Great videos. I feel like I could build one without to much trouble. If I get stuck I could rewatch video before each step before I cut wood or screw something together. Like the old saying goes measure twice cut once. Best way to save money by not having to go get more wood because of an opps that could not be used somewhere else on the hutch or another future hutch.
As always, i dnt comment much ...but, pat on the back for this one too. Good job. I dnt know if u hv a restore around, its a big store where people that hv xtra building supplies donate materials and sell on the cheap. I recycle, mostly cause im cheap...lol. I use and reuse pallet material, wrks great. My nxt quail cage will hang from rafters on old barn w chains to hopefully keep out Undesirables per Hillary. Good job, Really enjoyed this one too, by the Way...
Thanks so much for the kind comments. We do have a restore here. I don't go there often because it is a little out of my way and you never know what they have but I do try to stop by when I am in the area.
Bunnies and quail? Holy...My yard's only big enough right now for the bunnies...I have a big dog crate...I hang it from the back wall of the house upside down. The wire's all good, the crap on the bottom'd let the bunnies out, it's good for the tarp though!
Have you ever considered dividing the excess hardware cloth on either side and fold it up on the outside of the frame? Reduces waste and allows you to staple on the side giving a bit better securement of the bottom of the floor. Or to be real secure sandwich the cloth between the frame and a strip of plywood or a strip of lath. The later is how I do mine.
That is a great idea. I have considered that before. Just haven't had a problem so far. If I do, I will definitely be sandwiching the wire to fix it. Thanks.
wondering if i could get your opinion on dust bathing material, i was considering using unscented non clumping cat litter. during the winter sand is hard to get for me and cheap cat litter is abundant. what are your thoughts on this idea instead of sand? thanks in advance.
I would think that would be ok. You might check the ingredients list and make sure it doesn't have anything in it that will harm the quail if they ingest it (take a little bit of googling) but I think it would work. You could also just use plain old dirt.
Why you did make the opposite from what you were saying @04:00 to position the 2X4 to the solid side. In the end you have bigger closed area then with Hardware Cloth. Changing the plan or by mistake?
I am honestly not sure. This was a long time ago and I don't exactly remember. The way I build things thought is to pretty much work it out as I go. So probably a change in plans.
Nice build but it seems like you made the solid side on the big door so your open side with mesh is the smaller area of the hutch which is opposite to what you originally wanted to do.
This is an old video and I don't remember exactly what I said about the feedbag. I think you might be referring to me putting an old feedback over one half of the hutch to close it in. The concern I had was it was blocking the light as well. I have since switched to clear plastic sheeting. I hope that clears it up.
Just a quick question do you think it's alright to use treated two-by-fours for my frame? I really don't want to deal with the rot. I salvaged some two-by-fours but they're 5 feet tall I wasn't sure if that was tall enough to build the such as like yours because I don't have a crate to stand them on
I have my quail In my feed store Ive noticed I have alot of dust how can I KEEP FROM DUSTING SO MUCH. or is that some thing Ihave to do since Im raising quail. Thanks Jack
I am not sure I understand the question. Is the dust coming from the food? If you keep it in sealed containers that should help but there is going to be some dust.
My quail keep pecking the hardware cloth. It seems its all they do for most of the day. One has actually broke a piece of its beek at the tip and it was bleeding pretty good for a while. But they just seem to pace back and forth pecking the wire. Any thoughts??
That sounds like boredom to me. I don't have that problem with my birds. Are you keeping them fed well? I keep feed in my feeders all the time but i notice they get restless if the feeders run out.
@@Slightlyrednecked There is always food in the feeders. I am going to put sandboxes in and see if that helps. I usually put them in but remove them after a couple of days when they have kicked out all the sand. I will leave them in longer and keep refilling to see if that helps. Thank you.
Are these predator proof? I have mountain lions, hawks, crows, raccoons, etc. in my area. Or are there any ideas for how you can make it more predator proof? Thanks!
That would be plenty big enough for them. I think mine are only about 5" tall and 5" wide. You can do it however you like though, the quail aren't going to complain.
well I am not saying that this is the only way to make your cages just the way i like to make them. They sit high enough for me to easily reach inside, plenty of ventilation, an option to get out of the weather, and the doors opening down makes it easier to open without birds falling out.
Slightly Rednecked I didn't mean any disrespect I was just wondering why you chose to build it the way you did, rather than assume I just wanted to ask you. I kinda figured it was ease of materials, good bird handling and maintenanc etc...
Oh, I didn't take it as disrespectful. I guess my answer kind of sounded like I did though didn't it? Sorry, maybe I shouldn't answer comments at 5:30 in the morning. :) What I meant by my answer is that it may not be the best way for everyone but it works well for me for the reasons I gave. I am sure that other people have other designs that have as many benefits for them. I hope that makes sense.
you don't have to use hardware cloth. They do need light but they probably would get enough with a covered top too. I just like to have a place to set the egg bucket and things like that.
Good question. I really don't know for sure what these were used for or what kind of company has them. You might try searchign craigslist for them. Honestly, it is just as easy to just use a couple of 2X4s to put legs on it though.
You can figure about 1 bird for every square foot of cage space. I believe that this hutch is 6 by 3 so that would be 18 square feet. Since it has a wire floor and the droppings fall through I can fit a few more birds in there and comfortably house about 25 birds.
No real reason but I do find now that having it open down works better to keep the birds in when I open it up. I tried a door that opened outward and it was very difficult to keep the birds in when I opened the door. They just come spilling out as soon as the door opens.
Wood can be salvaged here..pallets, scrap wood from crates, etc. He does have another video showing grow out cages made from just wire. I am just learning but it seems the brooding cages like/need a dark room ..I'm going to keep watching videos and learning but fascinated with health benefits of quail eggs. I do wonder about the distance between the top of the caged area and the roof. I know ventilation is I,portent but wondered if this distance could be less?
great job, Chris...

Thanks for the kind comments. It really isn't too difficult to build so I am sure you can do it and probably do a better job than I did.

I’m building my cage from your design. Thank you so much for the video! ❤️
Thanks so much for watching. I am glad you found the video helpful.
Nicely done! I copied your ideas using pallets, worked out great!
Thanks for the kind comments. Glad you found it helpful.

Well you do what you can. Sounds like you have it worked out though.

First comment, cool! I need to keep my quail in my detached garage just to help keep predators away.
That is unfortunate but at least you have the garage to keep them in.
Good build mate.
thank you so much. Glad you liked it.

they are actually fairly close to the same size. But yeah, i could have made the solid section a little smaller.
Inspired. Love it😎😎
Thanks so much for the kind comments.
Great vid. One point I'm unclear on is what you said aboot the feed bag over the light? Could I get a revisit on that?
This is an old video and I don't remember exactly what I said about the feedbag. I think you might be referring to me putting an old feedback over one half of the hutch to close it in. The concern I had was it was blocking the light as well. I have since switched to clear plastic sheeting. I hope that clears it up.
Yes Sir, certainly does. Thanks.
When it rains, doesn't the roof make a big racket and scare the birds?
No, it doesn't bother them at all.

That should be fine. If it were for rabbits I would avoid it because they chew on things. But it will work fine for quail.

I haven't had to deal with mountain lions but it has kept out raccoons, hawks, and foxes. You could always add some electric fence as well to help.
MOUNTAIN LIONS!?!...whew!
I'm glad I just have raccoons & possums!! Best to ya!
Is the 6" tall 8" wide doorway the correct size for jumbo coturnix quail? Or is that size doorway for standards?
That would be plenty big enough for them. I think mine are only about 5" tall and 5" wide. You can do it however you like though, the quail aren't going to complain.
@@Slightlyrednecked thank you, I wound up going 8" by 8" so they have plenty of room
What do you think the advantages are by making your cages this way?
well I am not saying that this is the only way to make your cages just the way i like to make them. They sit high enough for me to easily reach inside, plenty of ventilation, an option to get out of the weather, and the doors opening down makes it easier to open without birds falling out.

Hi Chris quick question. Do you use oil paint on the hutches or is water paint okay seeing that it has galvanized covering on top?
I am using a water based paint but I don't think it matters really. The roof is sheet metal salvaged from a torn down shed (freebee on craigslist).
Do you have to use hardware cloth on top of the hutch or can you cover it? Is it just preference or do they need sunlight?
you don't have to use hardware cloth. They do need light but they probably would get enough with a covered top too. I just like to have a place to set the egg bucket and things like that.
What type of stores do you think would carry those crates?
Good question. I really don't know for sure what these were used for or what kind of company has them. You might try searchign craigslist for them. Honestly, it is just as easy to just use a couple of 2X4s to put legs on it though.
Thanks!
How many quail would you say fit in the hutches??
You can figure about 1 bird for every square foot of cage space. I believe that this hutch is 6 by 3 so that would be 18 square feet. Since it has a wire floor and the droppings fall through I can fit a few more birds in there and comfortably house about 25 birds.
Please do the same video for rabbits!
If I build another rabbit shed I will for sure.
How much did u wast on supply?
not much really. I did buy a sheet of plywood and have almost half left over but not much other than that.
I may have missed this but is there a reason why you chose to open the hutch downwards and not have it swing out?
No real reason but I do find now that having it open down works better to keep the birds in when I open it up. I tried a door that opened outward and it was very difficult to keep the birds in when I opened the door. They just come spilling out as soon as the door opens.
That's interesting. Thanks!
No problem.
Jig saw
thats it. lol. :)
Wood seems to be really cheap in the US. Using 400 pounds of wood to accommodate two dozen quails is really strange for us in Asia.
Wood isn't that expensive here but I didn't use anywhere near 400 pounds.

lol. Yup. For the life of me I couldn't come up with that while the camera was on. :)
