Language is very important when trying to reach a point of conversation where the light bulb turns on for people as oppose to their defense being turned on because now the word/term speaks to their character, so they no longer hear you or are listening to understand. They are listening to defend themselves. The proper term we should be using in these conversations is “Prejudice”, not racist. Racism, by definition, is an ideology that no other race can be superior to yours and they need to exist beneath yours. However, prejudice is more what cultural bias you may have over other persons that is deep rooted in your stereotypes, negative experiences, upbringing, lack of cultural education or exposure, or simply what has been force-fed to you from TV, media and entertainment. Prejudices can exist amongst same race, nationality, same genders, etc. By definition, you cannot be both a racist and a minority. But you absolutely can be both prejudice and an asshole in all walks of life. Distinguishing the difference between the two terms will open completely different dialogue in this stagnant conversation that hasn’t gone anywhere as long as I have been alive.
