- In this video I would like to share to you how to line and prime a dialysis machine (Fresenius model 5008).
You will also see how a patient is connected on dialysis machine.
In this session I will be using a right tunnelled internal jugular line as my access for dialysis.
I will also be featuring on this video how to properly collect blood samples from the vascular access.

hi. I think there is something wrong with your connection of the dialysate coupling. should be if the red is on the top, in your dialysate section the arrow should be going out. so in this machine, should be red to blue and blue to red as what we saw in the arrow.

Just a thought, do you think it would make much of a difference if you leave the venous line attached to the drainbag after starting the treatment, then only connect the venous line to the patient once the line is filled with blood, that way you prevent the saline that you used to prime the line to be introduced to the patient?
Hi Cealizar, thanks for your inquiry.
Years ago we used to connect venous lines on drain bags when priming. Nowadays dialysis RO water are supplied online (this means the RO water is centrally supplied straight to the back of the dialysis machine).
Priming blood either by using a drain bag or straight connect doesn’t make a lot of difference. Straight connect however, is beneficial on patients with low starting blood pressure as you maintain the volume of the extra corporeal circuit which is approximately (300mls). This extra volume can then be added to the fluid removal as needed.
If you are worried about saline’s effect when mixed in blood, NaCl is isotonic to the red blood cell at a certain concentration, hence NaCl 0.9% maintains its isotonic properties and does not affect the red blood cells.

Can i ask how do you prime and return blood using saline in the fresenius 5008s machine? 😮
Hi there, thanks for your enquiry, you can just hang a bag of saline and connect your arterial line to prime, same procedure with wash back or blood return there is the option of saline or online also connect your arterial line to the bag of saline to do this.
We don’t use saline nowadays as we have centralised RO water supply around the unit. It’s simply plugging in the provided RO supply to the back of dialysis machine then prime and wash back using the online system. Hope this helps 😊

Yes clexane is injected on the arterial port at the start of the blood prime.
