23:15 Omg...Ive been playing this game for over 20 years and just realized....spolier . . . . . . . When the thing explodes and Doc references "Inferior parts", is he referenceing the Zeboim era (aka modern era) from 1000 years ago? Thus giving away a big plot point innocuously, like the music box, it's so cool... 28:08
0:34 that’s pretty much what I heard elsewhere. I freaking LOVE this game and I’m so glad I still have the original disc from when I bought it back in 1998!
8:39 you’re closer than you know by calling him Satan, lol. His name was supposed to invoke Shaitan (which is the name of the adversary of the Old Testament). Apparently, his name was going to be romanized as Shitan to make the pronunciation more obvious… but the translator told Square that it would be a bad idea to have someone with the word shit In their name.
hey there!! i'm so excited for youuu! enjoy the wild ride and if you don't mind, let me know when you have beaten the game and tell me what you think about it 😁
Remember always seeing this game on the second hand table at my local game shop when I was a kid and was always tempted to buy it. Never did for whatever reason. Glad to finally get to check it out! Gorgeous cutscene visuals for a ps1 game.
Don't remember seeing any of them lol. But the cover of this game is super etched into my memory for some reason. I remember nearly buying it multiple times but always ended up choosing other games instead for whatever reason. So this is actually the first game in the Xeno series? How connected is the plot tot he xenoblade games?
@@anaximander9215 It's not *directly* connected to it, but it seems to be set in the same universe, impliedly, as of Future Redeemed. It won't really give you any extra context for the Xenoblade games, and the Xenoblade games don't really require knowledge of Xenosaga or Xenogears. You can mostly think of the Xenoblades as spiritual reimaginings of the Xenosaga/Gears games, as I understand it.
“There’s a lot of similar references to Xenoblade…” I have jokingly called Xenoblade 3 a stealth remake of Xenogears, but it’s not completely wrong either. Hope you have fun with the game
@@skyeifer Let's put it this way. I played this game upon its original PS1 release when I was 16 and I haven't been back to church since. Also, don't believe everything you hear about the game being compromised by its budget/deadlines/etc.. In 1998, there were very real concerns about the game getting banned in the US for the themes in its story, and alot of those budget stories came out years later to whitewash them. Takahashi very much deserves the success he has now with XC and the Zelda games, as it took him 20+ years to get mainstream and stay there, but most of what people love about XC/BOTW/TOTK began with how bold he and his wife were in this game. Lots of JRPGs will have you "kill a god", but Xenogears is the only one willing to kill yours before you beat it.
It was not banned, per se, but it very much almost did not come out in the West and a lot had to be changed to ensure it would be able to be released more broadly. For instance, in Japan, a certain organization was blatantly referred to as ‘the Church’, but had its name changed to something else in the West to reduce controversy that would result when a certain (how to put in lightly) EXTREMELY dark plot line was revealed much later in the game. Surprisingly they still explicitly reference and spell out the controversial actions said institution carried out and it is no secret that said institution is in fact a reference to a certain real world church who is accused of having carried out similar f’ed up sh** (you’d have to be blind not to infer who they are referring to), but all the same, a different name was used in the Western release to make the reference a tad less… direct. Also, a certain entity encountered much later in the game had its name changed to Deus (this time in both the Japanese and Western release). The original draft called for what eventually was named Deus to instead be named Yabeh (Yahweh). Because Richard Honeywood, the main (and eventually only) translator of the game (after the rest abandoned the project due to being afraid of being associated with it due the myriad of religious controversies), contacted Takahashi, emphatically warning him that calling that character Yahweh (the Abrahamic god of both Jews, Christians and Muslims), could likely result in potential disaster were the game ever to have worldwide release. It was considered best to eliminate the name entirely as even keeping it in theJapanese release could open up the game (and Squaresoft by extension) to extreme religious backlash. These are two examples of the controversies that surrounded this game at the time, but not an exhaustive list. Suffice it to say, that we got this game at all is nothing short of a miracle.
NO WAAAAAAAY!!! Oh my gosh im going bonkers, I cant believe you're finally playing this masterpiece, its such a good game! I cant wait go on this amazing journey with you, and experience it all over again!~
the gameplay can be a bit rough but the story is so amazing! i have honestly never seen such a phenomenal storytelling in a game! (note that i've not played a lot of games 😂)
A lot of names here are German, Hebrew, etc. Since its a game with a wide diversity of languages and religious references. Weltall starts with a V when pronounced. You were pretty close with Jugend I guess. It is a German name.
Yes. The J- in Jugend would be pronounced with a Y sound in English and, without going into spoilers, is very likely a reference to Hitlerjugend (the Hitler Youth) considering the blatantly fascistic rhetoric thrown around by most of its members (and by extension Solaris in general) as well as the tendency for it to be a pipeline for the (relatively) young to become Gebler officers.

2:50 the writing says “you shall be as gods.”
Fun Easter egg: in Xenosaga, the activation code for KOS-MOS is “ye shall be as gods.”
5:05 and you won’t understand until like, 40-50 hours into the plot!
