I'm quite happy with my freshwater 1983 2.4 200hp Black Max, premix the Oil, easy to maintain myself, and never skips a beat, year after year after years and decade after decade and still going strong.

My 1980 Mercury model 90hp straight six two stroke motor is still running perfectly. I've never even synced the carburetors in all that time. She's The Tower of Power.

What I’ve been a Mercury Dealer since 02- Verado came to production 05 I have a set on our family boat. 7300 hrs flushed three times maybe. Tstats changed four times lowers once with sister act and you never touched on the five failures that actually happened. Jim Fry was one of my instructors from Hayward Cali. Along with Jp Brian from Atalanta. Let me tell you they brag about not having to flush they have positive drain systems all that’s left is crystals and when water touches again it washes away. The tstat is on the dump. Look at the nipple that’s one failure still to date. Map boots second failure fixed out of the five. Isolator boots the newest ones are the best out of four upgrades. Fsm floats five upgrades the best were the red wires. Coils still issues.
Then there is most common failures oil leak from drive gear, end cap failures idler pulleys, oil chain tensioner. This is a great one nine outta ten will not know how to diagnose.

My 2018 Mercury 115 ProXS threw a rod in the third cylinder last year! Only 86 hours and mercury couldn’t find the reason for this failure. I was at 3600 rpm and while blasting off in a tournament. Mercury replaced the motor with a 2023. I’m just curious to why this happened 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have a 2013 Mercury 60HP big foot that fuel is getting into the oil sump. I've tested the low pressure fuel pump and the diaphragm doesn't appear to be leaking. Now I've just used the hand pump bulb to check for leaking around the pump plunger but could still be leaking while the pump is pumping while the motor is running.

I don't think the thermostat problem is a Mercury problem, every outboard will have issues if you're running in salt water and not flushing right after use, a lot of outboard issues are down to poor maintenance or just not looking after it and if the motor is getting abused, I had a Yamaha for 15 years never ever let me down, I think that was because I kept it well maintained and I didn't abuse it.

They turned the outside people that didn't know how to build boats, and told my sister and I to kick rock's. True story my friend. And I don't know if you know this, when dad started it was Sea Star Boats. That was 1964, I had been playing in fibreglass for two years by then. To this day fibreglass doesn't bother me lol

I used to watch your show on Sundays but got tired of the false information you keep sending. I worked on boats for 50 years and I am a master tech on Mercury and Yamaha motors. Also I'm certified on Evinrude and Suzuki and Honda. Also Mercrusier and Volvo Penta stern drives. Also went to Indmar inboards. You said that Monterey boats were only middle class and you are wrong they are upper class. You don't have that much experience!

I am a professional in the Marine Industry, and what many consider as a "top tier" product base their judgement off outside appearances, and not the actual quality of the build/electrical wiring/rigging, etc. The boat builders know this all too well, and use it to their advantage to "cheap out" on the actual construction of their products. It costs money to employ skilled workers and put out a quality product. Rather than doing that, most boat builders hire the cheapest unskilled labor they can find, and produce "nice looking junk" with a premium price tag, to make the customer feel like they're buying a quality product.

  • @timlane3211

Congrats, I wish more younger folks realized you can make a great living at a quality marine tech. We need more in the industry as more and more experienced techs retire
BTW, I don't believe you have to work at a boat dealership to take the Master Tech training and test... I'll check with some of my Merc contacts to confirm. (as you stated in a previous comment, I spread false information on this channel)
