Usually, fillers are bullshit. But this one was just pure genius, it shows perfectly the struggle that Vegeta was going through at that point. His biggest enemy and even that "stranger" were what he wanted the most: Super Saiyans. On a technical note, the drawing and animation are stunning, and I love the golden eyes when they power up. It's a shame that never happened again, it looks awesome.

Bro the pure emotion from what he's feeling must have been insane. Trunks AND Goku surpassed him and became Super Saiyans and he's PISSED he can't reach that same level and it feels out of his reach. Just like they are.
This nightmare does a great job foreshadowing the following story arc after this because Vegeta's fear of being left behind is what led to him becoming a Super Saiyan in 3 years. Then watching Cell destroy Trunks results in a 7 year gap where he desperately wishes to reach the next level of saiyan ascension but at the cost of his own sanity and then later his life.
This was so awesome. It was the second time we saw Vegeta showing love for his father, which is huge coming from him at that time. Atleast Vegeta still remembers and respects his father, can't say the same for Goku.
@LelouchCommandsYou the mystic gohan was just a way for him to gain the ss powers without wasting time and energy by transforming, think back to the cell saga inside the hyperbolic time chamber, that's what goku told gohan and why they tried to stay ss for as long as possible with wasting energy, when old kai unleashed his potential and he powered up his eyes onlr really changed green for a moment just to signify the power up.. ^^
@indianaramchuck why is goku the only? isnt vegeta one? and even though gohan didnt train as much he was the most powerful since he had the most potential. and when elder kai released it all he became so powerful he didnt even really need to actually go super saiyan. i myself think of it like this: Gohan raised his power as high as he could. he simply went through the proccess of becoming ss but never finished the actual transformation.
Even if your theory of the movies being non-canon, it's quite moot against the Bardock movie as clips also appear on the anime. Vegeta is older than Goku, by 6 years.
@Brandon5l9 I disagree the characterization in the Japanese version is much more thought provoking then in the Funi dub which is more emotive. Although Funi dub does have its great moments the Japanese version is far superior.

+Joseph Kai isn't 100% filler free. They kept some of them, like Goku's dream about the androids (in a point where he never saw them).
