done a tone of these repairs over the years. I have boxes of old broken down systems and drives I still hang onto for some reason. Great to see the 360 still getting love in late 2020. Thanks for sharing!
Bought an xbox for cheap from a guy who said he hadn't used it in a long time. Had this problem. Upon looking at it I realized he had taken it apart to try to clean the lens but it hadn't worked, and then knowingly sold us a faulty xbox. But thanks to your video we still got the better end of the deal!! It works now!
I ordered these parts almost a year ago the laser disc and the belts and didn't get around to it till yesterday and I have a functioning Xbox 360 again, the 360 had some awesome games back in the day so it was worth fixing.
I’m a total newbie to this stuff and I’m going to try and do this replacement myself. btw, at 2:54 why does this need to be removed? Thanks for the clear and helpful video. Good production value
Part is $8.47 as of Sept., 2022. Just ordered a laser. I'm going to give this a whirl. Will report back with result. This video was perfectly shot. Everything's clearly stated, with beautiful videography. Thanks a bunch!
As a couple others have mentioned without any response yet, The grey trey that the disc sits on wont slide out. It is stuck in a fixed position. How do you release it?
You have to turn the little gear wheel under it with a flat head screw driver. Once you spin it about a 1/8 turn it then ejects manually by pulling in it.
Hey, thanks for the great video. I followed your steps and replaced the laser, but I noticed that a couple of the smaller gear teeth are broken. So it looks like I need a new drive. Where do I look in order to find the correct number to try and order another drive? Or is that even possible. Thanks.
Unfortunately in order to replace the drive you have to desolder the old circuit board from the current drive and solder it to the new Drive. This is because the drive itself is tied to the machine. The whole reason why we replaced the laser instead of the whole Drive is because of this. So I would see if you can get replacement gears to actually fix the old Drive. If you do ultimately need to replace the drive you'll either have to install a mod chip into the console or do a circuit board swap. Both options are definitely doable.
For those asking how do you open the tray on the dvd drive… Use a screw driver under the tray on the small plastic gear to turn it. . Then pull the tray. It won’t come out unless you help it by turning the gear about a 1/8 turn with a small flat head screw driver.

I thought it was weird that I was about to access that fourth screw and you weren't but when I looked closer I realized that that plastic part that covers your screw just doesn't extend as far as mine. Weird.
Nice video man Good one but you do know you can place a different DVD drive and an Xbox as long as you know the DVD key of the old one you can get yourself a x360 pro V2 and then program your old key onto the new one. But the way you did it is cheaper
@@CyberCPU cuz I had a Jasper drive that had a light on drive in it but I end up getting a BenQ in there and as long as I flash the key that goes with the console it's all good
@@ArtMiles11 I remember there was a reason I didn't go that route but can't remember what it was. To be honest with you I don't think that Xbox has been fired up since I did the video. In fact if you look at the top shelf of my current set you will see that Xbox sitting up there collecting dust. 🤣😂
@@CyberCPU that means is you got to do a video of you RGH3 it get it modded it's very cool you got a falcon on your hand That's the motherboard. If you're interested I'll send you a good guide online on how to do it
Thanks for the idea, however, I had the same open tray problem and all I did was open and close the tray several time until the console was again able to read the disc. Problem solved haven't had a problem with it since.
The only other thing it could be is the IO board and if that's the case the Xbox is junk. You can't replace the IO board because it's tied to the motherboard. It's part of the Xbox copy protection. You might be able to pull the hash off the old drive and add it to another one but that's fairly advanced and doesn't work on all drives. If that's the case I would suggest just replacing the Xbox. 360s are getting pretty cheap. I believe the slims are less likely to get the red ring problem.
while watching the video. mine started working again. all i did was open/ close the tray a few times. I am not saying this is ya'll issues. but i thought i'd say so people can also try

Very nice my man!! Ordered the laser useing your link took me about 20 mins to replace it . Thank you very much. Pat Ponder Gainesville Ga.
Figured everything out, ordered the part, followed your video to the "T" and voila!!! Everything works now! Thanks for your video!!

Me too, did yours still work afterwards?

The solder ball is used to protect the device from static discharge while in shipping. If you don't remove it the laser won't work.
This worked great. I brought my 2009 XBOX360 back to life! Thanks!!q
As embarrassing as my original videos are I'm glad they're still helping people. 😉

Worked great. I followed right along with no issues. Games now boot instantly, like new!
@@pocket83squared I just repaired mine yesterday Replaced the laser and belt on it and it works fine again.
awesome video, is this process all the same for the BenQ drive laser replacement?
Thank you! I was able to use an laser out of an old 360 I have and that laser works great.
Watch the video in 2024, great tutorial and successful repair thank you 👍
Thank you for the video. I have a newbie question, how do you know the exact laser to get in order to replace the old one? Thanks again
You need to buy the lazer for your specific drive. Search for the drives model number and you should find the part number for the specific lazer.
@@CyberCPU thank you for the quick reply
Super helpful! My 360 rides again! Liked and subscribed.
Glad it helped. My 360 is collecting dust. I don't even believe it's hooked up at the moment.

I cannot get the gray disc tray to slide out any advice?

That's true. But I believe it needs to be the same model DVD drive and Microsoft used like three different drives in the 360.
