I read that the first half of the OP is not for fans, it was a "thank you" from Megumi Ishitani (director of the OP) and the One Piece team, honoring all the animators that share their talent to make Wano what it was. those scenes in the flashback were selected as example of their work and talent.
Not gonna lie, the entire Manga I didn't ever really personally hate Orochi. I got why the characters hated him, and I wanted him to be defeated, but it wasn't until episode 1075 that I really truly felt it. The immense weight of his evil on the people of Wano. I really enjoyed it.
1075 was such a beautiful episode, sad that so many people were too focused on how they thought orochi was annoying to notice the amazing directing and imagery. When denjiro decapitated him and then seeing the prayers and wishes of the people rising around them coupled with the breathtaking music made me get teary eyed
One cool thing I noticed about the Opening is that there is a circle in every frame similar in size to the "O" at the beginning. Also awesome reaction!
I was thinking the same thing with Josh when first watching the first half of the opening, but then I think I started to understand that this opening is about Momo -- Everything is from his POV. He was the one writing that journal so the first part everything in that circle is about his past, then his shadow looming over the journal when showing the memories after he was sent through time. And then after Luffy broke through that past O you can see his perspective of being big dragon (with his feet in front of him and then looking at Yamato on his back) and the O of the present time are all filled with happiness memories (with all the images with transition O -- the table, food, bridge, Tama's dango, etc...) and then ended with the O of his pupil zooming out and we see him from the back. This makes me like the first part, since it added more story to the opening instead of randomly showing cool sequences without any meaning. Also a clever way to get rid of the credit first, so the nice sequences on the second half are creditless and we can see all full scenes without any text or copy on top of it.
I love that the OP and ED put so much emphasis on Momo- the OP being explicitly from his perspective. The divisive recap O scene- It's simple colours, a simple stroke, this is very Zen, very minimalist, very traditionally Japanese. Then, JoyBoy breaks out of that mold, going from the past to the future. I think the poignancy of the metaphor, the heart of this being Momo's journal, and the amount of PAYOFF after the break in the circle makes absolutely justifies this choice. Like, the way that the second MP100 OP communicates by comparing the development of animation with the progression of character, or the third MP100 OP uses collage to communicate finality and unity of all the series' disparate (visual) elements into a "1 and only 1" person.
The new opening seems like a celebration to Wano but also a farewell. Because Wano arc in the anime started in 2019, so it's been going on for so long now. The longest arc is about to wrap up Wano arc is ending soon in the anime, and i can't just wait for the next arc to be animated.

Oda's biggest crime in this arc was keeping Orochi and Kinemon alive for this long.
