game reserve. These elephants were subjected to horrific abuse at African Game Services in the North West province, where they were exploited for profit, with some even sold and exported to zoos in Germany and Switzerland.
In 2003, justice was served as Riccardo Ghiazza and Wayne Stockigt were found guilty of offences under the Animals Protection Act in the Pretoria Regional Court, marking a significant victory for the NSPCA.
Today, Marakele National Park, a magnificent Big Five game reserve in Limpopo Province, South Africa, stands as a sanctuary for these rescued elephants. Marakele is renowned not only for its elephants but also for its extraordinary biodiversity. Visitors can witness the world's largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Vulture and explore the park’s varied landscapes, from the dry western areas to the wetter eastern regions.
The park offers a unique safari experience, especially appealing to birders and nature enthusiasts. Highlights include the scenic drive to Kranskop, which traverses multiple vegetation zones, and the chance to see rare antelope species like Tsessebe, Mountain reedbuck, and Eland.
While Marakele is home to the Big Five, it's the park's serene beauty, authentic bush experience, and the story of its elephants that make it truly special. Many visitors are drawn to Marakele in the hopes of encountering its large rhinoceros population and experiencing the park’s tranquil yet thrilling atmosphere.
