Good job ! The CLP Maine course in Maine for pros ( I was the only civilian in my class mandated for pro insurance and bonding ) took a couple of the loggers' oil and sap soaked chaps. Put them across a log and sawed right through them; the stiff Kevlar threads did not stop the saw. All the "students" bought new chaps to the next session. Warning: well used, oil and sap soaked chaps will not stop a saw. We all learned.

Thanks for talking safety! Safety for me always starts and finishes above the shoulders. ER costs for a typical chainsaw injury easily exceed $100K for the uninsured and will always exceed the deductible for those who have insurance. Injuries are accidents and there is no smart way to injure yourself or another, stupid is the main underlying/contributing factor for workplace injuries. PPE mitigates or advoids work place bodily injuries. Ray

Chaps saved my lefty leg / life when i was 21yo working for the USFS in 1996 in CO. I was running an old 42 Stihl with a 40” bar. These chaps were made of kevlar. I was deep in a very remote part of the National Forest working a TSI job. Also cutting low. Hit something on the tip (kick back zone) it came back and hit my left shin so hard it gave me a huge gooses egg. However it did not cut my leg off. We were so remote i doubt i would have survived.

In motorcycle safety training, they have a couple sayings that are memorable. The first is to counter the idea that, 'I'm just taking a quick ride, don't need to bother with all the equipment.' "Don't dress for the ride. Dress for the crash". The second is an acronym, AT GATT All The Gear, All The Time. Helmet, gloves, ear protection, eye protection, chaps, steel-toed boots. For years when I first started cutting wood I never had chaps. When I was 14 I accidentally cut my instep on my left foot really bad right behind the steel toe. I learned a lot about body position after that accident. Since then for over 40 years I have never once hit my chaps or boots. I do believe in wearing chaps all the time though. If for nothing else they help save wear and tear on your pants.
Stihl does make wrap chaps. I've had a pair for around 20 years now. I like them better than the Husky chaps because they have better crotch protection so you don't get hit in the manhood by flying debris. LOL!!

I have scans on my left thigh right now because of a quick job to clear brush along a driveway, I didn’t put on my chaps because it was only going to take a couple of minutes. I was lucky and just cut my jeans and barely touched my leg. I wish not push my luck ever again by not wearing them. Besides they keep your pants cleaner and help when going through briars.

Alright, I have had 2 pairs of chaps for probably 25 years, they are still in excellent condition, I probably only use a saw 5 or 6 times a year to remove storm damaged trees on my place, but I have to admit I often don't wear them these days. Familiarity breeds contempt, I'll take your video as a reminder to not to be so slack!

Brush and saplings are dangerous. My great uncle had a scar on one arm over a foot long from brush cutting with a chain saw. Your chart there lists a slightly higher number for arm injuries. I would expect to see a jacket at least as well made as your new pants. Then if the whole outfit complied with visibility rules as well, that would be nice. Thanks for the video. Take care. P.S. I think your emergency room estimates are really low.

Parents bought a plot of land in a unincorporated area outside a city, wasn’t a forest just a overgrown area, so my parents had us kids helping clean up the land ( Dad had the chainsaw { like a 18 inch Poulan Pro} I had the axe and brother had a bow saw for limbs and somehow youngest brother got ahold of the hatchet!) well while whacking a sapling with said hatchet, he bounces it off the sapling and into his calf, at which point the neighbors 6 miles away hear his blood curdling scream!, I being the closest rush over and tie my pristine Foghat Live Raglan t-shirt around his calf and we shove him into the back of the Vista Cruiser for the ride to the emergency room. Now granted this was late 70’s-early ‘82 and safety laws along with the child labor laws weren’t really enforced and short of the scar he ended up with my youngest brother now claims it’s a dirt bike scar ( chicks dig motocross scars ) and the parents ended up sellin off the plot for a pontoon boat and trailer. But I do follow the safety procedures and own a pair of “clown pants” and a helmet w/screen, Irene claims I look sexy, but then again she married me so that tells ya all ya need to know!.

I've got a bit better than 30 years of cutting and I haven't been bitten yet but you've nearly got me sold. I've had a few chainsaw injuries but they have been sharpening with a file and taking a slice out of the finger and I've also had a couple of muffler burns. I did touch my steel caps once and have had a chain spit out and grab my pants slightly.
What is a bit scary is that electric chainsaws are more capable of powering through chaps. I have 2 corded electric ones and they are meant to be the worst.
