After he got 100, it was just wow. Little bit of Derek Randall , bit of Botham..... and I will say some gentle strokes of Bradman and Gower. Amazing innings. Got to be one of the best in an England shirt, surely? Met him at Edgbaston a few years back, didn't hassle him, just said hello ( he was with his missus) but a true great of cricket and English sport.

Super innings, full of gorgeous shots. Broad had a great career and we will miss him now that he has retired.
I remember when Broad was competent with the bat around this period, Boycott would often compare his drives (particularly backfoot) and clips off his hip to Sobers.

Not only an amazing innings and partnership, but it completely destroyed the morale of the Pakistan team, to go from potentially bowling England out for sub 150 when batting first, to conceding 450. They then got bowled out for just 74 in their innings (Broad of course having an impact with 2-10). The other 18 batsmen who played in the first innings for both teams got a combined 125 runs, Broad and Trott got 353! Even with Pakistan's second innings added in, so the other 28 wickets combined across 3 innings got a total of 272, so it was not like it was a road, the ball was moving and spinning for most of the game.
Let's not forget Jonathan Trott here. Presence of an established batsmen helps in taking important decisions during batting. 2 tailenders batting and then they could have bundled out for 120 from 102-7

It's a shame that whack through the grill he got meant his batting really trailed off from such early promise. Really thought after this innings he would kick on and become a true all rounder averaging in the 30s with the bat but never really managed to hit similar heights. What a partnership though, to go from 102-7, to over 400 is crazy.

Getting hit in the face by the Varun Aaron bouncer against India robbed England of Stuart Broad becoming an influential and genuine all-rounder in Test cricket.
I remember this knock. There were at least 3 or 4 drop catches. And in the same series, spot fixing saga was unveiled too.
Without fixing there would have been 10-12 dropped catches 😂

He would have been one of the greatest all rounders if it wasn’t for the unfortunate bouncer incident!
England have had two world-class fast bowling allrounders in my lifetime (I'm not quite old enough to have seen Trevor Bailey) and they have been Mr. Botham and Mr. Flintoff. There have been other very competent and very valuable "bits and pieces" players, but none that fit the true allrounder definition; a player who would get into the team based around EITHER discipline alone, if the other was absent. Stokes ? Not quite. But I shall go to my grave believing that England missed out on a third world-class, fast-bowling allrounder through over eagerness. Batting develops more slowly than bowling in a young allrounder, and I shall always argue that if England had left Stuart Broad in County Cricket for two more seasons for his batting fully to mature, he would have been the real deal. Yes, we indeed saw glimpses in his younger days - and one utterly glorious century - but he didn't have the mind-shape to handle being hit in the face and bounce back - and became a slogger. Too many times, with England in difficulty with seven or eight wickets down for not very many, have I shouted at my television set "bat PROPERLY, Stuart, for goodness' sake - we all know you can". Opportunity missed. So sad.

There was a time when Stuart Broad could have been classified as a genuine test match all rounder. His batting fell away badly as his career went on. He was never the same after being hit on the head by an Aaron bouncer in 2014.
