    I think a lot of us end up playing 'golf swing' because we can't keep it in play off the tee. It's not a matter of chasing longer range but trying to develop consistency and never succeeding. Love the content none the less, take it easy o/

      Amen, brother. As a 22 handicapper I find making decent contact with the ball extremely challenging. I don’t hit the ball as far as Adam but I miss the fairway 70% of the time and roughly half of those misses I would say are big misses leading to blocked out second shots or penalties. The worst thing is that however straight or wayward off the tee I am I can score almost anything.
      Constantly having to go through a mental checklist every shot just to improve my chances of making a decent contact is mentally draining as there are clearly other factors to consider on the course as well. But on those occasions when I just step up and hit it the results can be really bad.

      @@robsengahay5614 This might sound harsh, but my advice would be to stay off the course, get some lessons and grind it on the range until you can hit reasonably consistently - they don’t have to be brilliant but maximum 4/10 “big misses”.
      I know Adam says don’t worry so much about the swing, but to be honest funny looking as his swing is, it is very consistent - for all his self-deprecating chat he doesn’t miss many fairways.
      While at the range you can also settle on a club that you feel relatively comfortably striking. When you get back on the course, use that for tee shots every time if possible. For a while anyway until you get comfortable with other clubs too, which will come.
      Playing off 22 it is way better to be 120-150 yards and on the fairway than 150-180 in heavy rough or stuck behind a tree. So if your comfortable club is a 7, 8 or even 9 iron, just go with it. Even if it’s a par 5. 4x straight 9 irons will get you within range with a good chance of a decent score - if you’re “tidy inside 100yds” as Adam says.
      If you’re playing a course that makes this impossible (eg if you have to carry 150+ from the tee), find a different course! Seriously. Don’t punish yourself, golf is meant to be enjoyable.
      Grooving a reasonably reliable swing on the range means you don’t have to worry when you’re on the course - avoiding the mentally draining checklist you talked about. And having a couple of go-to clubs you know you can hit fairly consistently is a massive help with the mental aspect too.
      Finally, if people take the piss when you get the 7-iron out for a tee shot on a par 5, just ignore them or find new playing partners.
      Apologies for both the length of comment and the unsolicited advice! But it pains me to hear of people struggling like this.

      @@vonteflon Doesn’t sound harsh at all. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. I agree with you but been there, done that.
      I have had many lessons from different pros and have spent many many hours on the driving range trying to get a consistent swing and I will continue to work on it.
      After many years I have come to the conclusion that I just don’t have the ability to play the game much better. I still enjoy the good strikes and mainly laugh off the bad ones.

    I have been following the words of yourself and golf sidekick for about 3 months now and dropped from high 90's into consistent high 80's. The biggest change was realising I'm not that good, and the safe shot is the best even if it's not GIR or 300m down the fairway. Take your medicine, play +1 where you need to, Pars will come, birdies will come and there will always be blow-up holes. Keep it up 👍👍

Was always watching tutorials from basically professional golfers and it made me feel I was 5+ years away from being any good at all (being a returning beginner with my recently set new PB at 109). But the way you show golf, it makes me realise breaking 100 or even 90 isn’t miles away. It’s just being clever with your shots, fairly consistent connection and keeping my head.

    Funny how there are phases to golf development that a lot of us have in common. I came to the realization not to long ago that I needed to abandon the idea of having a "pretty" golf swing and focus on having an "effective" swing that was simply good enough to make the ball go generally where I want it to most of the time. I am getting much closer to that goal than I ever was with having a pretty swing, and keeping the ball in play a lot more. Now I can really focus on honing the 100 and in game to see those scores start dropping.

    • @Real28
      @Real28 2 года назад +3

      Of course he pins my comment when I forget a word LOL
      *To move
      Story time: I was nearly scratch in High School. I had _no_ course management. I simply brute forced my way around and it's probably why I was shooting mid 70s and not low 70s and high 60s.
      Now, 20+ years from that and took a big long break from the game, my swing is shite compared to then but I _feel_ like I can shoot similar scores because now I have wisdom. I know I don't need to brute force my way around and I can score very well by taking the high percentage play. Let's not act like we don't know what that is, either. We walk up to a shot and know what's a risk and what isn't. Stop taking so many risks and watch the scores slowly drop.
      It's not flashy but it puts a good number on the card. Last year was my "comeback" year and I carded several rounds in the low 80s and flirted with 70s. And that was trying to knock off about 7 yrs of rust. This year we're taking aim at my HS numbers.

      I agree with this, I really play aggressively for center green rather than the pin now. With this having a confident bunker game just in case ( which in the past could land me a triple or double). Overall limit mistakes to bogeys and a rare double that's really been getting my scores down.

    -ending with a "9 hole match" good lies, garbage lies, bump and runs, flops, etc...always finishing.

    If you consider a " blowup hole" a double that's pretty good. I consider a blowup hole being 2 or 3 over after 12 or 13 holes then all of a sudden I'm putting for an 8 or 9. Then it's hard to stay focused and you go 38 on the front and 48 on the back. It's that 38 that keeps me coming back every week for more torture.

My short game needs work, but until I can get inside one hundred yards in fewer than three or four strokes with consistency, the short game is going to have to wait. You have the same swing nearly every time you swing. I envy you. I've been playing this game for nearly forty years. I identify with your game. I hit about the same speed/ distance and my swing looks nothing like Adam Scott's! In Oz most golf course still have only the forward tees ( red= women) and white ( men), making it difficult to move forward on the tee and not be told that you forgot your dress. It makes sense to me to encourage new golfers and slower swing players to keep playing, to adopt multiple tee positions. With the two tee positions only set up, long hitters have a huge advantage hitting GIR more often, assuming they can keep the ball in play off the tee!
    What to do when the putter goes AWOL is a video I need. It happened to me recently after a gradual trend of improvement with putts inside the 3 m from the pin (my weakness).

    I agree that scoring really takes place inside 100 yards. But the problem with so many of us is getting it into play. The first shot (regardless of length of hole) sets everything else up and is, therefore, the most important one. But a decent short game then keeps my par from becomning a bogey, my bogey from becoming a double, my double from beconing a triple, etc.

You think people think Wolf has a good swing or Furk lol. Too many people try to change there swing when its not there. Bugs me lol. One thing watch your miss putts more dont do the massive body jerk or w.e just focus on the ball roll. You can see where to aim on your putts back at the hole and prevents three putts. Other then that amazing short game you dont have distance but you make up for it within your yardage. Tips would be hard for you lol.

    Consistency is key, thats my problem. I did a swing analysis on a GC quad recently. Using a 7-iron for the analysis, my swing speed topped out at 96mph, longest shot was 206. Golf pro essentially said had tour level speed and distance, i just need some lessons to work on tweaking a few things to get more consistency and narrow down my dispersion.
    Like most (some?), if i could get my driver off the tee to stay under control, id be in the 70's. I lose a lot of balls and thus strokes off the tee, but i LOVE the long ball. Its a curse. My longest recorded drive is 390. Im 6-4, 260lb.

    i would add the importance of consistent strikes to help lower scores....for example, I keep the ball in play but there are multiple times a round where i hit an iron a couple inches behind the ball and chunk it.

    Curious about 2 things. 1) Could you explain your stats? I assume a “green light” drive is a drive that may miss the fairway but still gives you a swing at the green? Is a “scramble” an up and down for par only? What if you hit some bad shots and get up and down for a bogey - doesn’t count because it’s not for par? 2) How do you use your stats to analyze your play and what you need to do better? I’d love to hear what you mentally say to yourself as you analyze the stats for this round. Great stuff.

    I agree that swing doesn’t matter to an extent. But let’s be honest, most people trying to break 90 are not keeping it in play off the tee. The most important area isn’t

    • @youtubestroller5549
      @youtubestroller5549 2 года назад +1

      Fully agree with that sentiment.
      Sure, swing doesn't really matter anymore once you hit 95 out of 100 shots well. At that point putting in hours to get to 97 shots out of 100 perfectly or gaining another 10 yards on your 7 iron really hits some serious diminishing returns.
      But for players like me, who started only a few months ago, where the amount of fats, thins, tops and chunks decides whether I'm on the green after 3 swings or 8, we could be playing our short game like Rory McIlroy and still come out with triple bogeys or worse all the time.

    Key is to also play yardages that make sense for your game. Most play tees too difficult for them. Women still not offered tees forward enough at many courses.

    Despite your "non Tour "swing, you don't duff the ball very often and you're insanely straight given the mechanics. I feel like this is not common for guys with "typical amateur" swings. The swing doesn't matter if someone is as capable as you and able to get the club face squared more often than not.... Otherwise it probably does matter at least a little bit.

    • @GolfSidekick

      I believe the message of the video wasn't about being as good as him, but simply breaking 90. Of course if you are struggling to break 90, you will have to develop a lot more consistency to shoot the same scores as he does.

    • @wadesworld6250
      @wadesworld6250 2 года назад

      Slicing is almost always an over-the-top swing path. However, it's not any easy thing to correct, or sometimes even realize you're doing. You've never swung from inside-out or only done it accidentally, so you don't really know what correct feels like. It's also difficult for someone to get you to feel. Best advice is to work with a pro. Even then it often takes time to make the transition.

      @Real28 2 года назад

      Chris Ryan on YT has really good videos on swing path. As Wadesworld said, it's usually an over the top move.
      However, if you can, find $50-100 and go take a lesson that gives you some drills. Will be the best money you spend on golf.

    It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the advantages of being shorter vs. longer, especially for the amateur. For example - I'm the 9i 150 guy and I used to be the 7i 150 guy. With the extra distance I do feel like I'm better off the tee (and FOR SURE a better technical golfer), however I'm not necessarily better in my approaches - the simple reason being both of our SW are about 100 yards. I play my SW at 105 - if I mishit in my approach and need to hit 130? Adam hits a 9i, I'm kinda in between clubs - needing to hit my flushed 50 degree (which is more comfortably a 115/120) or a 3/4 PW shot that I don't totally have my mind around yet. I have 3 clubs for ranges between 100-140 whereas Adam has 5. That means I need to have the higher degree of failure shots of 3/4 shots to fill in those gaps.
    I personally think there can be an advantage of being a shorter golfer if the course management is good, even though if I'm 300 yards out hitting to 100 yards I'm hitting a 6i and Adam is hitting a 4hy. I should theoretically have an easier shot, but how often is the result going to be significantly different? It is FOR SURE an advantage if I have my wedge game going. But it's not an automatic advantage if, especially for the amateur, full shots tend to work better overall.
    Just a concept I've had for awhile and it would be interesting to see your take on that.

    • @gregorylu
      @gregorylu 2 года назад

      What you should be doing is understanding how to hit those partial wedge shots. Your grinding sessions at the range should not be full swings with your drivers/woods/long irons or even 7i, it's clear your grind should be nailing partial wedges, learning to take distance off them. Example: I hit my 54 about 115, but my 58 goes 95. I need to learn to take distance off for the yardages between 100-110 with my 54, and that's what I grind at the range to make sure I have those numbers.

    • @Pfuetz4
      @Pfuetz4 2 года назад

      @@gregorylu I agree with you, but I think that's exactly my point. If you read the end part careful, I say that it's for sure an advantage if I can have my wedge game going - for me that means my 3/4s and 1/2's are on point. It is something I practice a lot.
      HOWEVER, my point is that the extra distance can actually complicate the game - where a guy with Adam's distance doesn't need to practice a 3/4 50 that goes 110 versus 120 full. The shorter player either chooses a 50 or a PW. To me, that is a simpler choice and automatically easier choice in that specific situation - and I'd argue that is the situation where it matters most. Because we both know it takes quite a bit of practice to get those 3/4's timing down consistently with not rushing the backswing, letting the lag set, not pulling it, etc.

    • @cobra7282
      @cobra7282 2 года назад

      @@Pfuetz4 regardless of your distances you will always have to deal with in between shots. On top of that being shorter simply means that there will be less opportunities to get around the green in 2 on par 4s. You simply cap your abilities when you don't develop extra distance.

    • @Pfuetz4
      @Pfuetz4 2 года назад

      @@cobra7282 I don't disagree. Again I think I say that. I am a better golfer than I was with my distances, it just doesn't automatically mean I score better. And I think the reason for that is that amateur x-factor. And a shorter golfer will have caps on the tee's they can play, where I don't.
      For example, I don't really notice a massive difference in my scores playing a 6500 yard course versus a 6700 or 7200 yard course. Biggest differences is almost always longer monster par-3's. An extra 30 yards on any given tee doesn't really bother me on the par-4's and 5's.
      None of that automatically means I'm neater in the approach distance, the distances that matter - which I would argue is the 100-150. I am saying that once each respective player is in that range, a shorter golfer has a less complicated decision making process and potentially easier to execute shot than a longer golfer.

    • @cobra7282
      @cobra7282 2 года назад

      @@Pfuetz4 Even as a shorter player you will still have at least like 10 yard gaps between clubs and thus have to go hard at a shot or soft at a shot in order to dial the distance in. If you have a gap in your wedges that is something like 20 yards than maybe get fitted to close the gap a little bit. The other question I would have is would you be more accurate from say 140 yards with a PW as a longer hitter or a 7 iron as a short hitter? To me the shorter more lofted PW would be more accurate from 140 than with a shorter hitter using a 7 iron, not to mention more control and stopping power because of the trajectory.

    Do you have a lower handicap by playing from the front tees? Im in Scotland and average is 7200yrds. We have ladies, gents and comp tees. My handicap is based on men's tees. Do i get a cut by playing from the front tees?

    • @lindsaynewell6319
      @lindsaynewell6319 2 года назад +3

      Check out a World Handicap System video - each course has a rating from each tee box and your course hcap will vary based on which tees you play off. Your score will be adjusted as well, so 80 from the front tees could result in the same adjusted score as 90 from the back tees so it all evens out.
      Here is an example from one of my local courses - 8.7 shot difference in course rating between front and back tees (73.7 vs 65.0):
      Hawk Tees: 6854 yds - 73.7 - 142
      Cinnabar Tees: 6349 yds - 70.9 - 138
      Cinn./Quicks. Tees: 5922 yds - 69.1 - 132
      Quicksilver Tees: 5606 yds - 67.9 - 127
      Quicks/Oak Tees: 5166 yds - 65.8 - 122
      Oak Tees: 5030 yds - 65.0 - 116
      For me as 10.6 WHS hcap, I'd get a course hcap of 15 off the Hawk tees and only 4 off the Oak tees (and somewhere in between for the middle tees). So your course hcap is based off a combo of your WHS hcap, the course rating from the tee box you use.
      Hope that helps.

    I think it would be good to break up mistakes inside 100 yards or ( chips and pitches) vs bad putts. I think a lot of beginners or even mid handicappers expect to get up and down too often vs just getting it on the green and giving yourself a putt for par. For the avg beginner even when it comes to short game, they game gets much easier when you simply try get it on the green or even just the same quadrant as the flag and working on 2 putting from there.
