On the one hand, I like the audience. Their cheering and ooh-ng and aaah-ing is a sign of appreciation, after all - and no doubt they have a right to be stunned by this performance! On the other hand, I find myself thinking: this is not the circus, people, this is art. Don't just cheer for every amazing feat, let the succession of movements impress itself on you. Also, for the artist it is nice to be appreciated, but there's also the point where it becomes distracting.
+uclmu2008 -- While watching this on my monitor, it is hard to refrain from jumping up, applauding and shouting "Bravo!" Vasiliev and Osipova are perfectionists on their art. I am glad that I can watch this again and again.
A match we wait for in the ballet world. They are wonderful of all the best of artistry come together. This is a sensational pairing and a rare gift to have two dancers of extraordinary performance be of one in pas de deux. They are grateful for their unique pairing, I am sure--if you are able to ever be in house when they are performing...how fortunate you are to have a seat! Osipova and Vasiliev have brought some of the past hoped for return of great performance--thank you--just wonderful to see great ballet performance and a great fine art to enjoy!
Какие невероятные артисты!!! Браво, брависсимо!!! Иван Васильев - фантастический танцовщик, такого, как он больше нет ни среди танцовщиков 20 столетия, ни среди современных.
I am amazed by the reactions of (presumably) non-dancers below this video. Knowing what fiendishly difficult choreography Osipova and Vasiliev are dancing, and achieving it with such tremendous elan, aplomb and showmanship, to use a word like 'circus' is pathetic and obviously used without any terpsichorean knowledge. It is a privilege to watch these two extraordinary dancers, and like Stephanie Cruvant said, one is 'grateful and blessed' to be around today to watch them.
As an ex ballerina with a major company, I couldn’t agree with you more. But hopefully, they are referring to the circus-like atmosphere created but what sound like a crass crowd that likens the ballet to some Las Vegas act as if these are spectacles like circus acts. The point of the choreography is not to impress people as if they just performed stunts. The shouting and hollering and whooping is horrible etiquette. It’s not snobbishness on my part. It’s just so out of place and uncalled for. It obliterates they music. A hallmark of great dancing is musicality and how can you enjoy a dancers musicality with these kind of crazy interruptions. Whooping it up is fine in the right place but it doesn’t belong in the middle of one of the great classical ballets performed by two outstanding professionals.
Unbelievable! The grace, skill, balances, control, jumps, spins and original choreography exceed possibility. This performance demonstrates an absolute mastery of movement, music and dance.
Ivan, absolute perfection in form, grace, control.. unbelievable strength and characterization! A performance of a lifetime & Natalia, unique & beautiful touches to the choreography, light, confident grace; also a performance of a lifetime! These two truly are the strongest, most creative and exciting dancers if this generation .. & likely if any other generation. I am grateful & blessed to be alive to witness this art!
Russian audiences are surely the most knowledgeable in the world, and if I were lucky enough ever to see the Mariinski or Bolshoi companies on their home theatres, I would not only enjoy their celebrations, but it would be an honour to join in.. PS Adore this clip! Vasiliev has never been better.
Spine-tingling stuff! I liked the slower tempo in Vasiliev's first variation which gave him time to 'draw pictures in the air'. Very bravura dancing, of course, but they are both nevertheless beautifully in character.
Impadronimento imperativo del proscenio attuato con balzi e torsioni volanti altissime e di pura eccezionalità come del resto i tourbillon di giravolte da capogiro della ballerina. He used to be one of my favorite male dancers ever. Now with his obsession to reach athletic acrobacies he's that, an acrobat. And he's graceful and does all sorts of extravagant jumps and pirouttes and one feels that one has to cheer him, but this is not what ballet is about. At least we have her as a wonderful ballet dancer. One of my favorites.
I see your point. But can you blame him for that? Isn't he supposed to do what the director asks for? And aren't directors who set the trend, depending on the audiences' taste of the time?
Great audience. I love the way Americans clap and show their appreciation when something is truly masterful. I just wish they'd boo more when something is really crap.
i used to get mad a Svetlana Zarkharova because she just was all limbs to me, but i heard her interviewed, and she was so in love with ballet and everything about it, and i fell in love along with her. I learned to appreciate, not necessarily obsess over, but appreciate all artists in their own rights, regardless of whether or not they are in tune with my personal taste.
Karin Allred, yes you can, showing more respect while they are performing. Can’t they control themselves and wait to the end to express themselves? Using the same criteria, at the opera every time a soprano, tenor, baritone, etc., reaches the X note, they would always be interrupting them. But no, this cannot and does not happen. This is not figure skating, this is not a sport, this is art.
@@CAROCHAPT exactly. More and more quality art shows are performed in front of audiences that take the quality of the occasion for granted. Maybe it's time to enforce an audience assessment prior that directors of artistic crew decide to carry on with a play. Certain things are not for every one, no wander the crowd cheers as they're attending a street circus, with all due respect for the circus as a respectful genre of its own.
Boring to you, but there IS a proper way to watch ballet and the arts. It's called silence till the end, and THEN you show your appreciation. Noise can distract the dancers and they can get hurt.
you are right, I think, since he's small he might need to be thiner to be able to look more taller. They are amazing strong and the jumps are really high!!!
iamhere233 The music is from a live orchestra. They do need to be able to hear the music, it isn't gymnastics or the Circus. It's like someone shouting and applauding in the middle of an Opera Singer's performance. They (the audience members) are expected to respect the art form and hold their applause (perhaps a quick "brava" after a very impressive series is acceptable) in order to appreciate not just the technical skill but the musicality of the dancers. It ruins the entire picture when so much noise is made.
You hear here what the microphone gives you, and in this instance the camera and the microphone were in the middle of this particular group of people in the audience. You did not hear here what the artists and the rest of audience was hearing. The video is deceptive from that point of view.
@@sorellman It´s distracting for the performers and very annoying for the audience, from the Orchestra to the Fifth Ring. This performance took place at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, but the same happens with any outstanding dancer that comes to this theater. Sometimes it´s disgusting, some Americans behave like if they were in a Soccer field! The audience is much better at the David Koch Theater, in the same Plaza, home of the New York City Ballet and dedicated exclusively to dance.
Diricia & Puma Cat , so respect the art, not only the ballet but the orchestra as well and by the way, ask maestro Zubin Metha what he thinks and feels about that hysterical clapping, remembering that this only happens in a few and certain countries.
What a wonderful combination they made. Perfection 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
