In this second video we finally glue a slot car spur gear to an axle and work out how to position it correctly based on wheel hub size and chassis width. You might want to lighten and drill your Cahoza, S&K, Slotit, NSR or Scalextric slot car gears first.

I prefer to key the shaft with a hollow set screw. As light. stronger and can be removed as needed.
A set screw is the standard method of holding the gears onto the axle, but when you start getting into very high RPM ranges, the slight imbalance and the small bend it makes on the shaft, cause vibrations. Gluing on the gear seems to eliminate this. You can always remove it when it is worn out by heating up the axle and sliding the gear off.

What you could do is start of with a longer axle with pointed ends to balance it after glueing on the gear.

@@CleaveTech Got another idea. Maybe shave the gear width by about a third to save weight.
@@RollingThunder808 , I do narrow F1 crown gears, but I find you need the full width for straight gears due to the torque of the motors. If you only use low powered FK type motors such as the Falcon 7 then you might be able to narrow the gears.
James great tutorial, but I have noticed that the axles are of different lengths, That will change things a tad.
Thanks for watching. Yes, the axle is shorter on the final product because shortening the axle to the correct and necessary length was all part of completing the process.
I dont have that kind of lathe where you put tool in a angle, but i do have a hudy lathe, any way one can use hudy lathe to remove that excess alum?
Hi Koford, yes I have seen people use a Hudy Com lathe to remove the boss material. You just put the gear and axle between the V blocks and maybe use an old hub as a pulley on the axle for the belt to run on. You can then use an old com truing tool to remove the excess material on the boss 👍🏻
You can also use two rotary tools. Use a grinding disc in one tool and put the axle and gear in the other. You can then grind by hand. It is fairly easy to achieve a good result this way, just be careful 🤕
I would like to ask you two (2) questions. one: how it peels off. ? if it takes off, or after running several races, everything is thrown away. ? Thank you.
Hi Daniel, good question. To remove the gear after it has been used, you can apply lots of heat with a soldering iron or a blow torch and then just tap the gear off the axle.
what I would like (if they can do it.) a video (or several.) explaining how to prepare an open slor car, that is g12, or any other open car. I hope you have understood me. thanks in advance.
Hi Daniel. Open cars are actually some of the easiest to prepare as the chassis work very well without any changes and it is just a case of assembling the correct parts. I will add that idea to my list of videos. Thank you.
@@CleaveTech I race G7 and GT12 slot cars and soldering together the chassis is very simple, There are no front tires on either slot car so you do not need special tools other than a soldering iron and a ceramic soldering block.
What model is the lathe ?
