- In Gavin's perfect imaginary world where the desk motors are infinitely powerful, he is correct.
- On Earth in the real world where the rest of us live, the motor of the desk on the bottom of the stack would have to contend with lifting the weight of all of the desks on top of it (as well as a small additional downward force from a few desks pushing down to move up - see Newton's action-reaction law). The top desk would move. Some middle desks would move slowly. The motor of the bottom desk might burn out, catch fire, and create a towering inferno. Or maybe not. This sounds like a great experiment for them to try themselves.

For the desks.
If both desks move at 1 cm/sec and they both only move for one second, then the top of the first desk will be 1cm higher and the top of the second desk will be 2cm higher.
The first chair went 1cm in one second the second chair went 2cm/sec. (relative to the ground; relative to their surface each desk launches at 1cm/sec) So the higher desk will move at a faster rate, which will also take more force. PS in space the desks will move at half the rate relative to one point in space because the other half is moving backwards

In theory you just need two accelerating desks to test this. If the second desk is moving 2 MPH (or really just 2x the speed of the first desk) in relation to the floor, then you can extrapolate that Gavin is right.
The conversation has to be the first instance I've ever seen of crouton aggression.
Desk thing: speed is a vector relative to a specific point, so if we have 2 desks:
1) Relative to the floor, the top of the top desk will be moving at double speed upwards but
2) If we're only comparing the top of the desks to their own legs, each desk top will be moving at the same speed relative to its own legs.
You just have to remember that speed is measured in [distance relative to a point] per [time]. The desk on top will move twice the distance relative to the floor because the desk below is also raising it.
Maybe the sticking point is the time - it takes the same amount of TIME to finish travelling, but you will have TRAVELLED further (in a hypothetical where the desks don't break/slow down from weight). So it won't be faster TIME wise, but it will be faster SPEED wise.
