  • For the West, India has always been a mystical land of snake charmers or IT nerds. It has taken a long time for artists like Aziz Ansari, Lily Singh, Hasan Minhaj and Mindy Kailing to break the stereotypes and fight for the better representation of Indians in recent films and T.V. shows through authentic storytelling.

But its south indian flim industry gets a lot of recognition. Phenomenal actors like Dhanush, Allu Arjun, Vijay, etc. are being recognised and being showered with extreme love all over india. The films that stereotypes south india aren't even recognised ones. But what about the North eastern actors. People don't even know they exist cause they are often cast as extras like watchman or chotu or some such shitty role. And this stereotype about NEerns and Nepalis being watchman or some other minimum waged worker can be seen in all indians. The north and south are unified when they have to discriminate them. And this isn't all but i won't go all in, i just want to say think of the NE as indians too. This doesn't mean you can't share your opinion, this is just me sharing mine.

This HAS to change. If Tamil girls need to be seen as beautiful, you need to cast dark skinned actresses alongside superstars. In India, there are more smartphones that people so it’s practically impossible that there’s a person who doesn’t know how to use a smartphone. What Indian movies do is as problematic though. For a few years now ethnically white women have been passed off as Indian women in a variety of regional as well as mainstream Bollywood movies. Kalki and Amy Jackson (Katrina Kaif as well though most people believe the myth of her being half Kashmiri) for example have or have in the past played ethically Indian women despite being white. This is problematic on 2 counts. Firstly the appearance of Indian women is being misrepresented, which is setting an unrealistic beauty ideal for them. Secondly it’s cultural appropriation (I exclude Kalki from this because at least she was born in India). Many of these ladies can’t speak the language and, with the exception of kalki again, are very mediocre at acting - which is doing nothing for female representation in film narratives. Background dancers are overwhelmingly white too, as if theres an abundance of white people in India. Other countries like the Uk and America actually have sizeable south Asian populations. India doesn’t have the same ethnic diversity. I’m of Indian origin but I’ve never lived in India (but I’m connected through cultural identity). I do feel that Indians are their own worst enemies and hypocritical. South Asians actors in the west are doing a commendable job and Hollywood is changing, albeit slowly. Indian movies are just regressing though.

It’s not a coincidence that the whole Bollywood industry is now confirming to a western ideal of beauty be that body shapes or skin colour (all the women are bleached now including previously darker skinned actresses like Kajol and Bipasha). For example I am British - I’ve never lived a day in India BUT I can’t and won’t try and pass off as ethically white. Also, unlike as is the case in the uk, there isn’t as much ethnic diversity to make what you say plausible. I mean how many white people actually hold Indian citizenship? I bet it’s far fewer then the 2% of the total population of Britain who are ethnically Indian (but British citizens). It’s just not representative, so it boils down to the white skin fascination.

Not really... it must have been a reality when we got independence but India has progressed a lot since then...

Yes, but those realities are used as an insult. Like eating curries and applying oil to our hair, these are true but looked down by Hollywood.

Ever since my parents were kids, we are taught that "INDIA IS A DEVELOPING COUNTRY" and to this day we are still taught the same thing. Don't even start the conversation about development.
As far as personal growth is concerned, "Nosy Nagging Indian Aunty" stereotype is very much a reality (unless you come from a highly educated community)

I don't get why y'all want hollywood to properly represent something as diverse as Indian culture. Simpsons is a comedy. All their characters are stereotypes and caricatures. It's satire. The only valid examples of stereotypes in this video were in the sixties and eighties. Aziz ansari played tom haverford in parks and rec, mindy kaling was in the office and even got her own show. Dev Patel has done several other great films such as Lion, Hotel Mumbai,Chappie, The Man who knew infinity. He is also playing a literal knight in The Green Knight. If anything, Hollywood is doing a better job at representation and diversity than bollywoo
