The girls were obviously superb song writers. These original, stripped down versions of the songs are proof of this. That said, the fact is that the album was some of the best "synth pop" of the period and I heard A LOT of it. Looking back on this single album it is clear that their sound was hugely influential on lots of music that came after it. The album was really a whole new category that might be called electronic psychedelia. It was brilliant, completely fresh. There had never been anything quite like it and hasn't been since. Just had to say this because all the whining I hear about their choosing the electronic route. I wouldn't change a thing except them staying together and doing more incredible music. Sigh...................
+Level Anchorage From what I've read, the recording of the album was a bit of a nightmare for many reasons and the producer they ended up with (David Motion) didn't like guitars so he mixed them basically inaudible and the album ended up a whole lot more synth-based than what Rose and Jill would've preferred. Rose wasn't really into synths at all at the time and would've wanted to do a lot more of it with acoustic instruments, but it is what it is with studio time being on the record company's dime and all that.
Anyone mistakenly selecting the incorrect thumbs down icon, may indeed find themselves on the wrong side of a switchblade, and will quickly become a forgotten thought of yesterday.
I wish these were included in the Japanese import of their 1st cd, but they crammed what they had at the time into that one cd. So it would have had to been a double cd. That being said, it’s sad things went south for SS because they easily could have found a market for the Lolita fashion fans of today. But in many ways you could say they started that scene, which made them ahead of their time. Had they stayed together would they have gone more indie or more goth?? We will never have that answer. They deserved more hits and album sales, that’s for sure. But they must have drifted apart, and I don’t success would have fixed what was already being torn apart. Probably they would have needed less pressure from fans & the record company to deliver more music organically. Nevertheless, I’m happy this can be found online.
I agree with the other commentators here. Strawberry Switchblade's Peel Sessions are far superior to the LP and clutch of singles released in the mid-eighties. Strangely, the laid-back yet dark feel of these tracks is not a million miles from some songs issued by Into a Circle. However, although worked with Bee and Barry, she did not contribute to the song-writing! If you haven't already, I also recommend her collaborations with Death in June, Boyd Rice and other artists of that ilk.
Superior? A matter of opinion. Different certainly and I for one am glad to have both. Some of the LP arrangements are stunning. "Go Away" springs to mind.
@@vibroscope exactly! You can't really objectively judge which versions are better, it all comes down to taste. I like both Peel and Kid Jensen sessions and album versions.
@@Vampire_Nightshade Listen to dark 7 and that’s the objectively better sound if anything since it’s the perfect blend of both sounds. I’m just glad this even exist though lol
I like both versions of the songs... 10 James Orr Street sounds pretty different from each other and the LP version has a darker atmosphere and this version has better musicianship
What their debut album should have sounded like. Yet another great band whose career got derailed by a producer who thought he knew better than they did what they should sound like.
I couldn't agree more. The Peel and other BBC radio sessions represent the genius of Strawberry Switchblade. The album, otoh, is just awful, virtually unlistenable. I wish someone would release the radio sessions on CD. And what great songwriters Rose and Jill were. Sublime music.
Some interview she gave for the Melody Maker when the Cocteau Twins performed with Strawberry Switchblade, X-mal Deutschland, The Smiths, Icicle Works among others at the ICA sometime in 83. It was icicle works who opened for the Twins.
@@ralphdimagiba2879 damnnn they shit talked about them when they where playing in the same show? kind of whack. a lot of respect lost. still love both but damn. switchblade will always have my heart.
Where is the option Toby? This is a non monetorized channel... I have no control over where YT place their adverts or if various copyright holders decide to block... It's their prerogative.... Suggest you load a version on your channel for everyone who wants an add free version....
@@FruitierThanThou It's not an attack but a suggestion as mid song ads aren't a great way of building subs. It's your choice. Try this for just start/end ads. YTstudio > (select multiple videos) Edit > Ad settings > 'Turn on ads during video' toggle off >> Update videos
@@Toby_ATG Firstly, I think you have misunderstood the purpose of the channel... I care not for building subs... If people enjoy (some) of the content that is great, but whether people subscribe or not is not an issue for me... You never see requests for subscribe here & hit the bell otherwise a goblin will shite in your slippers overnight....This channel was for my friends initially overseas (from me)... My understanding is that the YT creator has no control over where YT inserts adverts,, This is done by a YT algorithm. . From what I see it is at around 10K views that a video runs the chance of including a mid video ad... I know you can have some control over the ads you see inasmuch if you are interested in Albanian Goats YT will try & direct ads for Albanian Goat Shampoo or nail clippers in your direction... the sheer melancholy of this early stuff is so enchanting
you should hear roses later stuff
Way ahead of its time, indie in the 90s wanted to be this...
What they accomplished with what they had is amazing. Really happy I found their music recently.
Just gorgeous. Brings tears to my eyes
I love them .Thank u for this beautiful music. Thank you love.
These versions are amazing, so warm sounding. I always thought synths made everything better but now I don't know
No, don't let acoustic warmth shake your faith in synth.
Like The Shangrilas formed a band with the members from The Velvet Underground. Wonderful.
Yeah...and somehow that equals out to the C86 era in Europe...the K Records scene in America...and many others
wish this recording was documented on vinyl. such a great striped down version of these songs. beautiful.
such well written songs!!! underrated band.
This 10 minutes that I cherish forever. Sooooo good, I can't even explain why, but I always go back to it.
Same here. So many of the Peel sessions are like that, just a few minutes of heaven, to come back to again and again.
Liked your Age of Reason Clip. Couldn't comment there, but glad to know a fellow Strawberry Switchblade enthusiast.
Beautiful songs and singing. Simply beautiful.
I still love Trees And Flowers.
I remember taping this off Peel at the time
Me too…
Such simple and pleasurable times :)
Same here. Had a cassette of this about 20 years ago
Great original songs that have aged well
Wow this is great, opens up a whole new side of this group...great tunes
this is so much better than the synth pop they made and I like there studio album but this style is do much more appealing to me

Perfect...after the ballad girl groups and folk acapella choir types...but before the indie rock jangle pop and twee post punkers

I agree. The drums on the debut get in the way of the music's subtle beauty (which thankfully we can hear on this Peel session.)

Note to young people, slightly tangy harmonies are a feature not a bug, and something you can’t get it if you autotune everything.
