I wonder if he recorded these before posting. Also, he might already know that it might be PLL, but doing this method to show how others might TS it.

If I were a betting man it would be on a bad solder joint. When something works or stops working after warm up. This radio likely has lead/tin solder. These solder joints are prone to the metals migrating apart after about 11 years. All they need is to be remelted and a dab of new solder added. The time to do this is when you change the capacitors. I speak from experience on an IC-725

The lead-free solder of later years are much worse regarding stability over time, and difficulty to repair. Just ask repair techs

Maybe having the top cover on helps with shielding the circuitry?

I have the same transceiver but there are some problems. There is a crackling sound when receiving.

I built my own LED lighting for my radio bench using battery power with a linear supply for a float charger. Chinese LED lighting is just a noise generator, with zero attention paid to radiated noise.

It sounds like an electrolytic capacitor might have reformed, or a cracked component with moisture in it is drying out after it gets turned on and then starts working again.

I replaced all the caps so that's not it. yes it still might be some moisture somewhere.

If you get an opportunity to purchase a radio test set do it. Look up a Motorola 2000 or something like it. It has a generator with modulation and a variable step attenuator. You can test the sensitivity with it. It can do much more. It can also receive and test the output power for short tests.
