I worked for Pan Am in an office at JFK in the 60’s. While waiting for my interview I struck up a conversation with a young lady sitting next to me. She was applying to be a stewardess. She was absolutely beautiful! She was called in before me and I saw her crying as she left her interview. I asked what happened. She was told to come back when her complexion cleared up. I swear I did not see any blemishes on that girl. Pan Am was VERY selective . Looks and weight were key. This show is spot on!

In 1969, my father took my brother and I to JFK to see off his friend on his honeymoon. They were flying to Europe on Pan Am. Nowadays flying is no fun at all. I’m glad I fly very infrequently.
That’s a crazy notion compared to now! My dad flew for United from 1970-2004, so I had lots of experience with getting to move around airports with little security. I remember a story he told me about how a crew member was late for work and as the plane was starting to taxi, the guy jumped over the fence from the crew parking lot and ran out to get on the plane. It was Hawaii, so I assume they weren’t using jet ways at the time anyway. Good old days!
As a little boy I would sometimes be taken by a stewardess to the cockpit mid flight. I’d sit in the copilot seat for a couple minutes. Then they’d pin wings with the airline logo on my shirt. Those were wonderful days.
Low ratings I believe… not many people watched it when it aired. It’s getting a resurgence because of Margot’s star power though which is good. Hopefully we’ll get a sequel series once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are done. Hopefully it’ll be better than the original series with the better pay for the staff.
I’d always wanted to be a flight attendant. This show aired when I was in my senior year in college and it inspired me so much. 8 years of duty now retired… what a memorable memory❤
It’s so sad this show was cancelled so quickly and wasn’t really allowed to find an audience. I think it was just too ahead of it’s time - if released today on Netflix something I think we would get a few seasons at least.
@@bensmyth450 I would say streaming platforms and the fact that now a days it’s totally the normal for a show to have 8/10 episodes a season. Do you remember when shows like desperate housewives or Greys anatomy would have like 22 episodes a season - and mid season break etc. I think where this show failed was that the channel tried to drag it out and never quite understood what they wanted this show to be where as it started off really strong and they could have wrapped up season 1 in 8 episodes etc
Small details are what made this show so great. When they took off in the beginning, the tower said "Idlewild Tower", many people don't know that Idlewild Airport was renamed John F Kennedy International. Kudos to the shows creators for that little detail. Amazing! Can't believe i've never seen this show before.
@@Look_What_I_Did And yet, I'd wager less than 10% of the audience remembered that detail. It had been JFK for almost 50 years when this show was first broadcast in 2011. Anyone younger than that wouldn't have ever heard it referred to any other way.
1969 I was 17 yo on my way to Germany as an exchange student. PanAm was the plane that would deliver me to my destination. Dress, pantyhose and heels, it felt so glamorous to be flying. The flight attendants were kind and beautiful. I wanted to be them.

When I was a teenager in the mid 60s, I flew with my parents from NYC to Miami on Eastern Airlines. We were served filet mignon on real plates and received cloth napkins and silver plate utensils. And that was just a coach flight. Of course, we dressed up for it. Everyone on that flight was well dressed.

My aunt was a Pan Am stewardess during this era. My summers visiting her ranch in Houston were the most delightful I can remember. Her home was such a welcoming place, I wish I could have spent more summers there.
PanAm was such an iconic fixture of my childhood. Me and my brother had some kind of matching Pan Am overalls when we were little, I remember being heartbroken when I grew out of mine. In January 1991 I was on my way to LA on a temporary work visa. When I left London on a PanAm 747 it was the most famous airline in the world, by the time we landed in LA it was gone...
I was very fortunate my father worked for the Pan Am and we use to fly this flight during the 70s and early 80s, New York to London, every year and spend our summer vacations abroad. I miss those days. I don’t think the airline hostesses lived this kind of lifestyle but it is kind of exciting to see this.
My older sister was in the pipeline to be a major carrier stewardess with Pan Am/TWA in the late 60's. i remember a representative coming to our house and interviewing my sister and explaining the training program. It started with a grueling/very selective "charm school" that if you passed you then went to the even more selective technical school. And he emphasized the strict weight ranges by height that had to be maintained. It was a very elite selection process.
That was because in those days they actually cared about having their employees put forth a professional and attractive appearance which in turn helps to ease the potentially nervous passenger and helps to instill confidence in the flight and its crew. And that confidence was better placed on the flight attendant of yesteryear vs. those of today because the industry as a whole was much better regulated and higher standards were to be maintained and so flight crew selection & training were also held to higher standards. Nowadays, things such as tattoos, body piercings, freakish looking hair styles and colors, and excessively overwieght are all accepted and sometimes even encouraged. Sad really. I worked for a USA regional airline in the 1980s for just over 5 years and I can tell you that even then these things would never have been allowed. EDIT: After doing some quick research it appears that most airlines of today don't allow their flight attendants to display tattoos, but that is changing.
They also had to have some knowledge of treating medical emergencies. Looking at how low the standards have dropped in FA hiring it's hard to watch this as well as the decline of passenger civility. I was in the airline biz for twenty one years.
Was your older sister a “stewardess” or “hostess.” My first flight ever was Pan Am from JFK to Europe in 1976. I still remember it as if it were yesterday. I am forcing my memory and I think the terminology evolved from hostess to stewardess to flight attendant. Oh well.
@@bobbrown8155 all I remember is Stewardess but i was pretty young at the time so may be transferring my later memories of flying in the early 80's when they were still called stewardesses
You're joking right? People would go crazy about it being too white! They would insist on more minorities on the planes, however non-historical that would be!
The fact that Margot Robbie plays a PanAm flight attendant and Barbie and you can also get Barbie Flight Attendant in PanAm garb is just a glorious thing
Look at all the positive comments, surely someone will bring back the series. With good acting and fast moving plots , it was way better than the brain numbing fluff we forced to endure.
I saw every episode and was sorry it was cancelled. It had a throwback ABC glam to it. I had never heard of Margot Robbie, but could immediately see she was going to be bigger than the show. She was stunning.
I also used to watch this show when it first aired on ABC. I liked Colette played by Karine Vanasse. Anyway, a lot of great actors came on this show including David Harbour, Goran Visnjic, Ann Dowd, William Abadie, and of course Margot Robbie, who was not famous at the time and she was really great in this. I remember ABC cancelling a slew of good shows after just a season back then.
I got tired of catching only parts of a show or series online, or finding out it was no longer on Netflix or Prime. A while back I started buying the dvds of series and movies I really like. It's nice to be able to watch things whenever you want, have people over for movie nights or just binge watch a whole series at once.
first saw Margot Robbie in this show and I said this actress is STUNNING. I'm gonna see her face again even after they cancelled this show. AND LOOK WHERE WE ARE NOW!!!!! Christina Ricci also amazing in this!
Love this series! So disappointing when they discontinue a show, leaving the supporting public with unanswered questions. I did buy the series on dvd, have watched it over and over.
I remember watching the series and loved it!! It gave me the aura of Airport (the original classic in 1970). Did not recognize Margot Robbie at the time but she did a great job!
What I love about this show is that they give windows to the different culture of the world back in the 60’s, like one place have stark different vibes from the other and even when some of them are unfortunate stereotypes, the rest are pretty good.
One of my favorite tv series of all time, I watched when originally aired but can't see how they cancelled it. It have all it takes to have multiple seasons. Even nowadays shows doesn't have it.
Today years old that I realized that she was Margot Robbie. I loved this show, and loved her character as well. Such a shame they never gave it a renewal to give it a good ending. If it had been released in the streaming years it would have been a succes and it would have gotten closure.
You and me both. I remember when this came out and all I remember was the ads and everything centered around Christina Ricci (huge fan of her in Yellow Jackets btw) but I had no idea that Margot Robbie was in it till now.
Goddess? You are starstruck by her, and it is understandable, she is really good-looking, but she is not a goddess, she is just a pretty actress whose career isn't really developing so well. I am not sure what is the problem, but it is obvious she was cast in too many films that were box office bombs, and that is highly damaging to her career. And those "goddesses have a short span, at best 20 years, and after that, she will not be looking like "a goddess"... I have nothing against her, but you are putting her on a pedestal she didn't deserve.

As a pilot and lover of airplanes and history of aviation, I loved this series! Mike Vogel is a real world pilot and it shows on the cockpit scenes, that feel quite natural and true to life. The venerable 707 is an extra character in the show, the PAN AM terminal in JFK is reconstructed in 3D and my only complaint is the animations of the 707 maneuvering, they don't look so realistic sometimes.
I'm glad they didn't make a hash out of the flying scenes and followed some of cockpit culture... sorta. I'm not sure anyone would get into discussions of the intimate details of their outside life while managing the plane in flight, but ......Hollywood. The only other observation I would add, is that both pilots are too young for their posts. By 1963, the airlines were staffed with lots of mid-forties pilots who moved out of military flying into commercial. But not a grey hair between 'em with these guys? And for a high profile inaugural service, the spot would go to a high timer, someone in their 40s or 50s. But it's not about aviation, is it? Would have liked to have seen them do more with it.
well it's 2010s animations... even when we saw earlier aircrash investigation/mayday series, the animation is still rough.. but it is quite good and logical compare to other B rated movies about aviation...
@@riconui5227You’re spot on regarding age appropriate actor selection, and high value flight assignments. However, in regards to inflight antics pilots talk about exactly the same topics on the flight deck as we discuss over coffee or at dinner.

Almost a decade ago, I worked with two of the directors on this show for Scandal, another show on ABC which started a year after Pan AM was cancelled. One of them, Julie Anne, warmly shared with me her eye-opening experiences working with the VFX Supervisor on Pan Am. I recall that talk fondly, as a young VFX Supervisor myself. Seems like this show was not just a favorite among viewers but the also the people who worked on it. I haven't seen the show but I always feel sad when a show beloved by the cast and crew ends.

Organic growth it's great without buying millions of bot viewerships like Mickey. It helps us the producers prove to the studio this type of content works and the audience like it. Thank you.😍
When you represent an Airline , you are on tip of your toes for the entire duration , I used to fly as an inflight crew for an Airline that's why i can only begin to understand how your entire crew had to do lot of hard work to come up with this episode ✔️
Usual network shenanigans. Budget issue, and bad airtime scheduling. At least some of the actors fare better later on, like David Harbour and Margot Robbie.
I remember watching this series when it first came out and thinking what a gorgeous woman Margot Robbie was! In fact, she was the main reason I watched the show. Watching the pilot again just now, I appreciate how well the Cold War aspect was woven into the plot. Just twenty years after the end of WWII, the 1960's was defined by the ongoing tension between capitalism and communism battling for World power. The notion that the Pan Am flight attendents were asked to be secret agents made for a great subplot, and I love that "Brigitte" was an agent who was somehow mixed up in the Cuban Bay of Pigs affair. This series was really well done and deserved to be continued.
As a child and teenager I flu Pan Am and TWA, it was always a great time. I was so fortunate to visit many overseas destinations Totally different from today airlines.
Deregulation opened flying up to the masses. It used to be reserved for the rich and famous. Because routes were assigned and any competition was strictly illegal.
These ladies were the reason I wanted to be a Stewardess. We flew often for vacation when I was child in the 60’s. I attained my dream. Unfortunately it was January 2001. Wasn’t the same, especially after 9/11. I got through 15 years before clipping my wings for good. It was great but not nearly as fabulous as what they enjoyed.
but also more expensive to travel (probably) it costed $173 to fly from new York to London on the new "tourist" classs in 1952. people used to earn about 2k a year.
First Class on long haul legacy airlines today is far far more luxurious than flying was back then. When people make comments like this, they don't seem to recognise that everything comes at a cost. Modern air travel overall offers far less perks because that is what the public have demanded through their obsession with cheap flights.

Yeah, it’s pretty much a bus with wings now. This is a nicely-made reminder of a time when we were more civilized.
That was before people realized that planes could be used as weapons...
@@hifi6638 they were wonderful days FOR MEN
What! So many actors that I love in this show! So upsetting how many shows get canceled so quickly
How the hell did I miss this show? Apparently cancelled? This pilot was outstanding!!!
Why the hell would one want a show on Pan Am airlines? Are you that bored in life?
I’d always wanted to be a flight attendant. This show aired when I was in my senior year in college and it inspired me so much. 8 years of duty now retired… what a memorable memory❤
Retired after 8 years? You must have made a fortune!
What airline?
It’s so sad this show was cancelled so quickly and wasn’t really allowed to find an audience. I think it was just too ahead of it’s time - if released today on Netflix something I think we would get a few seasons at least.
Why was it ahead of its time?
@@bensmyth450 I would say streaming platforms and the fact that now a days it’s totally the normal for a show to have 8/10 episodes a season.
Do you remember when shows like desperate housewives or Greys anatomy would have like 22 episodes a season - and mid season break etc.
I think where this show failed was that the channel tried to drag it out and never quite understood what they wanted this show to be where as it started off really strong and they could have wrapped up season 1 in 8 episodes etc
Netflix cancels a lot of shows after one season, even with good reception/viewership.
I wish Xtina Ricci got her due credit/flowers. she's not only legendary but she's still so very talented. I want her to be a movie star again
She's in Wednesday on Netflix
She's on yellowjackets

Small details are what made this show so great. When they took off in the beginning, the tower said "Idlewild Tower", many people don't know that Idlewild Airport was renamed John F Kennedy International. Kudos to the shows creators for that little detail. Amazing! Can't believe i've never seen this show before.
That is not a small detail, and not some obscure fact.
I’m also watching for the first time with fascination.
In the last episode too the pilots make a deal about how strange it feels to no longer call it Idlewild since the name is recently changed to JFK.
Plus they showed the smog of 1963 New York City.
We’re they rly that gorgeous? Sorry if that’s a dumb question
@@NiNa-vs6hb I am the same age but a guy. Yes, they were gorgeous, but so were the passengers. I always flew in a coat and tie, in high school and college. Cannot overstate how different travel, flying and life in general was back then.
@@janoswimpffen7305 I'm way younger and didn't live in those times but I once read a comment here on RUclips complaining that decades ago passengers would dress nicely when travelling by airplane whereas today they wear shorts and flip flops. This was an awesome show. Should never have been cancelled.
Said nobody sane. It was soon boring , and shallow , too. Worse , another of a thousand too female centric, sexist against males, and really superficial storylines . The runaway bride bit is so worn and overdone. Boring !
I'm absolutely fascinated by this decade where people dressed up to fly on a jet! ❤️
That's because only rich people could afford to fly. Now almost anyone can afford to fly.
More people dressed up in the 1960s in public. Watch movies from then.
I'm not sure you understand. Those clothes were normal clothes for the day. It wasn't really dressing up. People just wore nice clothes normally everyday and cared about how they looked.
My grandma was a Pan Am flight attendant. She loved it.
Back when FA's had class and took pride in their jobs.
If I could go back in time to my 20s, I would sooooo become an International flight attendant!

@@cmaden78 yeah, some things were better back then, but those requirements for flight attendants? That's medieval!
