It's often more stress to deal with things on the spot than to follow a schedule. Schedules are for stress reduction and building habits, not something that chains you down or reduces creativity. It provides a framework in which you can prosper. It took me so long to realize this.
I got one at the start, and like my comment said, I actually thought that it was the actual video, until I was nearly done watching it and noticed the "Skip Ads" button at the bottom right.
As someone who loves video games to death, I think having to manage time between game development and responsibilities like family is no easy feat. Massive respect to you and all who go into development.
These videos are all very very helpful! As an indie game dev working on a computer science degree, I appreciate all of this quite a bit! If possible, at some point would you be willing to make a video on game pricing, hyping games, and generally more on releasing games and how to do it well?
Another tip: For managing your post schedule, many social media platforms have the ability to schedule your posts. So during that marketing week, you can prime all of those posts in the scheduler and set when they should go live, then you don't have to even set reminders! Some platforms don't have this capability, but there are third party content schedulers like ContentCal and Falcon that are really easy to use for a small monthly fee.
This guy talks so much sense. Very useful information. As a dev that has a full-time job (not game dev) and works on games in my spare time - hoping to make that switch in a year or two - you can't argue with what is said. Plan, plan, plan. SO important. And when you're part-time, you've got to sacrifice if you want to get stuff done in a timely manner (IMO). Just remember to take an evening off every now and then. :D
Thank you so much for answering my question, Thomas! Really appreciate the great advice you gave. Spending my game dev time on a course on Unity Learn at the moment, but I'll be on to making my first game in no time! Thanks for everything, Michael
Great video Thomas! It’s amazing how much mental space something can take up until we acknowledge it by writing it down somewhere (like a calendar.) The incredible thing about what you’re suggesting regarding offloading processes is that is scales indefinitely. A calendar is quick and free way to offload mental processing power and a virtual assistant is that a scale. Again, amazing work! You rock!
this is great advice! over time i naturally developed the same techniques for managing my social network accounts. I have a Notion page with all my hashtags organized by type of post, call to action, also a list of all my social links, which i drop into my youtube channel, and I always have handy in case i need my links. I also have a draft early preview game trailer, super early preview, but I have it on private on my youtube account, but i can share the link to anyone interested in seeing it, which has come in handy a couple of times.
LOL, I feel SOOOOO stupid (okay only a little stupid), but before I happen to get to even watching the actual video, I got one of Thomas's Ads, and was enjoying watch through it, even paused it to check out the link, continued watching and paused again to go grab a drink, and once I returned to continue watching again, I finally noticed that I was 2:12 into the 2:44 long ad. Well, at this point I might as well just finish watching the ad and then get into the actual video... *Edit:* Finally into watching the actual video, (3:20 into the video at the time of this edit), and I am really finding the information so far in the video very helpful. It also made me happy on the inside, because hearing the information about "off-loading" the tasks and skills that you are not as skilled at to others, to help you focus on the skills and tasks that you are skilled at, was exactly what I was thinking about this past Saturday talking with some long-time friends about my current game project and mentioning to them both that when I get to a point that I want to begin working on sound design / background music / sound effects / etc., I was immediately thinking about asking them to do that process for me, and I would gladly pay them some amount for the work.
I really want to start doing game dev stuff but at the same time...school. And literally halfway through an exam. really difficult to balance stuff like this out ;-;
Same here! I am brand new to the community(3 months in) and I have exams in a couple weeks, one thing I can give advice is a planner it helps me out or simply meditate in the morning for 5-10 minutes it will clear your mind and help you focus. Idk if it works for you but that’s how I plan
I started learning Blender when I was 13. At the time I worked 3-6 days a week doing construction with my dad and had to do school after I got home (I was homeschooled) and somehow I still managed to learn Blender. Sure I was staying up till 2am every night, but I was determined to learn how to make stuff in the program.
I just want to say that you not only helped me with starting out with game development. But also a good mentality for game dev, college, and life thanks for always bringing us the best content.
The hardest thing of game development is actually the time I don't like to set timers that stress me but I like to put to do list . I would say that could eventually lead to lazyness but if you have true passionate you don't have to worry about it , but I think that why I still didn't publish any game yet but remember it's game *development* you have to iterate on your project . a game jam isn't part of that because it's challenge
Top 3 Traits to focus on: 1) Programming, ... not sure about the other 2.... ultimately hope to off load: Marketing and Social Media Presence for future games (I'll do the first one, after buying your course, and being motivated by your videos,.... I've come to realize it's easier to market myself for my first video game than I thought, especially since I'm taking it very slow). 2) Not sure if this is a trait, but I get excited seeing what art is available for game creation, and what games other people have made....for example, I just spent less than $10 and bought 15 games on steam, I plan on playing each one to see what the dev has done, plus I watch youtube gameplay vids like you suggest.) Long story short, I'm super glad that I signed up for your course. Thanks Thomas! Still not sure about trait #3. lol

I have a about 2 years experience in digital marketing. I can say that if you know what your goals are and how to use most social media tools properly, you can knock out an entire week or more marketing in a day.
How about when it comes to balancing learning different game development aspects like all the intricacies of the artwork and animations, learning the engine, programming, sound design and music etc? I find that balance a bit hard at the moment, let alone balancing life as well
The schedule to post is simple. But how do we schedule the community interaction time? There was a time I had to spend almost 6 hours a day only with interactions (no help). It destroyed me. We just post and don't interact with the community? (answering comments can take hours).
